Chapter 421 Not Knowing What Death Is
James's face twisted into an unreadable expression. That phone call couldn't have come at a better time like someone handing you a pillow just when you were about to crash.
"Hello," James said, picking up.
Since Walter had reached out first, James wasn't about to miss the chance to put the Johnson Family in their place.
There was a brief, awkward silence on the other end before Walter's voice came through, shaky and nervous. James could almost hear him gulping. "Mr. Smith, I've been thinking a lot. What happened before was my fault. I didn't realize you are such a distinguished martial artist. Can you forgive me? I really want to become a martial artist. If you could guide me, I'd be grateful."
Walter's voice was full of remorse and humility, bespeaking his desperation for James' help. He must've spent ages working up the nerve to make this call. He probably had a whole speech planned, but hearing James's voice made him forget it all.
"Mr. Smith, please guide me. I really want this. I'm begging you," Walter pleaded, swallowing his pride. He'd gone back to his family and told a couple of elder martial artists about James's skills. They'd praised James to the skies, telling Walter that with James's guidance, he had a real shot at breaking into the martial artist realm.
Walter's desire for James's mentorship had only grown. He'd ditched his old arrogance, realizing how childish his provocations had been. James hadn't been scared of him; he just couldn't be bothered.
Now, Walter was filled with awe and fear, like he was talking to an elder.
There was no denying it; a top-tier martial artist was way out of his league.
James said, "I can guide you."
Walter was stunned for a moment, then his eyes went wide with disbelief. The next second, he was jumping up and down, overwhelmed with excitement. "Really? That's amazing! Mr. Smith, no, Master Smith!"
Walter was practically shouting, his voice cracking with emotion, leaving James speechless.
Just as James was about to respond, Ezra, seeing him on the phone, lost it. He pointed at James, yelling, "You idiot! You're about to die, and you don't even know it! How dare you talk on the phone? You're asking for it! I'm gonna kill you!" He shouted and then pulled out his phone to call for backup.
Walter, hearing the commotion on the other end, immediately asked, "Master Smith, is something going on over there? Did I just hear someone cursing you?"
Walter calling him "Master Smith" made James feel a bit helpless. He said, "Sounds like you heard it too. Do you have a brother named Ezra? He's acting all high and mighty, calling people over to kill me. Walter, I'll give you ten minutes. If you can get here in time, I'll help you break through as a martial artist. If not, forget it."
James's tone was calm, but it sent chills down Walter's spine. He quickly replied, "I don't have a brother named Ezra, Master Smith. You must be mistaken. You're a guest of the Jenkins Family. Who would dare mess with you? Besides, this has nothing to do with me."
"You've got nine minutes left," James cut him off, still calm.
Walter started to panic. He realized James wasn't kidding, and his heart began to race.
"Master Smith, where are you? I'll be there right away!"
"I'm at Valor's house." With that, James hung up.
He didn't really care if Walter made it in ten minutes. With his skills, he could handle Ezra and the Johnson Family on his own. But if Walter showed up in time, that'd be a bonus.
This wasn't James's opportunity; it was Walter's. Whether he could break through as a martial artist depended on his own effort.
Meanwhile, Ezra finished his call, a wicked grin spreading across his face. "You fool, you dare oppose me? My guys will be here in ten minutes. Get ready to die!"
He couldn't wait to see James suffer.
The Johnson Family members in the room sneered at James. They surrounded him, locked the door, and cut off any escape routes.
Thinking James was about to die, they weren't scared. Instead, they sat around drinking coffee, each of them fuming.
"Are you smiling? You'll be crying soon enough!"
"Only fools would be scared by his smile."
"He doesn't know what he's in for. Offending the Jenkins Family? Dennis is a fool for picking such a dumb son-in-law."
"Just wait. When the Jenkins Family's backup arrives, he'll be begging like a stray dog."
The Johnson Family members mocked him, clearly enjoying themselves.
Dennis and Kaitlyn were anxious and regretting their decision to come back.
They even resented James, thinking he was reckless and brainless! This was Starlight State, not Serenity State. No matter how powerful James was back home, he couldn't possibly contend with them here. They felt doomed.
Only Jennifer, seeing James so calm, wasn't too worried. She tried to comfort Dennis and Kaitlyn, "Dad, Mom, don't worry. With James here, nothing will happen. James was talking with Walter Jenkins on the phone just now. And Walter's coming to help us."
Dennis said anxiously, "This is reckless! This is Starlight State, not Serenity State. No matter how powerful James is, how could he have met Walter from the Jenkins Family so quickly?"
