Chapter 192 A Defeated Return

Everyone was stunned upon hearing these words.

'Why does it sound so much like a joke?

'Could it be that the magnates always acted so whimsically?' they thought to themselves.

Seeing Mr. Jackson's earnest demeanor on stage, the audience below began to take it seriously.

In reality, Mr. Jackson felt quite helpless inside. This speech was something Ms. Jackson had instructed him to say; it was merely an excuse. He was also very curious about the man who had made Ms. Jackson so excited that she rushed to Lindwood City without a moment's rest.

"You don't need to be surprised. That's the truth. As long as any of you can make my daughter laugh, you will have the opportunity to be alone with her and see her face. If you manage to win my daughter's favor during this time, then congratulations—you can become the son-in-law of the Jackson family," Mr. Jackson said with a smile.

In his heart, however, he  smiled bitterly. He, Roberts Jackson, who was once feared on the battlefield, had now fallen to the point of spouting nonsense in a small place like Lindwood City. He truly felt wronged.

However, he dared not show this emotion. If Ms. Jackson found out, he would face terrible consequences.

Soon, after observing the young people below, he felt relieved. There were people worse off than him. He knew that these young talents, full of vigor and hope, did not realize that they were merely tools in Ms. Jackson's eyes. As long as she didn't want to laugh, no one in this world could make her laugh.

"Did I hear that right? All we have to do is make Ms. Jackson laugh? Is it really that simple?"

"That's true. I can do it without any effort."

"Making girls laugh is what I'm best at."

"Darn it, making girls laugh is the one thing I'm worst at."

After Roberts stepped down from the stage, the young talents present began to discuss fervently. Those with a humorous personality were overjoyed, feeling their chances were greater. Meanwhile, those who were more introverted and not good at making girls laugh were worried. Without exception, they all frantically searched for jokes on the phone.

Ms. Jackson scanned the crowd from below the stage. She did not see James. She frowned. She felt strange for his absence because she had received news that James was in Lindenwood City.

'Could it be that he didn't attend tonight's banquet?' she thought to herself.

Joe returned to the stage and said with a smile, "Everyone understood Mr. Jackson's words, right? Such an opportunity is a once-in-a-century chance. You must seize it and make Ms. Jackson laugh to bring glory to Lindwood City."

Joe was particularly eloquent, and under his incitement, the enthusiasm of the young talents present increased even more.

Soon, the first person came up to try. He was dressed in a white suit, with makeup on his face and shiny hair. He looked very handsome, much like a celebrity in the entertainment industry, the type that many girls liked.

He coughed twice and walked up to Ms. Jackson. He was so excited that his body trembled slightly. Then he began to tell a joke he had just found online. "Hi, Ms. Jackson. I am Alvin King. The first time I saw you, I was struck by your beauty. You are the most graceful woman I have ever seen..."

However, before he could finish speaking, Ms. Jackson interrupted, "Next."

The deep affection Alvin had painstakingly mustered instantly froze on his face, and he stopped speaking. He looked like a duck with its neck wrung, utterly ridiculous.

Unwilling to give up, he tried to struggle a bit more, but Joe, standing nearby, gave him a fierce glare, making him slunk off the stage. Alvin's one and only chance was thus lost, and the more he thought about it, the more aggrieved he felt, to the point where he couldn't help but cry.

With Alvin as an example, the remaining young talents put away their dismissive attitudes and became serious.

Next, a second handsome young man went up. He was very good-looking and wore cologne. He fared even worse than the first one; Ms. Jackson eliminated him right after he introduced his name, causing him to break down on the spot.

Then came the third one, also a handsome man, but he seemed more introverted than the previous two. He walked up to Ms. Jackson and, not daring to introduce his name, started telling a joke directly. However, before he could finish, he couldn't help but laugh out loud himself, and many guests around were also amused.

Yet Ms. Jackson remained completely unmoved, her expression cold. "Next."

Several young men went up in succession, and Ms. Jackson eliminated them all without exception.

The remaining young men, including Jared and Brian, began to feel apprehensive. They hadn't expected it to be this difficult. The jokes told by the previous contestants had made them laugh, but Ms. Jackson remained indifferent.

Their confidence dwindled by more than half.

"Michael, could it be that Ms. Jackson is just teasing these guys? So many have gone up, and she hasn't laughed once," Harmony whispered.

Michael shook his head and said, "I don't think so. After all, she's the daughter of a prominent family. Why would she come to Lindwood City just to mess with people? She probably just doesn't fancy them. By the way, where's James? Why hasn't he come back yet?"

"I don't know, maybe he's still in the bathroom." Harmony suddenly realized something and said. "Michael, you don't mean to have James try, do you? He has a wife!"

Michael replied, "What nonsense are you talking about? I'm just worried he might have sneaked off. He's been in the restroom for almost twenty minutes, hasn't he?"

Harmony was startled and said, "Now that you mention it, he might have really sneaked off! No, I have to go find him."

"What’s the rush? Call him first. From what I know of him, he wouldn't go back on his word," Michael said, picking up his phone and dialing.

He couldn't get through to him on the phone.

Michael began to have doubts, too.

"Michael, did he answer?" she asked.

"Can’t get through," Michael frowned.

Harmony immediately fumed. "He must have run off. He's so despicable. I knew we couldn't trust him."

At that moment, a voice came from behind. "Ms. Brown, didn't anyone teach you not to speak ill of others behind their backs?"

The voice belonged to James.
