Chapter 328 The Relationship is Established
Ethan was feeling pretty low when he found out Ashley couldn't have kids. He'd already come to terms with the idea of never being a dad.
But then, out of nowhere, the news about the kids hit him like a ton of bricks—in a good way.
Watching the doctor do an ultrasound on Ashley, Ethan nervously asked, "Doc, how's she doing?"
The doctor smiled, "The babies are doing great. Just be extra careful during the first three months. Don't do anything that could put them at risk!"
Ethan, looking a bit sheepish, nodded, "Got it."
Ashley blushed, avoiding the doctor's gaze. After a bunch of tests, Ethan held Ashley's hand as they walked out. He looked at her with eyes full of stars and a goofy grin on his face.
Ashley teased him, "Why are you grinning like that, honey?"
Ethan squeezed her hand, "I thought I'd never be a dad. This is such an amazing surprise! Just thinking about it makes me so happy I can't stop smiling."
Ashley felt just as lucky and happy. She kissed him and said, "Congrats on becoming a dad, honey."
Ethan kissed her back, "Congrats on becoming a mom, honey."
Ethan checked his watch, "It's dinner time. Let's head home."
Ashley nodded, but as they reached the hospital entrance, she suddenly stopped, "Wait."
"What's up?" Ethan asked.
"Nora's test results should be ready by now. Since we're here, let's grab the report." Mentioning Nora made Ashley serious. The idea that Nora might be Ethan's kid was like a thorn in her heart.
Ethan chuckled and led Ashley outside, "Honey, you wait in the car. Standing here will wear you out."
His gentle and thoughtful nature eased Ashley's discomfort. She chuckled softly, "Okay."
Ethan opened the car door and watched Ashley get in before heading back to the hospital.
He went to the lab to pick up the report. When he saw the results, his eyes narrowed, a sharp look in them.
The report read: [Ethan, Nora, Paternity Confirmed!]
Seeing this, Ethan angrily confronted the doctor, "Doc, is there a mistake in this report?"
The doctor replied, "We don't make mistakes. The results are accurate!"
Ethan's face turned pale, veins bulging on his forehead, and his fierce gaze made the doctor shiver.
Ethan growled, "No way, you must've messed up!"
He couldn't wrap his head around it.
Ethan was convinced Nora wasn't his kid!
But people trust medical results, not gut feelings.
If Ashley found out, Ethan could already see how crushed she'd be. And with her finally being pregnant, if she got upset and something happened to the babies...
Ethan's heart pounded. He was terrified of breaking Ashley's heart and even more scared of something happening to the babies.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Ashley.
His hand shook as he picked up. He swallowed hard and answered, "Hello."
Ashley asked, "Honey, did you get the report?"
Ethan's voice caught. After a moment, he slowly said, "The doctor said it'll be ready in a day or two."
Guilt washed over him.
It was the first time Ethan had lied.
As soon as he said it, he regretted it. He felt awful, pulling at his face in frustration. Lying to his wife made him feel terrible.
Ashley didn't suspect a thing and said, "Then why haven't you come out yet? I'm starving. Let's go home."
Ethan blushed with shame, "Okay, I'm coming out now."
He stuffed the report into his briefcase. He needed to figure this out, fast.
A moment later, Ethan got into the car. Ashley was still basking in the joy of being pregnant and didn't notice his uneasy expression.
Ashley asked, "Honey, what should we have for dinner tonight?"
Ethan's eyes flickered, "Anything's fine."
Ashley looked at him, surprised. Ethan forced a laugh, held her hand, and said warmly, "I can eat anything, but you're different. I'll get a nutritionist to plan your meals."
Ashley nodded, "Okay."
She couldn't help but feel Ethan seemed a bit distracted.
The car started and headed towards the Yates Mansion, while Lucas, deep in thought, watched them leave from a corner.
Prison
Lucas said, "Ivy, I tampered with their test results to make it look like the paternity is confirmed. Ethan already knows. Weirdly, I saw him being super attentive to Ashley at the hospital today. Looked like they even went to the obstetrics and gynecology department!"
Ivy's eyes widened, "Could Ashley be pregnant? Dad, we need to speed things up. Tomorrow, I want everyone to know about Ethan's illegitimate child!"
