Chapter 10 Repay Him
"Ah, comfortable, so much more comfortable!" Todd seemed to have regained some spirit, his eyes twinkling with a bit more light.
This sudden change stunned everyone, especially Mr. Diaz, who was dumbfounded.
"This... Dad! Are you well?!" Michael's excitement was palpable.
Todd nodded and said, "Yes, I feel much better now, no more pain, haha."
"Really? That's great, that's great!" Michael replied, relieved.
Everyone was very excited, especially the wealthy lady who was in tears of joy.
As for the young man who was still holding James, he was dumbfounded, standing there in a daze.
"Elbert! What are you doing? Release Dr. Smith now!" Michael immediately reprimanded Elbert, and demanded, "Apologize to Dr. Smith."
Elbert trembled and quickly let go of James and said, "I'm sorry. I was too impulsive. Please forgive me, Dr. Smith."
James had been living a miserable life for the past five years, enduring disdain and contempt, but now he felt a bit triumphant.
"It's okay," James replied as he waved his hand with a gentle smile, earning the goodwill of the people.
As for Mr. Diaz, he dared not speak anymore. He hid behind the crowd, his face embarrassed, muttering, "This is impossible. I just did a full-body check on Todd yesterday. There was no foreign object in his body at all. Could it be true that he was cursed?"
"Look, the things that were spit out by Todd were really worms! It's so disgusting, and they're still moving!" someone exclaimed.
Upon hearing this, everyone looked down and saw a pile of black worms wriggling on the ground, a sight that was quite disturbing. The temperature around them dropped significantly.
"How terrifying! So these worms tormented Dad for so long, I'll crush you!" Elbert couldn't contain his anger and moved forward to stomp on the worms.
James hurriedly stopped him. He yelled, "Don't!"
"Dr. Smith, what are you doing?" Elbert asked in confusion.
"These are resilient venomous creatures. If you touch them, they will attach to you. They must be incinerated with intense fire to be eradicated," James said solemnly.
Elbert immediately shuddered and took two steps back, creating distance with a lingering fear.
James cured Todd, and everyone was grateful to him, especially Michael, who was almost kneeling to him.
Even Mr. Diaz, who had confronted him earlier, came over to apologize and requested to take some of the worms back for analysis. James advised against it, stating that these worms were difficult to deal with.
Mr. Diaz confidently claimed that nothing would happen, as he had a specialized laboratory and would keep the worms in a secure container that couldn't affect him.
Seeing his persistence, James didn't bother saying anything more.
Todd was healed, in better spirits than before, and after eating some porridge, he could already get out of bed and walk around.
Seeing the Brown family rejoicing, James didn't want to disturb them and instead walked to the side, waiting for Michael to come over.
Just then, his phone suddenly rang, and when he picked it up, it was Jennifer calling.
James greeted, "Hello, Jennifer..."
Before he could finish, Jennifer's pleasant voice came through the phone, "James, where have you been? It's late, and you're not home yet."
James's heart skipped a beat, feeling a warm surge. Was Jennifer concerned about him? This was the first time Jennifer had urged him to come home since they had gotten married.
"I'm in the RV Villa District," answered James.
However, Jennifer disdainfully said, "James, can you stop boasting? Where is the RV Villa District? It's a villa area only the wealthy can afford. Can you get in? Are you picking up trash there?"
Her words angered James, so he rebutted, "Jennifer, I really am in the RV Villa District, at Michael Brown's house, the richest man in our Lindwood City."
Jennifer mocked, "Haha, at Michael Brown's house? You're really something! You're so incredible. Why aren't you in the sky yet!"
Jennifer's words dripped with disdain; she thought James was just blowing his own trumpet.
Blood rushing to his head, James retorted, "If you don't believe me, I'll put Michael Brown on the phone!"
"Forget it." Jennifer impatiently said, "Stop boasting. Hurry home quickly!"
With that, Jennifer hung up the phone.
James was almost infuriated by Jennifer and wanted to call back, have Michael Brown call her, and tell her he was really at Michael Brown's house!
But seeing the Brown family happily chatting, he reconsidered. Jennifer sounded urgent, and there might be something going on at home.
James didn't dare delay and approached Virgil on the side, and informed him, "I have an urgent matter at home, and I need to go back. Sir, could you please inform Mr. Brown of this for me?"
"Do you need someone to drive you back?" Virgil nodded and asked.
"No, I'll go back on my own," James rejected the offer.
"Alright," Virgil said.
After James left, Virgil suddenly remembered something. "Wait, he cured Todd, and we haven't properly thanked him yet!" he exclaimed.
He immediately chased after James, but there was no sign of him. When he returned, Michael came over and asked, "Virgil, where's James?"
Regretfully, Virgil said, "Dr. Smith has already left."
"What?! He's gone already?" Michael was shocked, and said, "Why did he leave? We haven't properly thanked him yet!"
"It's my fault. I was confused and didn't have time to keep Dr. Smith here. Please punish me, Young Master!" Virgil said, kneeling and slapping himself.
"What's going on?" Todd asked, who had been observing, and walked over.
Virgil regretfully said, "Master, Dr. Smith has left. It's all my fault for not keeping Dr. Smith here in time. Please punish me, Master!"
Todd immediately frowned, displeased, "What? Dr. Smith has left? How could you be so confused? He is my great benefactor. If it weren't for him treating me in time, I would have died! You are usually so skilled. How could you make such a big mistake!"
Upon hearing this, Virgil felt even more guilty and continued to slap himself.
Elbert urged, "Bro, you're the one who brought him here, so give Dr. Smith a call and get him back! He saved Dad's life, and we gotta show him some gratitude!"
The rest of The Brown Family chimed in, insisting that Michael should make the call.
However, Michael could only offer a rueful smile and say, "I'd call if I could, but the thing is, I don't have his number."
"Foolish!" Todd immediately scolded, unable to contain his anger, "Michael, how could you handle things like this? Dr. Smith came to treat me. I could overlook your mockery earlier, but now that he has cured me, you didn't even acquire Dr. Smith's number.
"Do you all not intend to repay him? To put it bluntly, you are all ungrateful! I have taught you how to be grateful and repay kindness.
"I command you, no matter what, you must find Dr. Smith and bring him back. I want to repay Dr. Smith personally! What are you all waiting for? Go quickly!"
Todd's authority within the family was immense. When he got angry, everyone trembled. Even Michael didn't dare disobey, just nodding in agreement.
James had no idea that his sudden departure had caused such a stir in the Brown Family. Now, he was taking a taxi back home.
It was over six miles back to the Johnson Family from here, and the taxi fare would cost quite a bit. Despite the Johnson Family being wealthy, he, as the son-in-law, was truly broke.
His total assets amounted to only a few thousand dollars, and now, spending dozens of dollars felt like it was cutting his flesh.
"Sigh, if only I had Michael transfer that eight million to me earlier. Now, by leaving abruptly, the Brown Family probably thinks I'm not giving them face, and that eight million is probably going down the drain," James said to himself as he sighed repeatedly.
