Chapter 340 The Person I Care About Is You

"James, I'm really sorry. Don't be mad at me, okay?" Emberlyn whined, giving his arm a little shake.

James just sat there, stone-faced and silent, acting like he didn't hear a word she said.

Actually, James wasn't that ticked off. He just knew if he let Emberlyn keep this up, it was gonna be a mess. Plus, she wasn't a kid anymore. She was at that age where she should be thinking about settling down. If she kept fixating on him, it was only gonna hurt her. From day one, he'd always seen her as a little sister, nothing more.

"James, I swear I won't do it again. Please, don't be mad at me, okay?" Emberlyn kept pleading.

James kept ignoring her, and she started to freak out. She wasn't scared of him yelling or anything but his ignorance against her.

Finally, James decided to cut her some slack. If he kept this up, she might actually start bawling.

"Do you even know what you did wrong?" James asked.

"Yeah, I know I messed up!" Emberlyn replied.

"What exactly?" James pressed.

Emberlyn responded innocently, "I shouldn't have kissed you."

James's eyes went wide as he felt the urge to snap at her.

Emberlyn quickly backtracked, "Just kidding, I shouldn't have kissed you, anywhere."

"Good that you know!" James huffed. He wanted to give her a piece of his mind, but seeing her relax and smile, he couldn't keep it up. He poked her forehead, feeling kinda helpless.

Seeing James wasn't mad anymore, Emberlyn wrapped her arms around his right one again, but kept a bit of distance this time.

James knew how clingy she could get. Once she latched on, it was hard to shake her off. He wasn't in the mood to deal with it right now, so he let her be.

The last divination had really taken it out of him. He was exhausted. The mental strain had been so intense, he'd even coughed up blood. His head was still spinning. He stopped talking and closed his eyes, trying to recover.

Emberlyn held onto him quietly, not wanting to disturb him. Just being close to James made her feel content.

Even with his face all scarred up, Emberlyn still thought he was super handsome. In fact, he seemed even more mature and charming now.

If she could've had her way, she would've made a move on him ages ago. Getting with James was her biggest dream.

The car was crawling along. The driver, under Emberlyn's orders, was taking it slow so James could rest.

About half an hour later, Emberlyn's phone rang, waking James up.

She pulled out her phone, frowned, and hung up, looking annoyed.

"Who was that?" James asked, feeling a bit better after his nap.

"Who else? That idiot Walter. He's so annoying, calling me every day. I've told him a million times I don't like him, but he just won't quit. It's so irritating," Emberlyn grumbled.

James thought back to his last chat with Walter and said, "I think he just cares about you. That's why he keeps calling."

"What good is it if he cares about me? I don't care about him," Emberlyn shot back, then softened her tone, clinging to James's arm with a smile. "The person I care about is you."

"Here we go again. Shut up. I'm your brother," James said, exasperated.

"We're not related by blood," Emberlyn replied, totally unfazed.

James knew this conversation was going nowhere, so he switched gears. "So, who is this Walter guy that you can't shake him off?"

"He's from the Jenkins family in Starlight State with no special skills but terrible temper, and a vulgar personality. I can't stand him," Emberlyn said, clearly disgusted.

James shrugged. "If you hate him so much, just tell your parents. You're an adult; they can't force you."

"I've told them, but it's useless," Emberlyn said, sounding defeated. "Our families are tight. He has asked my Dad for permission to marry me more than once. Let's drop it. It's annoying. Anyway, I will never marry him. If I get married, it will be to someone I love," she declared firmly.

She batted her eyes at James, who immediately closed his eyes, pretending not to notice.

Soon, Emberlyn's phone rang again. It was Walter. She hung up and blocked his number.

But half a minute later, the phone rang again from another number. Walter was persistent.

"This isn't gonna solve anything. You should just make things clear," James said.

Emberlyn knew he was right. She answered the phone and before Walter could speak, she snapped, "Walter, are you crazy? Why do you keep calling me? It's so annoying."

The car was quiet, and James could clearly hear Walter's voice. "Emberlyn, I heard you're in Lindwood City, too? That's great, I'm also in Lindwood City. How about we have dinner together? I know a restaurant here with an amazing chef," Walter said, unfazed by her outburst.

"Sorry, I've already had dinner. You can eat by yourself. And don't call me again. I don't like you now, never!" Emberlyn shouted.

"Emberlyn, don't be so absolute. I'm an excellent man. If you agree to go on a date with me, I guarantee you'll fall in love with me," Walter said.

James couldn't help but laugh. This Walter guy was too full of himself. His laugh was loud enough for Walter to hear, who instantly got mad. "Emberlyn, why is there a man's voice? Who are you with right now?"

Emberlyn's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Yeah, I'm with my boyfriend. You hear him."

James rolled his eyes. Emberlyn's provocation was so typical.

But it worked. Walter immediately started shouting, "Who dares to steal my woman? I'll destroy him! Emberlyn, give him the phone. I want to see how tough he is."
