Chapter 172 Mockery from Relatives
Many people laughed out loud when they heard Jennifer's words. The fact that Kayla and Leonard had syphilis had long been spread throughout the family, becoming a joke. Now, Jennifer brought it up in public, amusing many.
Tony was furious, his anger making him shake, unable to come up with a retort. Pointing at Jennifer, he could only manage to shout, "Jennifer, how dare you! Is this how your parents taught you to speak to your elders?"
This comment included Dennis and Kaitlyn in the insult, causing their faces to darken. Kaitlyn couldn't hold back any longer and stood up to scold, "Tony! You were the one who mocked Jennifer first, and now you are accusing her? Besides, did Jennifer say anything wrong? She can indeed cure Kayla and Leonard's syphilis. Jennifer kindly offered to help, and not only did you not appreciate it, but you also scolded her. Is this how an elder should behave?"
Kaitlyn's outburst surprised many. In everyone's impression, Kaitlyn was a gentle, traditional woman, and it was the first time she had responded in such a manner.
Tony felt even more embarrassed and uncomfortable after being reprimanded.
"Enough!"
An elderly man stepped forward with a stern face and scolded. "Arguing in public, what kind of behavior is this?"
It was Marvin. His appearance silenced everyone.
"Dad."
"Dad."
"Grandpa."
Kaitlyn's family greeted him respectfully, though reluctantly. Marvin had always been biased and had never cared for Kaitlyn's family over the years.
Marvin nodded slightly, his demeanor haughty, and walked over with his cane, looking around the clinic. He then said to Jennifer, "Not bad. Your parents supported you through school for so long, and you finally have some ability and opened a clinic."
Marvin's words sounded like praise, but his tone lacked any genuine appreciation, filled instead with arrogance.
Jennifer felt uncomfortable but maintained a polite facade, nodding and thanking him, "Thank you, Grandpa."
Marvin continued, "However, running a clinic is not like running a convenience store. It requires real skills. You're still young. Can you handle it? Young people should be down-to-earth and take one step at a time. Don't always think about reaching the top in one go."
Marvin's criticism, delivered in front of everyone, felt like a public scolding, showing no respect for Jennifer or consideration for Dennis and Kaitlyn’s feelings.
Jennifer bit her lip. If it weren't for the special occasion, she would have retorted!
Marvin had always been biased and unkind to her, but to say such things on her opening day was truly despicable.
Tony stood by, gloating, unable to hide the smile on his face.
Jennifer kept a straight face, acting like she hadn't heard, and focused on getting things ready for the opening. But Marvin spoke up again, "And apologize to your uncle too. As a younger person, you should never talk back to your elders, got it?"
Hearing this, Jennifer's expression changed again. She looked up at Marvin, full of defiance. Marvin scolded again. "What, are you unwilling to apologize?"
"Why should I apologize to him? He was the one who started it." Jennifer retorted defiantly.
Marvin scolded, "Because he is your uncle! Who taught you to behave like this? Now you don't even listen to your grandfather! Do you think opening a clinic makes you successful? Do you really think learning some basics makes you a miracle doctor?"
The atmosphere grew increasingly awkward, with many relatives watching coldly. Some of the family's idle and losers felt secretly pleased to see Jennifer being scolded.
Jennifer's eyes reddened. Marvin's words were not just disrespectful; they were humiliating!
She couldn't understand why other people's grandfathers were kind and loving, while hers was so harsh.
She was a strong woman, with a better psychological resilience than most, but at this moment, she felt the urge to cry, tears welling up in her eyes.
Seeing the situation worsen, Kaitlyn quickly stepped in to smooth things over, apologizing to Tony on Jennifer's behalf, and the matter was temporarily resolved.
However, this only made Tony more arrogant. He vented his accumulated frustrations on Jennifer, wandering around and then mockingly saying, "It's your opening day, yet besides us relatives, there's not a single guest. Jennifer, where are your colleagues and friends?"
Other relatives noticed this and chimed in "Yeah, it's the first time I've seen an opening without anyone coming to congratulate."
Dennis and Kaitlyn felt embarrassed. Kaitlyn whispered to Dennis. "Dennis, didn't you notify your friends early on? Why haven't they shown up?"
"Well, I don't know either. Maybe they haven't arrived yet," Dennis replied, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. He turned to Jennifer and asked, "Jennifer, where are your colleagues and friends? Why haven't they come?"
Jennifer shook her head. "I didn't invite them."
"What? Why didn't you invite your friends to congratulate you? " Dennis said, his face filled with reproach.
Tony and a few relatives walked over and mocked her. "What, you didn't invite any friends to come and congratulate you? Or did you invite them, and they didn't show up? You must have no friends. A clinic opening with no one to congratulate. What a joke."
"Exactly. If no one comes to support, I can call some people to fill the place."
"Hiring actors to fill the place for an opening? That's a new one."
They all laughed mercilessly.
At this moment, a clear voice rang out. It was James, who stepped forward and said with a smile, "No need to worry, everyone. I have already invited Mr. Evans and Mr. Sanders. They should be arriving soon."
James had been silent, almost invisible, and given the impression he had left on the relatives over the years, no one took him seriously. Now, hearing his words, they were all stunned.
A relatively wealthy relative laughed and asked, "Did you just say, Mr. Evans and Mr. Sanders? You don't mean Joe Evans and Arnold Sanders, do you?"
Other relatives joined in the mockery.
