Chapter 156: The Medicinal Ingredient

"Mr. Wheeler is truly noble and virtuous; I am deeply impressed!" Alan sincerely praised him. As a distributor, he had interacted with countless doctors, but Edwin's nobility was unparalleled.
Edwin smiled slightly. "Let's first take a look at your daughter's condition."
"Alright!" Alan sat by the bed and gently said to his daughter, Luna Jordan, "Luna, don't be afraid. This man is a miracle doctor; he can cure your illness, and you won't be afraid of the sun anymore."
Luna looked very timid, and it took her a while to muster the courage to peek out and say, "Daddy, I don't want to undergo treatment anymore. Every time you say it can be cured, but it never works."
Alan's heart ached. He stroked his daughter's head and gently said, "Don't worry; this time, it will definitely work. This man is a miracle doctor."
"No way!" Luna shook her head, timid yet resistant. "Daddy, you're lying. You always say that!"
Alan's expression stiffened. He tried hard to comfort Luna but to no avail. Finally, it was Luna's mother who came out and persuaded Luna to accept the treatment.
"Mommy, will it really not hurt?" Luna tightly grasped her mother's hand, her expression full of fear.
Edwin said, "Luna, you don't need to worry. It won't hurt."
"Doctor, is that true?" Luna looked at Edwin with innocent eyes, still somewhat doubtful, clearly scarred by past experiences.
Edwin smiled. "Of course it's true. You'll be fine after taking a nap."
Luna was finally convinced and relaxed.
Edwin then proceeded to examine her condition. Alan and his wife stood by nervously. After Edwin finished, Alan hurriedly asked, "Mr. Wheeler, how is it?"
Edwin paused for a few seconds, not answering immediately. Instead, he gave Alan a look and walked out of the room.
When Alan saw Edwin's serious expression, he felt a sudden pang in his heart and became even more anxious. He signaled his wife to comfort their daughter and followed Edwin out of the room, asking, "Mr. Wheeler, is it very serious?"
"Your daughter's pulse is weak and erratic, and her bodily functions are gradually deteriorating. Did you, by any chance, follow other doctors' advice to have her exercise to boost her immune system?" Edwin asked solemnly.
"Yes, yes, we did," Alan replied nervously. "Isn't exercise good for her?"
Edwin sighed. "Mr. Jordan, you shouldn't have followed that advice. In your daughter's condition, exercise only worsens her illness. The more she exercises, the more her bodily functions deteriorate."
Alan's face turned pale upon hearing this. "Mr. Wheeler, what should we do? You must save my daughter!"
"I can't guarantee a cure, but we can try our best," Edwin said. "If we had a top-grade Reishi mushroom, it might help. But such a thing is extremely rare these days."
Alan immediately said, "Top-grade Reishi mushroom! Yes, yes! How could I forget such an important thing? Mr. Wheeler, please wait a moment. I just bought a top-grade Reishi mushroom yesterday. I'll go get it for you."
Edwin was stunned and wondered if Alan had really acquired a top-grade Reishi mushroom.
Soon, when he saw Alan holding a shiny and black Reishi mushroom, his eyes widened in amazement. He hurriedly stepped forward. "This, this truly is the one I need..."
Seeing the shock on Edwin's face, Alan felt quite proud and said, "This is the top-grade Reishi mushroom I bought yesterday. It was just harvested and is at least five hundred years old."
Edwin carefully examined the top-grade Reishi mushroom and exclaimed in admiration, "Beautiful, truly beautiful! I never thought there would still be a five-hundred-year-old top-grade Reishi mushroom in the world. It's a miracle!"
"Mr. Wheeler, you mentioned before that a top-grade Reishi mushroom could cure my daughter's illness. Is that true?"
It was evident that Alan was only concerned about his daughter. He and his wife had their daughter in their thirties, and they cherished her dearly.
Derrick, standing nearby, was equally astonished. He hadn't expected Alan to actually find a top-grade Reishi mushroom, especially one that had grown for five hundred years.
Edwin finally smiled and said, "With this top-grade Reishi mushroom as the medicinal ingredient, the problem should be manageable."
Alan was overjoyed. "That's wonderful! I am glad to hear that."
Next, Edwin instructed Derrick to cut a small piece from the top-grade Reishi mushroom, grind it into powder, and mix it with over a dozen other herbs to make a decoction. They simmered the concoction for nine hours, reducing a large pot of medicinal soup to a small bowl. "Mr. Jordan, just have your daughter drink this bowl of medicine and continue this treatment for half a month, combined with my acupuncture, and she should recover."
When Alan looked at the dark and murky medicine, he suddenly remembered James's warning from the previous day, cautioning him that the top-grade Reishi mushroom might not cure his daughter.
He instinctively wanted to ask Edwin about it. But after considering it for a while, he thought he was overthinking it; he didn't believe James.
So, he said nothing.
Luna drank the medicine, and her complexion became rosier. Her spirits lifted significantly, and she no longer looked as frail as she had initially.
Edwin personally administered a few acupuncture needles to Luna to help her better absorb the medicine. The entire process took an hour, and given Edwin's age, he was visibly fatigued.
He took the towel Derrick handed him, wiped his sweat, and smiled. "From now on, Derrick will come to administer the acupuncture. If all goes well, she should be fine in half a month."
Alan couldn't contain his joy. He stood up and gave Edwin a deep bow, sincerely thanking him. "Thank you, Mr. Wheeler!"
Edwin waved his hand and said, "This is what we doctors are supposed to do, Mr. Jordan. No need for such formalities."
After Edwin and Derrick left, Alan looked at his sleeping daughter. He finally let out a long sigh of relief. The tension that had gripped him for so long finally eased, and he smiled brightly. It seemed that there was indeed a way to save her daughter; the top-grade Reishi mushroom could truly cure her strange illness. He was glad he hadn't listened to James; otherwise, he would have offended Edwin.
After a day's rest, Luna's complexion improved even more, and she no longer looked so frail. The whole family was elated, feeling that Luna was finally on the path to recovery.
The next day, Derrick came alone to administer the acupuncture. Through intense training, his acupuncture skills had improved significantly. Although he couldn't compare with Edwin, he was better than most doctors in the field.
After Luna drank the medicine, Derrick began the acupuncture.
He was ten minutes faster than Edwin. After finishing, he stood up and smiled. "Luna's condition is much better today than it was yesterday. If we keep this up, she'll be healthy in no time."
Alan remarked, "HC Medical Center is truly impressive. Other doctors were completely helpless with my daughter's illness."
Derrick smiled slightly, his expression proud. "Of course. The reputation of HC Medical Center wasn't built overnight; it's been built by countless successful treatments. Mr. Jordan, I heard you once spread the word that whoever could cure Luna would get three years of supplies at a cost price. Is that true?"
Alan gave Derrick a meaningful look, thinking that Derrick was a sly guy.
However, he didn't deny it. To him, as long as his daughter could be cured, everything else was a minor issue.
Just as he was about to nod, a sudden scream came from Luna's room.
