Chapter 412 The Johnson Family's Estate
James gently took her hand and said, "Hey, it's all good now. Those bad times are behind us. I'll keep you safe from here on out."
Jennifer looked at him, her eyes full of gratitude. "James, having you is such a blessing," she said sincerely.
With a soft smile, James replied, "Things are only going to get better for us."
Jennifer replaced her agitated face with a sweet smile.
Since James had come back, Jennifer had been smiling more and had changed in subtle ways. She still had her cool demeanor, but she wasn't as withdrawn as before. She'd become more feminine and charming, especially around James, where she could show her softer side without hesitation.
This was the happiest she'd ever been. She was so grateful that during those five years of James's absence, she had neither abandoned nor betrayed him.
Thinking about the previous night always filled her with a warm, sweet feeling.
The Johnson Family wasn't in Lindwood City or even in Serenity State; they were in Starlight State, which was pretty far away and required a flight.
Jennifer had bought the family's tickets a day in advance for an 8 AM flight, so they all headed to the airport early in the morning.
As they boarded, the Dennis family's emotions were all over the place, and no one said much, especially Jennifer, who felt pretty resistant. If James hadn't been with her, she definitely wouldn't have chosen to go back to the Johnson Family.
Dennis, on the other hand, was mostly excited. Born in a different era, he had strong traditional values. Even as an illegitimate child, he dreamed of being accepted back into the Johnson Family and being buried in their cemetery after his death.
It was this obsession that had carried him through the Johnson Family's humiliation over the years.
After a two-hour flight, they landed in Sunridge City, Starlight State. As they left the airport, Dennis's eyes were red, his lips trembling. "After more than a decade, I'm finally back," he said deeply.
Kaitlyn held his hand tightly, her eyes full of tenderness. They had been married for thirty years, and their lives were intertwined. A single glance could convey their feelings.
Jennifer's eyes also showed a mix of emotions as she sighed softly.
James, however, wasn't as sentimental. He'd been to Sunridge City before, but it was to settle scores, not to sightsee, so he didn't have much attachment to the place. He was curious about what had happened to those rich kids he had dealt with back then.
They had been pretty domineering in Sunridge City, and now five years had passed. Their influence must have grown stronger. He wondered what their reaction would be if they saw him now.
He had learned from Emberlyn that during his five-year disappearance, everyone in the circle had presumed him dead. Many of those he had once tormented even held a celebration that lasted three days and nights.
If they found out James wasn't dead and was even stronger than before, their world would probably crumble.
James shook his head, pushing those thoughts aside. He was more mature and steady now, not interested in picking fights with all those domineering folks anymore. This was his biggest change, and probably what Alistair had hoped for the most.
"Dad, didn't you say someone is coming to pick us up?" Jennifer asked, frowning as they stood outside the airport, waiting for what felt like forever.
Dennis sighed, "Maybe they haven't spotted us yet. I'll call Molly."
He pulled out his phone and made a call. After a bit, he hung up, looking a bit annoyed. Jennifer pressed, "Dad, what's going on?"
Dennis paused for a moment before saying, "Your aunt said she's busy and sent us the location to get there ourselves."
"What?" Jennifer's face darkened. "We haven't been back in years, and they can't even send someone to pick us up? I didn't expect Molly to come herself, but she couldn't even send a junior? They clearly don't want us back. They're already making things difficult."
Jennifer's resentment towards the Johnson Family was clear, and her expression showed it.
Dennis tried to calm her down, "We're already here. With modern transportation, it's the same if we go ourselves. Maybe they really are busy. Let's not be so petty."
Kaitlyn chimed in, "He's right, Jennifer. No matter what, they are your elders. We can't expect them to come personally. Besides, they've always been like this. It's no big deal if we show a bit more grace."
Despite Kaitlyn and Dennis's attempts at humility, Jennifer was still angry and felt helpless. She had no love for the Johnson Family, even bordering on hatred. If it weren't for Dennis's request, she would never have come back.
She couldn't forget the humiliation and torment her father Dennis suffered at the hands of the Johnson Family, nor the countless insults and abuse she endured as a child during the two years she lived there.
She sighed deeply, reluctantly agreeing with Dennis but muttering, "Coming back might be a mistake."
Dennis pretended not to hear her. He went out and hailed a cab, giving the driver the Johnson Family's address.
The driver looked surprised. "Silver Crest Villas? That's a high-end community only the rich can afford. I've heard all the houses there are villas, and any one of them costs tens of millions of dollars. Are you residents of Silver Crest Villas?"
Dennis, with a hint of pride, replied, "Yeah, my father lives there."
"Wow," the driver said, his attitude shifting to one of respect. Silver Crest Villas was clearly well-known.
Due to traffic, it took almost an hour to reach Silver Crest Villas. The place was indeed luxurious, with no high-rise apartments in sight, just one villa after another, all lavishly decorated and spacious.
As they went deeper, they saw even larger estates.
The Johnson Family lived in a very grand estate halfway up the mountain, occupying a huge area.
