Chapter 339 Proposal

Ethan paused, "Mom's awake?"

On the phone, Caleb's voice was full of joy, "Yeah, the doctor said your mom is doing great. She's already eating porridge and veggies. She doesn't know I'm calling you. Can you come see her now?"

"Grandpa, we're on our way." Ethan turned the car around and headed straight for the hospital.

At the Hospital

When they got to Doris's bedside, Ethan suddenly stopped, looking all kinds of conflicted. Ashley squeezed his hand and said, "Honey, don't be nervous. Mom wants to see you too."

Ever since finding out Doris was his mom, Ethan had visited her a few times while she was in a coma. Each time, he felt a heavy guilt.

Now that Doris was finally awake, Ethan was a mix of excited and nervous.

Ashley's words gave him strength. He took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

"I'll get it." Autumn opened the door and saw Ethan and Ashley. "You're here, come in."

Even though Doris had just woken up, Caleb had already filled her in on everything. She knew Ethan was the child she thought had died.

The moment Ethan walked in, Doris's eyes locked onto him. It was like some long-lost connection sparked to life.

They just stared at each other, not saying a word.

Caleb and Autumn exchanged looks. Ashley gently nudged Ethan towards Doris and said sweetly, "Mom, Ethan was so happy to hear you woke up. He was really worried and rushed over. We came so fast we forgot to bring a gift."

Ethan and Doris snapped out of their trance and looked away.

Doris said, "Ashley, don't be so formal. I'm just glad you came."

She looked at Ethan with anticipation.

Ethan felt a bit embarrassed. He cleared his throat, "Mom, you've been through so much."

From Caleb, Ethan knew Doris had suffered a lot.

Doris suddenly burst into tears and grabbed Ethan's hand, her voice full of pain, "Ethan, you're the one who suffered. Ivy was horrible. She hurt me, but she also abused you. How are your injuries? Any lasting effects?"

Her tone was full of concern and love.

Ethan had spent his childhood without a mother's love. Now, with Doris's genuine care, his heart felt warm, but thinking about his past, he also felt a deep bitterness.

"Mom, that's all in the past. I'm fine now, no lasting effects." Ethan held Doris's hand, and they looked deeply at each other.

He continued, "You've just woken up. Don't talk too much. Rest and focus on getting better."

With Ethan's help, Doris lay back down.

Doris wiped her tears, "Okay, I'll listen to you."

Ethan said, "Mom, while you were in a coma, Dad came to see you every day."

Doris's eyes flickered.

She looked down, her eyes darting, like she wanted to say something but hesitated. Gathering her courage, she stammered, "Ethan, there's something I need to tell you. By my side..."

Before she could finish, James burst into the room, excitedly saying, "Doris, it's amazing you're awake. I knew you'd be okay. Doris, I've waited for you for thirty years. This time, I won't miss the chance. Let's get married!"

James grabbed her hand. Doris struggled but couldn't break free, her face turning red.

"Doris, if it weren't for Ivy, we would've been together long ago. Once we're married, our family will be complete!" With that, James pulled out a wedding ring and knelt on one knee, "Doris, please marry me!"

Doris's eyes widened in shock.

Ethan was surprised too. His usually clueless dad had finally figured it out.

But why did Doris seem reluctant?

She didn't take the ring, and the atmosphere got awkward. Suddenly, she clutched her head, "My head hurts."

Ethan stepped forward, "Mom, what's wrong?"

"My head hurts, and I'm feeling dizzy," Doris said.

Ethan said with concern, "Then you should lie down and rest."

"Okay."

Doris lay down, a hint of discomfort on her face. Ashley noticed and thought Doris might not want to marry James.

But hadn't Doris loved James for years? Why wouldn't she want to marry him?

Ashley said, "Dad, Mom just woke up and isn't fully recovered. Maybe you can propose formally when she's better. Let her rest for now, okay?"

Ashley felt uneasy, sensing that Doris didn't want to marry James.
