Chapter 24 I Admit Defeat in the Bet
"Sure," James agreed and nodded.
The middle-aged man took out a magnifying glass and carefully examined the jadeite for two minutes.
He then nodded, admiring, "Indeed, it is top-grade jadeite. It's rare to find such quality of jade in a place like this."
James smiled faintly without saying a word.
"Young man, I really like this top-grade jadeite. Name your price, and I'll buy it from you," the middle-aged man stated as he looked at James with a friendly attitude.
All eyes were on James.
"Sorry, I have no intention of selling this jade," James answered.
"Oh?" The middle-aged man curiously raised an eyebrow, took out a check from his pocket, swiftly wrote a string of numbers, and said directly, "Six million dollars, I'll buy this top-grade jadeite from you."
Silence.
The scene suddenly quieted down.
'Six million!' someone exclaimed in their thought.
'My goodness, that's enough to buy a villa in the most bustling area of the city!' another thought to themselves.
Everyone was dumbfounded. It was no longer just jealousy; there was a strong urge to snatch the top-grade jade from James.
Somebody questioned in disbelief, "Is he crazy? This top-grade jade is worth at most five million. Why would someone pay six million for it?"
Someone enviously remarked, "He's struck it rich! It's truly a fortune. He bought it for two thousand, and now this!"
Another regretted, "If he's a piece of trash, then what are we?"
Dennis's eyes widened, his body trembling with excitement. He boasted, shamelessly, "Haha, see that? This is my good son-in-law. I knew he wasn't a waste. Six million, six million..."
People sneered at him. they thought, 'How shameless of you! You were the one who insulted him the most earlier, and now you have the nerve to say these things.'
"How about it? Your top-grade jade is worth at most five million, and I'm offering you six million," the middle-aged man offered as he waved the check, his tone full of temptation.
James remained expressionless. Everyone thought he had been scared silly, but then he spoke, revealing a smile. "Still not selling," he said confidently.
Someone gasped, "What?!"
Another remarked, bewildered, "Is this guy crazy? Not selling even for six million?"
One said, enviously, "Showing off, he's definitely showing off!"
Jennifer also kicked him, exasperatedly saying, "James, what are you doing? Not selling even for six million? Are you out of your mind?"
The middle-aged man wasn't angry. He glanced discreetly at a window on the opposite loft and curiously asked James, "Young man, why won't you sell to me? Is my offer not high enough?"
James smiled, and explained, "It's not about the price. This jade has a special meaning to me. I want to give it to someone."
Then, James turned to face Jennifer. He stated, "Darling, our fifth wedding anniversary is coming up in a few days. This top-grade jade is a gift for you. I hope you like it."
Jennifer's mind exploded at that moment, utterly shocked. Her body felt weak, her heart racing to the extreme, and her face visibly flushed.
She hadn't expected James to pull this move. Faced with the temptation of six million, James stood firm and gave it to her directly.
At that moment, her feelings towards James suddenly became complicated.
"I..." Jennifer was at a loss for words. In the end, Kaitlyn nudged her, and she managed to accept the gift.
The middle-aged man hesitated for a moment, then applauded. He praised, "Truly devoted in love. Miss, this gentleman truly loves you deeply. You are so fortunate."
Hearing this, Jennifer glanced at James, feeling even more conflicted.
Finally, the middle-aged man handed James a business card and told him to call anytime if he ever decided to sell.
Because of this incident, Dennis's attitude towards James improved significantly. He no longer called him a useless piece of trash and even started to persuade Jennifer not to treat James so badly.
During dinner, the elderly couple kept urging them to have a child this year, making James and Jennifer both feel awkward.
Finally, at bedtime, James and Jennifer returned to their room and closed the door, and the atmosphere became somewhat ambiguous.
Jennifer pretended to look stern, but upon closer inspection, her unease was evident.
James had a bit to drink with Dennis that night, feeling a bit heated. He took a step forward, closing the distance, and said, "Darling, I extracted top-grade jade today..."
Jennifer understood James's implication. Her heart raced, and she pretended to be stern, saying, "So what?"
"It seems you promised me that if I could extract top-grade jadeite, you would agree to all my requests," James reminded her teasingly as he took another step forward, making Jennifer even more nervous.
"Did I? I don't remember!" Jennifer feigned ignorance.
James didn't back down. He continued, "Mom and Dad said we should have a grandchild for them to hold."
Upon hearing this, Jennifer became even more nervous; her body inexplicably softened a lot. Clenching her teeth, she was very confused. Was she really going to give her body to him?
"So?" Jennifer said while she forced a cold smile.
James boldly took two steps forward, pressing Jennifer against the wall. "Darling, are you trying to back out?" he teased.
"Who's backing out? Let me go, you stink," Jennifer said as she pushed James, but she couldn't muster much strength. The masculine scent emanating from James made her legs weak.
James released her, shaking his head and saying, "Never mind. It's pointless. Let's go to sleep."
Jennifer was provoked by his expression as she said, "Stop right there!"
James turned back to look at her.
"You just want to do it with me, right? Fine, I'll give in! I, Jennifer, admit defeat in the bet!" Jennifer took a deep breath and then began to undress herself voluntarily.
Soon, her outer clothing was removed, revealing her perfect figure.
James was stunned. Seeing Jennifer about to remove her pants, he chuckled wryly. He said, "You've misunderstood. That's not what I meant."
Jennifer scoffed at his words, "Oh, come on, stop pretending. You just want to sleep with me, and you're still pretending. It's disgusting."
As she continued to undress, James reached out to stop her hands, helplessly saying, "Where are you going with this? When did I say we should do this? My request was simply to see you smile at me. We've been married for so long, and you've never smiled at me."
Jennifer was stunned, and asked, "What did you say?"
James smiled, gazing earnestly at her. "Your smile must be beautiful. I just want to see you smile," he emphasized.
Seeing Jennifer still unmoved, James felt a bit dejected and said, "Since you're not willing, let's forget it."
Thinking of something, James turned back, smiling with a hint of bitterness, and stared at her.
He said, "You don't need to worry. I won't force you to do anything until you truly love me."
With that, he casually made a bed on the floor and lay down. In truth, there was one more thing he didn't say, that perhaps they were not meant to be together as a couple, and this marriage was coming to an end.
