Chapter 407 Jennifer's Unusual Worldview

James felt his whole body tense up in an instant. Harmony was being way too bold, flirting with him right in front of Jennifer.

'What is she thinking?' James wondered. He held his breath, glaring at Harmony. Quickly, he moved his feet away, not giving her a chance to pull any tricks.

Harmony had stretched her leg so far that when James pulled back, she almost lost her balance. She was lucky she was leaning against the table; otherwise, she would've fallen. Even so, her sudden jolt caught Jennifer's attention.

"Harmony, are you okay?" Jennifer asked.

"I'm fine, thanks," Harmony replied quickly, feeling embarrassed. She shot James an annoyed look, blaming him for almost making her fall.

Just then, the waiter started serving the dishes, and Jennifer didn't get suspicious. She began eating and said, "The food here is pretty good. James, Harmony, you should try it too."

"Okay," James said, sitting up straight and nodding before starting to eat.

He spread his legs wide on purpose, making sure Harmony had no chance to flirt with him again.

Luckily, Jennifer didn't notice anything, or things could've gotten messy.

Halfway through the meal, Jennifer went to the restroom, leaving James and Harmony alone, making things awkward.

James kept his head down, avoiding eye contact with Harmony, just eating and waiting for Jennifer to come back.

But Harmony wasn't letting it go. She said, "Why did you pull your leg back so suddenly? You almost made me fall."

James paused for a moment, ignoring her, and kept eating with his head down.

Harmony sighed, her tone filled with disappointment and sarcasm, "Do you think I'm shameless? Being friends with Jennifer while trying to seduce you?"

James was stunned and looked up, seeing Harmony's disappointed and self-mocking face. He felt a bit of pity and, after thinking for a moment, said, "We won't have a future together."

"I know, but can't you let me dream a little?" Harmony stared at James, her tone carrying a hint of unwillingness.

James fell silent. Then he said helplessly, "Why do you have to do this? In the end, you'll be the one who gets hurt."

"It's my choice," Harmony said with a smile, but it was a smile that made one's heart ache.

James wanted to say something but couldn't bring himself to. He felt more sympathy for Harmony's misguided love.

As James remained silent, Harmony sighed deeply and said with immense sadness, "Okay, I get it. From now on, I'll keep my distance from you and won't disturb your life with Jennifer."

Harmony's voice trembled as if she was about to cry, making James look up and meet her sorrowful eyes.

James wanted to comfort Harmony but didn't know what to say.

Right then, Harmony, who had been all sad and mopey, suddenly burst into laughter. "Do you really think I'd let you off that easy?"

James was caught off guard. Harmony's sudden switch-up left him confused. What was she playing at?

Gone was the sadness on Harmony's face, replaced by a mischievous, sly grin. "Look at you, you goof. It's hilarious," she chuckled.

She then stood up, leaned in close to James, and with a confident smirk, said, "James, you can't shake me off. I'll make you fall for me."

James felt totally helpless.

With that, her smile grew even brighter, full of confidence. Then she left the table and headed to the restroom.

James sat there, stunned. Harmony was becoming more unpredictable by the minute. The real puzzle was Jennifer's attitude, which he just couldn't figure out.

James didn't enjoy the meal at all. Luckily, after dinner, Harmony didn't stick around and went home.

Jennifer, holding James's arm, walked back slowly. The streetlights stretched their shadows long and far.

As they were about to get home, James couldn't help but ask, "Jennifer, aren't you mad that Harmony hugged me today?" He really wanted to know what was on Jennifer's mind.

Jennifer said, "Why should I be mad?"

James was speechless for a moment. He couldn't tell if Jennifer was serious or just messing with him.

"I mean, she's a woman, hugging me like that. Doesn't it bother you at all?" James thought he was being clear, but Jennifer still seemed oblivious, almost unrealistically so.

"It's fine. Harmony was really sad when you were missing," Jennifer replied.

James frowned, feeling the need to be even clearer.

But just as he was about to speak, Jennifer said, "I know what you're getting at."

"Then why are you acting like this?" James paused.

Jennifer sighed and said, "Harmony's actually really pitiful. I get how painful it is. We have a good relationship. She helped me a lot before, so now I'm helping her. There's nothing wrong with that."

James was shocked. He could hardly believe these words were coming from Jennifer. Even if they had a good relationship, so what? Besides, could she really help in this way?

"Jennifer, have you been watching too many TV dramas? Even if you're friends, you can't do this." James tried to be as gentle as possible.

Jennifer looked at James and asked, "Do you really dislike Harmony?"

"It's not about whether I like her or not. It's that this whole thing is just wrong," James said, rubbing his head, feeling a headache coming on.

Jennifer said, "No, I think it's fine. Alright, let's drop it. It's going to rain soon. Hurry up." She held James's arm and walked faster, clearly avoiding the topic.

James felt helpless and had to give up. However, he didn't notice that when Jennifer looked away, her eyes flashed with complex emotions.

Clearly, what she was thinking was not as simple as she appeared.
