Chapter 333 Is This Miracle Doctor James
"Edwin, let me raise a glass to you," Derek Jenkins said, lifting his drink and grinning at Edwin. "I've heard about you for ages. You're like a legend in the medical world, a real stand-up guy. I've been wanting to have a drink with you forever, but I've been swamped."
Edwin, feeling all kinds of flattered, quickly grabbed his glass, stood up, and clinked it with Derek's, making sure his glass was lower. "Mr. Jenkins, I'm just a regular doc. How could I deserve you coming to find me? If anyone should be chasing a drink, it ought to be me."
Derek chuckled, "Edwin, cut that out. In the medical world, you're the man, a miracle worker who's saved countless lives and given hope to so many. Compared to you, I'm nothing. Honestly, I'm more like a hitman, with blood on my hands. Maybe this illness is karma catching up with me."
His words hit deep, his face full of emotion, moving everyone around. Edwin quickly responded, "Mr. Jenkins, don't say that! The blood on your hands is from your enemies. You're never an executioner. If it weren't for folks like you fighting out there, we wouldn't have the peace we enjoy in Dreamonia today! In my eyes, Mr. Jenkins, your contributions are way bigger than anyone else's!"
As soon as he finished, Joe and the others jumped in in a flurry of praising Derek.
Derek listened, smiling but shaking his head, "Let's drop this. It's all in the past. Come on, Edwin, another toast."
Just then, Walter, sitting nearby, grabbed Derek's hand and said, "Grandpa, the doc said no drinking!"
"I've been off the booze for almost half a month, and I don't feel any better. A bit alcohol won't hurt. Plus, the best doc in all of Serenity Province is right here. What's a little drink gonna do?" Derek laughed and pushed Walter's hand away.
Hearing this, Edwin got serious. "Mr. Jenkins, for your health, it's better to stay away from alcohol. Maybe just a sip. More than that wouldn't be a smart move. And speaking of which, I'm not the best doc in Serenity Province; there's someone else who holds that title."
Derek looked surprised and asked, "There's a doc in Serenity Province better than you? Who's this miracle doctor?"
Edwin laughed, "He's the most talented doc I've ever met, and I worship him."
The other doctors nodded in agreement. They'd all seen James's skills and were totally convinced of his genius.
Seeing their reactions, Derek asked curiously, "What's this miracle doctor's name?"
Right then, Joe, sitting nearby, had a lightbulb moment and asked, "Edwin, you talking about James?"
"Yep," Edwin nodded with a grin. He swelled with pride thinking about how James totally owned that medical exchange conference. Having a rockstar like him in the medical field was a win for all.
Nevertheless, it was unfortunate for a man as awesome as James had to go through such a nightmare, getting his face burned beyond recognition.
Walter, who had just told Derek not to drink, chimed in, "If this doc is so amazing, why not have him treat my grandpa?"
Edwin sighed, "Not too long ago, he got caught in a fire. He saved seven kids trapped in the flames but got hurt himself."
Edwin quickly recapped James's heroic act of saving the kids from the fire and sighed again.
Derek, hearing this, felt a mix of regret and mad respect for James. As a veteran, he had a soft spot for those who made sacrifices for others!
But Walter, still not satisfied, said, "He made it out of the fire, right? If he's alive, he can treat my grandpa."
Edwin's face changed instantly. He wanted to snap but remembered Walter's status. He couldn't afford to piss him off. He swallowed his anger and said coldly, "Walter, I don't think so."
Derek immediately shot Walter a glare and scolded, "Walter, how can you talk like that! Dr. Smith is a hero who saved lives and deserves our respect. Apologize now!"
Walter, hearing Derek's words, didn't dare to defy him so he grudgingly apologized.
Edwin felt uneasy with Walter's attitude. The more young folks he met, the more he appreciated James and felt sorry for his situation. Such a good guy like James ended up in such a mess, while others who hadn't done much were living it up.
But, Walter was Derek's grandson and had a high status. Edwin, being over eighty, knew better than to offend someone like that. He hid his displeasure and took a sip of the wine Walter offered with a smile.
After that, they kept chatting about different stuff. After a few drinks, Joe got down to business and said to Edwin and the other docs, "Edwin, the reason we got you here is to treat Mr. Jenkins's illness."
Edwin and the others weren't surprised as they knew this. They nodded and said, "As long as it's within our power, we'll do our best to cure Mr. Jenkins."
The other docs also showed their commitment with solemn faces.
Then, Edwin sat next to Derek to start the treatment.
The big private room went quiet, and everyone watched Edwin closely, feeling the tension.
But as time went on, Edwin's face got more and more serious. Finally, he looked up, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Mr. Jenkins, your condition is worse than I thought!"
