Chapter 209 James, I won't let you get away with this!
"Are you a doctor too?" James almost asked but quickly dismissed the thought.
'She doesn't know a thing about medicine, definitely not a doctor,' he mused.
Seeing his confusion, Harmony smirked. "I'm one of the investors for this East-West medical exchange conference."
"Impressive," James gave her a thumbs up, though it wasn't clear what impressed him. Harmony, used to his quirks, rolled her eyes and kept driving.
After a while, she remembered something. "James, are you representing traditional medicine in the competition this time?"
"Competition?" James was puzzled.
"Yeah, competition," Harmony said, her expression turning serious. "Didn't you figure out the specifics of this exchange conference?"
She hit a nerve. Although James agreed to attend at Dr. Wheeler's request, he only understood the conference's nature, not the specific process.
"Is it complicated?" he asked curiously.
"It's not about complexity," Harmony explained, her voice taking on a concerned tone. "The problem is that traditional medicine is significantly weaker this year, while Western medicine is coming on strong. They have renowned domestic professors and foreign experts attending. The influence is huge. In contrast, traditional medicine has been declining for years, with only a few veterans like Edwin holding on. They can't compare."
It seemed the decline of traditional medicine was widely acknowledged. Even outsiders like Harmony knew about it.
James nodded, agreeing with her. "That's the situation."
"It's easy to say but hard to do," Harmony sighed. "Very few people are learning traditional medicine now." She widened her eyes in surprise, but before she could elaborate, a car suddenly changed lanes in front of them. At their current speed, a collision was imminent.
"Focus on driving; a car just changed lanes ahead!" James warned urgently.
Harmony reacted instantly, slamming on the brakes and narrowly avoiding a rear-end collision.
"Can you focus on driving and not get distracted?" James said, exasperated. "I want to live a few more years."
Harmony, slightly shaken, took a deep breath. Once she was driving steadily again, she glared at him. "It's all your fault for talking to me and distracting me."
James sighed internally, feeling a pang of regret.
'Why did I agree to travel with Harmony? It was asking for trouble!' he thought.
Seeing his silence, Harmony softened her tone. "Are you mad?"
"No," James responded flatly.
Harmony bit her lip. "I'm sorry. I was saying it casually; I didn't really blame you."
Her apology caught him off guard. He wasn't truly mad; he was trying to maintain distance. "It's fine; I'm not mad." He reassured her.
"I don't believe you." Harmony pouted playfully.
James was speechless. "Really," he insisted.
"I still don't believe you. Unless you apologize to me."
He stared at her, bewildered.
'What kind of request is that?' he thought.
Seeing his confusion, Harmony burst out laughing. "Just kidding."
As the atmosphere lightened, Harmony continued, her expression turning serious again. "I've heard that traditional medicine is in a tough spot this time."
James smiled faintly. "We'll see."
Harmony felt a surge of frustration.
'This guy is infuriatingly nonchalant. It's like talking to a wall,' she thought.
Unbeknownst to them, their seemingly harmless trip had ignited a firestorm of jealousy and rage back in Lindwood City.
In a luxurious villa, the sound of shattering glass pierced the air, followed by a furious roar. Jared, in a fit of jealous rage, had just smashed a vase against the wall, terrifying the woman cowering on his bed.
He had been in the pleasure of sex when a message from his subordinate popped up on his phone. The message contained a photo of James getting into Harmony's Ferrari. The angle from which the photo was taken made it seem like they were kissing.
The sight sent him into a blind rage. His arousal vanished, replaced by a burning desire for revenge.
"Harmony, you bitch! You really became lovers with James!!"
"James, you took my money, and now you dare to touch my woman. I won't let you off!!!"
He gripped his phone so tightly his knuckles turned white, resisting the urge to crush it. He jumped out of bed, ignoring the sobbing woman, and frantically dialed his subordinate.
"What exactly is going on? Did they go to a hotel?" His voice was ice-cold, laced with murderous intent.
"Not sure yet," the man on the other end stammered. "After James got into Harmony's car, they left. We tried to follow, but she was driving too fast."
Jared gritted his teeth, his eyes burning with hatred. Ever since the banquet, he had been harboring a burning resentment towards James. He had tried to drown his anger in a string of meaningless flings, but it only intensified his rage.
He had become a laughingstock, mocked for his pathetic display at the banquet and now for being outmaneuvered by James again. The fact that Asher had explicitly warned him against retaliating, citing James' connections to Joe and Michael, only fueled his frustration.
But now, seeing that photo, his carefully constructed control shattered. He couldn't endure it any longer.
Taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes, composing himself. When he opened them again, they were bloodshot, but his demeanor was eerily calm, his voice cold and menacing.
"Use all means necessary to find out where they went. I want an answer in ten minutes, or don't bother coming back."
He hung up and turned to the terrified woman on the bed. "What did you see or hear just now?"
The woman, understanding the implied threat, shook her head frantically. "I didn't see or hear anything."
Jared nodded curtly, then grabbed her hair, forcing her to perform oral sex. But to his horror, his genitalia didn't respond. His body, consumed by rage, refused to cooperate.
"Useless!" he roared, slapping her in frustration.
The woman sobbed, desperately trying to please him, but his genitals remained unresponsive.
Enraged and humiliated, he kicked her away, his voice thick with fury.
"James, I won't let you off!!!"
