Chapter 96 Refusal

Jennifer said this lightly, revealing waves of trembling, showing the unrest of her emotions at the moment.

Indeed, this was too challenging for her, her heart was beating so fast it felt like it was about to jump out.

In an instant, James's nerves tightened, his breathing becoming rapid.

"I..." James opened his mouth, not knowing what to say, his body stiff.

Jennifer slowly turned around and hugged him.

At this moment, he could clearly feel Jennifer's body temperature and that wonderful touch.

He felt like a newbie, nervous and excited.

In this scene, which he had fantasized about countless times over the past five years, when it finally happened, he found himself at a loss.

Throughout the five years of being Jennifer's husband, he had endured numerous insults and faced constant disdain from many, particularly in Jennifer's presence. He felt as insignificant as dust, despite their marriage, never having even held Jennifer's hand.

Jennifer's sudden initiative now stirred genuine excitement within him, evoking a sense of triumph.

But even so, he hadn't completely lost his composure. He took a deep breath and then came back to his senses, looking directly at Jennifer. He nervously asked, "Do you really love me?"

Looking into James's clear eyes, Jennifer hesitated. Yes, had she really fallen in love with James? Or was it just an immature act done out of gratitude for tonight's events?

Seeing her hesitation, James knew the answer. He smiled bitterly. And told her, "Go to sleep, you have to work tomorrow."

Jennifer bit her lip. She frustratedly said, "Is this not important? We are husband and wife, and having children is a natural thing. Besides, isn't this something you've been looking forward to for a long time?"

Yes, he had been looking forward to it for a long time, with countless fantasies and desires. Why, when the moment finally arrived, did he feel so awkward?

Seeing James's silence, Jennifer became annoyed. Suddenly, she turned over, straddled James, and began to undress him in a fit of pique.

"What are you doing?!" James asked and was shocked.

Jennifer didn't speak, she roughly undressed James, then sat up straight and began to undress herself.

James quickly grabbed her hand and said in a deep voice, "Stop it!"

Jennifer bit her lip, still not saying a word. She struggled a couple of times but couldn't break free. She simply pressed down, wanting to kiss James.

James turned his face away, avoiding her, which only made Jennifer more furious. She seemed like a different person, continuing to try to kiss James.

Originally, she had intended to be gentle and give her virginity to James, so she wouldn't owe him anything.

James had saved her from John, helping her vent some frustration tonight. While she was touched, she also felt a strange guilt towards James and wanted to make up for him.

So, when she was showering earlier, she had to convince herself for so long because she knew that if she didn't give herself to him tonight, she wouldn't be able to muster the courage the next morning.

And James's refusal was because he saw through Jennifer's intentions.

One could say James was being finicky, cowardly, or petty, but he never lacked high esteem.

"That's enough." James pushed her away, got up from the bed, and said, "You don't need to feel guilty. Helping you out of difficult situations is something I should do."

After saying this, James lay on the floor.

Jennifer stayed on the bed, biting her lip, feeling a complex mix of emotions that she couldn't quite describe.

She had thought that as long as she took the initiative tonight, she would definitely be able to win over James. She was so beautiful, with such a great figure, wherever she went, she was the center of attention for men. She had absolute confidence in herself.

And James had been coveting her for a long time, she knew that. So why, when she took the initiative, did James reject her? Was she not charming enough?

She felt wronged. Was it also wrong for her to fulfill her wifely duties?

But she didn't say anything more, lying on the bed, starting to sleep, and the room returned to silence.

The difference was that the previous silence was filled with ambiguity, a heart-pounding silence.

And now, the silence was filled with uneasiness and discomfort, a silence that made time drag on.

James wanted Jennifer, that was certain. But the premise was to win her heart, not win her out of gratitude or guilt.

A night of silence.

Jennifer couldn't sleep that night. It was almost dawn, only then she fell asleep in a daze.

James was also sleepless, but his stamina was much stronger than the average person's; two hours of sleep could make up for a whole night for him.

Picking up his phone, he realized that Michael had called him five times. He had put it on silent and missed the calls, along with a message: "James, something came up at home last night, I didn't catch your call in time, sorry. I called you a few times, is there something you need from me?"

James knew that Michael must have had something urgent last night if he didn't answer the phone. So, he replied to the message, telling him it wasn't a big deal. Shortly after, Michael called, "Hey, James, what's up? Why were you looking for me?"

"Nothing," James replied.

"Oh, that's good." Michael breathed a sigh of relief and said, with a hint of fatigue in his tone, caught by James's curiosity, "Michael, you sound tired, did you not rest well last night?"

Michael knew James's capabilities, so he wasn't surprised to be caught so soon. He sighed and said, "Something happened."

James became curious upon hearing this. He had known Michael for a while and knew he was a confident and strong person. Usually, he could remain calm and composed when the troubles that he encountered weren't too serious. But now, hearing the helplessness in Michael's voice, it was something James hadn't heard before.

They were good friends, so he asked, "Michael, is something troubling you?"

Michael had intended to tell James, but when the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back, shook his head, and evaded the question.

It wasn't that he didn't trust James, but he felt it wasn't necessary. James's medical skills were impressive, but the trouble he was facing this time couldn't be solved just by medical expertise.

James, being tactful, didn't press further. Since Michael didn't say anything, there must be a reason. In fact, he could guess that the trouble was quite significant, and Michael probably thought he couldn't help, so he didn't bother mentioning it.

After a few more words, they hung up, and James went on to his morning exercise.

Through the events of last night, another layer of estrangement had formed between him and Jennifer. When Jennifer woke up at noon and they met, both of them felt somewhat awkward.

After Jennifer went to work, James received a call from Harmony.
