Chapter 631 The Most Terrifying Means
James quickly saw the miraculous herb—a thousand-year-old ginseng. Marcus had it stored in a fancy box, perfectly preserved.
The ginseng was thick as a calf's leg, two feet long, and had a golden hue with some weird patterns on its skin. The potent medicinal energy radiating from it made James's heart race.
"This is the real deal!" James was pumped. He wasn't letting this treasure slip away, no matter the cost.
Marcus's eyes darted around as he asked, "Mr. Smith, I didn't lie to you, right?"
James shot back, "This herb's worth trading for a person. Hand it over first—I'm done with that other guy."
Marcus hesitated for a second before walking over to James and handing him the box. James took it, then gave Sidney the nod to start the car. With a smirk, he turned back to Marcus. "I'm a man of my word, but just to be safe, I'm gonna take some precautions."
With that, a few silver needles appeared in James's hand. With a flick of his wrist, they shot into the motionless black-clad dude. The guy barely felt a pinch, like a tiny ant bite, and didn't notice anything else.
Marcus's face dropped. "Mr. Smith, what the hell are you doing?"
The black-clad guy, now able to move again, jumped up and got behind Marcus. "Marcus, we can't let this slide. Grab him!"
But Marcus, after a quick thought, shook his head. "No, Vaughn. I made a deal with him." He knew those silver needle techniques were no joke—way scarier than poison—and he wasn't about to risk it.
Seeing Marcus's reaction, Vaughn's eyes burned with rage. "Marcus, Theo, you're really gonna let this slide?"
Marcus and Theo's expressions changed, but James, holding the box, walked to the door. "I'm leaving now. Take your time to discuss. Here's a tip: if I encounter any danger in Aetheria, Vaughn's life is mine!"
Vaughn was still waiting for Marcus and Theo to make a move. When he heard James's words, he snapped. He whipped his head around, his eyes bloodshot, and roared, "You son of a bitch, you think you can scare me?!"
In a flash, Vaughn pulled a gun from his waist and fired at James. But James was already gone, vanishing from the doorway the second Vaughn's hand moved.
"Vaughn, your life is mine!"
As the gunshots faded, James's voice came from a distance. He was clearly far off, but the moment those words hit, Vaughn suddenly dropped his gun, clutching his head, veins popping on his forehead, sweat pouring down.
Finally, Vaughn couldn't take it anymore—he let out a blood-curdling scream, writhing on the ground. Marcus and Theo rushed over, panic in their voices, "Vaughn, what the hell's going on?"
"It hurts!"
Marcus and Theo tried to flip Vaughn over to see what was wrong, but the second they touched him, his screams turned even more agonizing.
"Marcus, what kind of black magic is this?!" Theo barked, his voice shaky.
By now, even Theo, dense as he was, realized James had done something to Vaughn and was freaked out by him. Marcus, seeing Vaughn's state, was on edge too. Hearing Theo, he took a deep breath and said, "This is Sunlandia's medical technique. It can heal or destroy. Vaughn pissed off James—now what?"
Theo was shook. "What do we do? We can't just let him suffer like this!"
"I know, but begging James now won't cut it. Don't freak out—let me think!" Marcus said, then went deep into thought. He had someone keep an eye on Vaughn and took a seat, racking his brain. Meanwhile, Theo knocked Vaughn out cold, giving them some temporary peace.
Marcus glanced at Vaughn and approved of Theo's action. But as soon as he looked away, Vaughn, who had been knocked out, groaned and woke up in pain.
"Kill me, kill me now. Someone, kill me!"
Seeing Vaughn in such agony, Marcus felt a chill down his spine. James's methods were more terrifying than a devil's.
"Marcus, if you don't do something, Vaughn won't make it!"
Indeed, Vaughn was on the verge of collapse, banging his head on the ground and begging to be killed. A fourth-level master being tortured like this showed how intense the pain was.
Just as Marcus was scrambling for a plan, one of his guys from Religion burst in, dropping to his knees in front of him. "Master, James is still here. Looks like he's waiting for someone."
Marcus's eyes lit up at the news. He turned to Theo and said, "Keep Vaughn in check. Don't let him do anything stupid. I'm heading out to talk to James. We'll figure this out when I'm back."
Without waiting for Theo's response, Marcus bolted for the underground parking lot.
In the parking lot, James sat in the back seat, holding the box and grinning from ear to ear. This encounter with Religion had been extremely profitable.
"Mr. Smith, if we don't leave now, Religion's people will come, and we won't be able to leave."
James chuckled, "Sidney, Religion has ruled Aetheria for so long. How many good things do you think they have tucked away?"
Sidney's face lit up, but then fell. "Yeah, but there's only two of us. Even if they let us grab stuff, we can't haul much!"
James rolled his eyes. "You're such a dumbass. Control Marcus, and the vault's ours! Think about it—this place is almost as loaded as Sunlandia."
Sidney's eyes widened. "So we're just here to set a trap for Marcus?"
James snapped his fingers. "Bingo. Marcus'll show, but who knows if he's rolling solo or bringing backup. If it's a crew, we bail."
