Chapter 313 It Was Our Johnson Family That Failed Him
He had this killer plan, but how the heck was James gonna go for it?
James shot it down, no mercy. Dorian wanted to keep begging, but one nasty look from James had him shaking in his boots. He stared at James, all bitter and pissed, totally losing that cocky attitude he had before.
After grabbing a bite at Leopold's place, James wasn't stuffed, but he was cool with it. Didn't hang around too long; munched on some fruit, shot the breeze with Leopold for a bit, then bounced.
Dorian, though, still wouldn't quit. He was dead set on being James's sidekick. But one more glare from James, and Dorian was back to being a scaredy-cat.
Now he was kicking himself. If he'd known James was such a badass, he wouldn't have dared to act all high and mighty. Now, he blew his shot at making it big.
The trip was totally worth it. Even if nothing else panned out, finding a lead from Kieran was a jackpot.
Thinking about all the crap he'd been through lately, James felt his blood boiling. 'Just wait, the engagement party, huh? I'll give you a show you won't forget,' he thought.
Meanwhile, Edwin was chilling in a courtyard, sipping tea and chatting with a couple of buddies when a bunch of folks barged in.
"Dr. Wheeler, hey! There you are. We've been hunting you down forever." The voice was a woman's, sweet but totally wiped out and desperate.
Edwin looked up, stunned. "Jennifer, is that you?"
Yep, standing there, looking like she hadn't slept in a week, was Jennifer.
Next to her was another stunner, her bestie, Harmony.
Behind them, four of Harmony's bodyguards, making sure nothing went sideways.
Jennifer rushed up to Edwin, skipping the small talk, and blurted out, "Dr. Wheeler, we need to find James. Where'd he go? We've been searching for days and got zilch."
Harmony chimed in, "Yeah, Dr. Wheeler, spill it. We're losing our minds here!"
Edwin's jaw dropped as he looked at Jennifer and Harmony. He was speechless, not 'cause they were gorgeous, but 'cause they looked wrecked!
Especially Jennifer, she was a shadow of her former self, with huge bags under her eyes, looking like she was about to keel over, not just tired but like she was running on fumes!
Even standing right in front of Edwin, with no breeze in the room, he felt like she could just blow away.
Jennifer was seriously weak.
Harmony was a bit better off but still looked rough, having dropped a lot of weight. As a doc, Edwin could tell right away they were running on empty, totally sleep-deprived and emotionally drained, drowning in grief.
"Dr. Johnson, Ms. Brown, when's the last time you guys slept? How'd you get so run-down in just a few days?" Edwin couldn't help but ask.
Jennifer was freaking out. She shook her head and said, "Dr. Wheeler, cut the chit-chat. Just tell me where James went. I need to find him, like, now!"
She stared at Edwin, eyes full of desperation.
Edwin's lips twitched as he remembered what James had told him before taking off. He shook his head with a bitter smile and said, "Dr. Johnson, you're barking up the wrong tree. I have no clue where James went."
But Jennifer wasn't buying it. She bit her lip and said, "Dr. Wheeler, don't BS me. James already spilled the beans to you. I know it."
Edwin felt a pang of guilt and sighed, "Dr. Johnson, it's not that I'm holding out on you. I really don't know where he went."
Harmony jumped in, "Dr. Wheeler, we talked to the hospital staff. You handled James's discharge. How can you not know where he went? Whatever James told you, it's a mix-up. We need to find him! And with his injuries, if he doesn't get proper care, who knows what could happen?"
"Dr. Wheeler, there's a huge misunderstanding between James and me. It's not what he thinks. Please, just tell me where he is. I'll even get on my knees if I have to." Jennifer said, starting to kneel, which freaked Edwin out.
He quickly grabbed her. "Jennifer, no! Get up!"
Luckily, Edwin caught her in time, or she would've been on the floor.
Unable to kneel, Jennifer gave up and started crying. "Dr. Wheeler, James means everything to me. Please, tell me where he is."
Edwin sighed and said, "Jennifer, it's not that I don't want to help, but after James left the hospital, he just had a meal with me and then took off without saying where he was headed."
Seeing Edwin wasn't lying, Jennifer felt crushed. She started to sway, looking like she was about to collapse.
"Didn't he leave any contact info?" Jennifer asked, clinging to hope. "I tried his old number, but it's always off."
Edwin shook his head regretfully and said, "James probably figured you'd come looking for me. He didn't leave any contact info, just told me to wait for his call."
Hearing this, a flicker of hope sparked in Jennifer's eyes. She pleaded, "Dr. Wheeler, if James calls you again, please let me know right away, okay?"
"Okay." Edwin nodded earnestly.
After a moment, Edwin couldn't help but ask, "Jennifer, what kind of misunderstanding happened between you and James? When he left the hospital, he looked more broken than I've ever seen. I've known him for a while, and he's the best guy I've ever met. Missing out on him is a huge loss."
Hearing this, Jennifer lowered her head, tears streaming down her face. She bit her lip hard, her expression a mess of emotions. After a long silence, she finally said, "It was our Johnson family that let him down."
