Chapter 143: Dazzling

Barbara didn't believe James had the financial capability to purchase that necklace; she thought he hadn't seen such precious jewelry before and just wanted to take a look.
James, however, seemed oblivious to Barbara's mockery. He smiled and said, "That's exactly what I mean. I just want Jennifer to have the best."
Loren, standing nearby, couldn't help but laugh. "Mr. Smith, do you even know the price of this necklace? Do you think you can buy it for a few thousand dollars?"
His tone was full of undisguised sarcasm, and his expression was full of contempt, thinking James was just trying to show off.
Many people around also laughed, thinking James was overestimating himself. They couldn't believe he dared to pretend to be super rich.
Several salespeople were also laughing at him, snickering.
But James remained unmoved. He seemed completely unaware of the ridicule directed at him and nodded, saying, "I know. Didn't the salesperson just say it costs one million? Well, it's not that expensive."
Jennifer couldn't take it anymore. She pinched James and whispered, "James, what are you doing?"
She was increasingly regretting bringing James to dinner. He always seemed to embarrass her at the most unexpected moments. Over the past five years, James had done countless such things, and Jennifer was getting scared now.
Meanwhile, hearing James's words, the crowd laughed even harder. Barbara said, "Mr. Smith, do you really think you can come up with one million?"
"Where did this guy come from? This is too funny."
"Yeah, it's been a long time since I've seen someone this ridiculous. A one million diamond necklace? He'll never afford it in his lifetime."
"If I married a man like that, I'd definitely get a divorce."
"That's true, he seems to be a loser!"
Everyone started mocking James.
Faced with these taunts, James remained unfazed. He genuinely intended to buy Jennifer a necklace because he noticed the look of amazement and affection in her eyes when they walked in.
Moreover, they had been married for so long, and he had never given Jennifer any jewelry. Now that he had the chance, it was time to give her something special.
But Jennifer couldn't stand the humiliation. She had basic dignity and couldn't endure being mocked by so many people while remaining as stoic as James.
The way Barbara looked at her made her extremely uneasy, as if she was sitting on thorns, and her face was flushed with a hot sensation.
"James, if you keep this up, I'm going to get really mad!" She glared at James, her teeth clenched.
James gave her a gentle smile, looking deeply into her eyes, and said, "Jennifer, Barbara is right. We've been married for so long, and I haven't given you any gifts. That's my fault. This time, I want to give you a unique gift."
Jennifer was stunned. She had never seen James so serious and affectionate. She couldn't help but nod.
Immediately, she regretted it.
'What am I thinking? How could I have believed James?' she thought.
Despite James's calm demeanor, she knew he had no money, so she couldn't believe that James would buy her jewelry.
"Mrs. Alexander, don't you really like this necklace? Why haven't you bought it yet?" James said with a smile.
Barbara's expression changed slightly, and she deliberately put on a disdainful look, saying haughtily, "After taking another look, I found this necklace too ordinary to match my elegant aura."
However, her eyes couldn't help but drift back to the diamond necklace.
"Oh, really? I thought Mr. Schneider was reluctant to buy it for you." James smiled innocently, but the teasing in his tone made Barbara furious. She glared and said, "Are you kidding? My husband treats me so well. Forget a one million diamond necklace, even a two million piece of jewelry—if I like it, he would buy it for me immediately!"
Barbara's tone was agitated and very displeased. To her, being mocked by a man like James was a huge insult.
So Barbara lost her composure and no longer hid her contempt, speaking harshly, "But you, you can't even afford a cheap necklace worth a few thousand dollars, let alone such an expensive diamond necklace!"
Her loss of composure made Barbara look despicable.
In contrast, James didn't get angry at her outburst. His smile remained, showing much more grace. "I was just making a casual remark. No need to get so worked up, right?"
Seeing James's smiling expression made Barbara even more frustrated and uncomfortable.
However, she also realized that her previous behavior was indeed unrefined. She had to swallow her anger and put on a forced smile, retorting, "Why would I be mad? I just don't want to be misunderstood. But you, why don't you buy it?"
James smiled and said, "Buy it? Of course, I will. But this necklace is too cheap; it doesn't match Jennifer."
His words made everyone laugh, especially Barbara and Loren, who laughed so hard they could barely stand. The others in the store also mocked him, thinking James was an idiot for making such an excuse when he couldn't afford it.
Jennifer was too embarrassed to watch any longer. She walked to the side and sat down, browsing on her phone, not wanting to be too close to James.
This was too awkward for her.
James didn't care about their ridicule at all. He shook his head and looked around. Soon, his eyes lit up as he saw a diamond necklace displayed in the center, and he was immediately captivated.
This necklace was incredibly dazzling. The design and quality of the diamonds were far superior to the previous one.
The blue heart-shaped diamond in the center was stunningly beautiful. Even someone like James, who had no particular interest in jewelry, was deeply attracted to it.
He walked over to the necklace and asked, "This necklace seems nice, much prettier than the previous one. Can you take it out for me?"
Everyone's eyes followed him and saw the dazzling diamond necklace, and they were also deeply attracted. Barbara couldn't take her eyes off it, her face full of greed.
'Beautiful, truly beautiful!' Barbara exclaimed in her mind.
She definitely knew the necklace was far more stunning than the one million diamond necklace.
Jennifer heard the commotion and looked over. She was also mesmerized by the necklace in front of James.
But soon, she felt disappointed. Without even looking at the price, she knew this diamond necklace must be much more expensive than the previous one, and she was destined not to afford it.
