Chapter 471 I'll Avenge You
James thought Jeffery was about to turn around and extended his arms, ready for an embrace. However, he performed an action that left James astonished. Instead of turning around, he shook his head and muttered to himself, "Another hallucination, another hallucination."
Then Jeffery continued limping forward.
With this, James felt a sharp pain in his heart!
Jeffery's words indicated that Jeffery had heard him call out before.
Could it be that something significant happened to Jeffery in the five years he was gone?
James took a deep breath, quickened his pace, and caught up to him, firmly grabbing his hand while raising his voice, "Jeffery, it's me."
Then, Jeffery was stunned. He turned around mechanically, saw James, and his body began to tremble violently. His expression went from blank to astonished, then to disbelief, and finally to excitement and joy.
Soon, his eyes were filled with tears.
James finally got a clear look at him but found him nearly unrecognizable.
Five years ago, Jeffery was a charming young man. If James was flamboyant and domineering, then Jeffery was handsome and romantic.
But now, where was Jeffery's former handsomeness? Now, his face was covered in stubble, with his messy hair, evidently unwashed for days. His complexion is sallow, devoid of the former cleanliness, especially his demeanor—dejected, despondent, and down-and-out.
What happened?
If James hadn't grown up with Jeffery since childhood, he would hardly believe that the man before him, appearing to be in his forties or fifties, was once the handsome youth he remembered.
Moreover, Jeffery's left leg, at the knee, was unnaturally bent, clearly having been beaten by something heavy, causing a fracture and a limp.
Besides that, James noticed from Jeffery's complexion that he was riddled with illnesses, extremely weak, and already had tuberculosis at such a young age.
Someone must have deliberately abused Jeffery to make him like this. And now, Jeffery's life was no different from that of an ordinary laborer.
Why did this happen, and who did it?
In that moment, a blazing fury ignited within James, whose heart had been serene for so long. The flames filled his chest, and even his breath exuded an intense heat.
"James, is it really you? Have you really come back?" Jeffery stared intently at James, even though James was right in front of him, he still couldn't believe it, thinking it was unreal.
James felt another sharp pain in his heart. He smiled and said, "Yes, I'm back."
James took a step forward and hugged Jeffery.
From Jeffery, he smelled a foul odor; Jeffery hadn't bathed in days, and his skin was rough, clearly from being exposed to the elements and enduring much hardship.
After being hugged, Jeffery felt a familiar sensation and couldn't hold back anymore. He tightly hugged James and started crying loudly.
Just like a child, he wailed in James's arms.
Suddenly, many eyes on the street were drawn to them.
Soon, Erin came over. She was a bit surprised to see this scene but didn't disturb James.
Jeffery cried for a minute. He looked intently at James, his voice still trembling, "James, when did you come back?"
James said, "I just got back not long ago."
James didn't immediately ask Jeffery how he ended up so down-and-out but instead put his arm around Jeffery's shoulder and said with a smile, "Come on, let's go have a drink."
Jeffery knew James was deliberately trying not to embarrass him, and his eyes showed gratitude as he nodded lightly.
James's return was overwhelming for Jeffery. Even now, his mind was still in a daze.
Afterward, James bid farewell to his mother Erin and went to dine with Jeffery.
Fortunately, the Serenity Haven Hotel was nearby, and he took Jeffery inside.
In recent days, nearly all the staff at Serenity Haven Hotel had been replaced, with Wylie's people being entirely swapped out. The new manager, who was one of Saxon's associates, was taken aback upon seeing James walk in with Jeffery in his arms. "James, good day to you!" The manager exclaimed.
He greeted James respectfully, feeling nervous, unsure if this high-and-mighty James was here for an inspection.
James waved his hand and said, "Get me a private room for dinner."
"My pleasure, James!" The manager nodded vigorously and quickly arranged the most luxurious and high-end private room for James.
Once the manager was certain that James was merely there to dine and not to conduct an inspection, he breathed a sigh of relief.f.
"Jeffery, this hotel is mine. Order whatever you want, don't be shy," James said with a smile.
Jeffery's mind cleared a bit, but he still felt awkward and humble, laughing dryly, "James, you go ahead and order."
"Alright." James didn't force Jeffery and directly ordered a few dishes Jeffery used to love.
James personally poured Jeffery a glass of wine and said with a smile, "Come on, Jeffery, let's toast."
"Okay!" Jeffery nodded, clinked glasses with James, and drank it all in one gulp, then started coughing.
These past few years have been exceedingly harsh on him. Not only has he been left with a limp, but his body has also accumulated numerous ailments. His lungs, in particular, are in deplorable condition, causing severe coughing fits each night. Lately, he has even begun to cough up blood. When he saw the doctor last month, he was told that his health is in a critical state, and that drinking alcohol could pose a grave risk to his life.
However, now that James had returned, Jeffery was determined to drink with him, even if it means risking his life.
The waitstaff served the dishes quicklyas nearly ten dishes were brought out, all of Jeffery's favorites.
Gazing at the array of exquisite dishes, Jeffery's eyes welled up once more. Not because it had been so long since he had a decent meal, but because, after all these years, James still remembered his favorite dishes.
James waved his hand, signaling the waitstaff to leave. He smiled and said, "What are you waiting for? Enjoy it."
Then, James started eating as Jeffery was influenced and began to eat as well.
Finally, after drinking, James asked, "Jeffery, who did this to you? Tell me, and I'll get revenge for you."
He said this very calmly, as if he were asking what dish Jeffery wanted to order.
But Jeffery could feel the anger and murderous intent in James's tone.
Jeffery lowered his head and didn't answer. After a while, he somewhat evasively asked, "James, where have you been these past five years?"
