Chapter 112: Wrong, Wrong

All at once, everyone in the conference room turned their eyes to Eugene. Dominic said excitedly, "Dr. Baker, you have a solution? Please, tell us."
Eugene relished the attention, especially in front of Jennifer. It made him feel a bit proud. Back at Southern Medical University, Jennifer had never paid him any attention. He secretly vowed to cure Brandon's strange illness this time, to impress Jennifer and win her heart.
He remained calm and composed, waiting a moment before speaking. "Mr. Edwards' illness, I encountered it before during my training in Simbara. It's actually a variant of ALS. The cause is similar to ALS, where nerve cells are damaged, leading to progressive muscle atrophy, weakness, and eventually respiratory failure."
Jennifer interjected. "As far as I know, the clinical manifestations of ALS are muscle atrophy and loss of mobility. It doesn't cause necrotic tissue that looks like tree bark on the body, does it?"
Eugene looked at Jennifer and smiled. "That's why I said it's a variant of ALS, not ALS itself. Of course, Dr. Johnson, your wide knowledge is commendable."
Jennifer immediately frowned, feeling displeased. Eugene was too arrogant, and as a subordinate, he was disrespectful to her.
Seeing Jennifer's expression, Eugene realized that she was not his subordinate but his superior. He became flustered. "Dr. Johnson, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it that way."
"Enough," Jennifer interrupted him coldly. "You don't need to apologize to me. Just report your treatment plan."
Eugene regretted his words. He chastised himself in his mind, 'Why did I speak so carelessly and upset Jennifer?'
He could only pin his hopes on curing the illness. As long as he cured Brandon's strange disease, he believed Jennifer would still develop a good impression of him.
So, he put away his pride and began to report seriously. "Actually, as early as the last century, this strange disease appeared in Simbara, and no specific cause could be found. It wasn't until three years ago that biologists in Simbara discovered the cause. This strange disease is similar to ALS in that it involves nerve cell damage. However, unlike ALS, this strange disease also affects the skin tissue."
Pausing for a moment, he continued, "And the strange thing about this disease is that the onset period and severity vary from person to person. Some people can live fifty years without any symptoms, while others can die within a few months."
Eugene rattled off a bunch of technical terms about the disease, his words filled with arrogance and pride.
His attitude made many in the room uncomfortable, but considering his capabilities, they had to tolerate it. After all, he was indeed skilled.
Dominic, growing impatient, said, "Dr. Baker, just tell us if there's a treatment plan."
Eugene replied, "There is a treatment plan, but it's very complex and extremely expensive. The necessary medications are not available domestically."
"Cost is not an issue." At this moment, a voice came from the corner of the conference room. Everyone looked over to see a middle-aged man standing up, saying, "As long as you can cure my father-in-law, I, Herman Watson, owe you a favor."
The middle-aged man, who looked to be in his early forties, had an unremarkable appearance but a commanding manner. His presence immediately shook the room.
Moreover, his aura clearly indicated that he was a person of high status and power.
Hearing the middle-aged man's words, Eugene became instantly excited. He had heard of the Watson family from Emerald Isle City, a powerful family. If he could earn Herman's gratitude, he would receive a lot of money. And then Jennifer would be his.
Many of the department heads present were extremely envious upon hearing this, secretly lamenting their own lack of ability.
Dominic was also very excited. He tried to contain himself and said to Eugene, "Dr. Baker, did you hear that? You must not let me down."
Eugene straightened his back and replied firmly, "Yes. I will do my utmost to cure Mr. Edwards, no matter at what cost."
In this meeting, Eugene became the star, overshadowing all the other department heads.
After the meeting, Eugene once again invited Jennifer to dinner, but she refused without hesitation. Eugene watched Jennifer's departing figure, unable to hide his longing for her.
After work, Jennifer left her office and saw James squatting in the hallway. She walked over in her high heels and asked, "Why are you staying here?"
James stood up. "I just got here. I saw you were busy in your office, so I didn't go in."
Seeing James' bright smile, Jennifer felt a sudden warmth in her heart. She said, "Next time, you can come straight into my office. You don't need to wait outside."
James was taken aback, then nodded. "Okay."
"By the way, did you come up with a treatment plan for that strange illness you mentioned a while ago?" James suddenly remembered and asked curiously.
Jennifer replied, "We did come up with one. Strictly speaking, it wasn't a discussion. Dr. Baker proposed the plan himself. He encountered this strange illness in Simbara."
James was somewhat surprised. Besides him, there was someone else in the country who could treat this illness? It piqued his curiosity.
"Really? What's his treatment plan?" James asked curiously.
Jennifer rolled her eyes at him and said, "It's not a normal case. Since you don’t have much experience, you may not understand."
James laughed and said, "I'm just curious. Besides, I do know a little bit."
Jennifer thought about it and realized that James had indeed cured the little boy's skin condition, even though she believed it was just a lucky coincidence on James' part.
Feeling the pressure from Brandon's strange illness, she decided to tell James after some contemplation.
She recounted Eugene's explanation of the disease and the treatment plan from the meeting. The more James listened, the deeper his frown became. Shaking his head, he said, "That was a completely wrong way."
Jennifer was taken aback. "What's wrong?"
James said, "The cause isn't nerve cell damage at all. It's an issue with the immune system, which led to an infection with a rare bacterium, causing changes in the blood and resulting in these symptoms."
As James finished speaking, Eugene, who had been eavesdropping from the corner, couldn't hold back any longer. He stepped out with a dark expression and shouted, "You are talking nonsense."
He shouted so loudly that he attracted the attention of everyone around, including Dominic and Herman.
"What's going on?" Dominic and Herman walked over, frowning.
"Nothing much, just that this gentleman here said Mr. Edwards' illness isn't due to nerve cell damage but an issue with the immune system. I found it amusing." Eugene quickly repeated James' words. Dominic and several department heads also laughed upon hearing this, looking at James as if he were a fool.
Indeed, to them, James was being utterly ridiculous.
Jennifer also turned her head away, feeling exasperated. James never failed to make her worry, always putting her in awkward situations at the most times.
Herman frowned and asked curiously, "This doctor looks unfamiliar. Is he also from Lindwood City Hospital?"
