Chapter 349 If There's a Misunderstanding, Explain It with Words
When Ashley got back to the Yates mansion, she ran into Michael and Katherine coming downstairs. They were taken aback by her red, puffy eyes and tear-streaked face, feeling a wave of sadness for her.
"Ashley, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" Michael asked, clearly worried.
Ashley hadn't expected to bump into them right away. She quickly wiped her tears and said, "Michael, Katherine, I'm not feeling well. I need to rest."
"Ashley, at least have some breakfast before you go lie down," Katherine suggested softly.
Trying to pull herself together, Ashley shook her head. "I'm not hungry."
Michael and Katherine exchanged concerned looks. "What's going on with Ashley?"
Just then, Ethan burst in, looking frantic as he scanned the room. "Grandpa, grandma, have you seen Ashley?"
"She just went upstairs to rest. She wouldn't even eat breakfast. What's happening?" Michael asked.
Without another word, Ethan dashed up the stairs, leaving Michael and Katherine to share a worried glance. "Did that jerk Ethan upset Ashley?" Katherine wondered.
Michael suggested, "Let's go check on her and see if we can help."
In front of the master bedroom door, Ethan was banging on it, pleading desperately, "Honey, open the door. Let me explain. It's not what you think!"
For the first time, Ethan felt a sense of desperation, realizing how serious the situation was.
He tried the lock but found Ashley had locked the door from the inside.
"Honey, please open the door!" he pleaded again.
Ethan paced anxiously outside the door. Inside, Ashley had been crying for a while. Hearing Ethan's voice, she started to calm down. She choked up and said, "Ethan, what else is there to explain? I saw you and Annie with my own eyes. If I hadn't stepped in, would you have gone all the way?"
"Ethan, I didn't expect you to be so vulgar!" Ashley's voice trembled with hurt and disbelief.
Separated by the wall, both were stubborn, and the tension was thick in the air.
Frustrated by Ava's actions and now misunderstood by Ashley, Ethan's patience wore thin. "Ashley!" he growled.
"Think about it calmly. Annie is George's girlfriend. How could I possibly do anything inappropriate with George's future wife?"
The more Ethan thought about it, the angrier he got. "What you saw was just a misunderstanding because of the angle. Nothing happened between Annie and me! If you don't believe me, you can take me to the hospital for a check-up!"
Suddenly, the door swung open.
Ashley, her eyes red and teary, stood before him, evoking a sense of pity. Seeing her like this, Ethan's anger vanished, replaced by heartache and guilt.
In a cold tone, Ashley asked, "So you're saying I saw it wrong?"
"That's right," Ethan affirmed. "Annie has been pestering me. I got angry and grabbed her neck to warn her. It's not what you think!"
"Honey, you're always the smart one. Are you really gonna fall for Annie's trap?"
Ethan, with confidence, replied, "I don't know why Annie did this, but my people have already detained her. The truth will come out soon!"
Ashley was shocked. "You locked Annie up?"
"Yes," Ethan confirmed. "Honey, you have to believe me. You're the only one in my heart. Once I get to the bottom of this, I'll explain everything!"
Ashley asked, "If this morning was a misunderstanding, then nothing happened between you and Annie last night either?"
Ethan didn't hesitate. "Absolutely not!"
Ashley looked deeply into Ethan's eyes.
Ethan's face was sincere, and his eyes didn't waver, showing he wasn't lying. Ashley started to doubt herself. Had she really misunderstood?
Ashley was torn, wondering whether to trust her eyes or Ethan.
Katherine, her voice filled with anger, cut in, "Ethan, how could you cheat on Ashley with another woman? You're such a jerk!"
Michael, brandishing a cane, lashed out at Ethan. "You scoundrel! No wonder you didn't come home last night. How could you do such a despicable thing? How could you betray Ashley?"
Each hit landed on Ethan, causing him to grunt in pain, but he stood his ground. He firmly stated, "I swear I did not!"
One of Michael's strikes seemed to hit Ethan's bone, making his face turn pale and sweat bead on his forehead, but he gritted his teeth and stayed silent.
Ashley, heartbroken, tried to stop Michael's cane.
Michael's voice was filled with anger as he exclaimed, "You're still arguing! Who gave you the guts to stay out all night after getting married? You deserve a beating!"
With each word, Michael swung the cane violently. Ashley instinctively rushed over to hug Ethan. "Michael, stop..."
"Honey!" Ethan exclaimed, hugging Ashley and spinning around.
In the midst of this, Michael's cane hit the back of Ethan's head.
Ethan grunted in pain.
His face turned even worse.
Ashley, heartbroken, asked, "Honey, are you alright?"
Ashley instinctively touched the back of Ethan's head. There was no blood, but a sizable bump had formed.
Ethan's vision blurred slightly. He shook his head and looked at Michael. "Grandpa, you can hit me, but don't accidentally hurt Ashley!"
Michael couldn't bear to hurt Ashley. He was just angry and wanted to teach Ethan a lesson. Little did he anticipate Ashley's sudden intervention, which Ethan managed to shield her from. Fortunately, Ethan blocked it. Otherwise, the baby in Ashley's belly could have been in danger.
Michael, fear-stricken, dropped the cane. "Ashley, I'm sorry. Are you okay?"
Ashley reassured him, "I'm fine."
"Honey, I'm sorry. I was impulsive and not calm. I trust that you would never betray our marriage."
