Chapter 435 Did Mr. Smith Buy a Car?

Quade said this with his head held high, exuding immense pride and confidence, and even deliberately glanced at James, the provocation in his eyes unmistakable.

In his view, James was just an ordinary individual, with total assets probably not even reaching twenty thousand dollars—a man of modest means. To him, such a person was nothing.

In reality, even if James was poor, he hadn't provoked him, but he just couldn't stand Brandy's admiration for James.

A girl as beautiful as Brandy should be admiring him.

James could easily understand Quade's thoughts. He had encountered this kind of situation countless times and was quite experienced in dealing with it.

However, Brandy paid no heed to his words, responding with nothing more than indifference. This instantly caused Quade's expression to stiffen, leaving him feeling profoundly uncomfortable.

Then Brandy said, "Juniper, thank you for coming to pick me up, but I need to have dinner with Mr. Smith first. I'll call you later."

Juniper immediately frowned. She had gone to great lengths to trick Brandy into coming to the City of Mysteries, so how could she let Brandy go so easily?

Juniper looked at James, unable to understand how this unremarkable man had managed to gain Brandy's favor. She had known Brandy since they were kids and knew better than anyone how introverted Brandy was. She had never witnessed Brandy alone in the company of any man. On this occasion, she had deceived Brandy into attending under the pretense of a medical conference.

Quade was even more unhappy,  with his hostility towards James growing, along with his jealousy.

Juniper said, "Brandy, what are you talking about? We're good friends, and you've finally come to the City of Mysteries. We have to host you properly. How can you have dinner with an outsider?"

She directly called James an outsider and glared at him, hinting that he should leave.

Brandy said, "Mr. Smith is not an outsider. He has guided me on many medical issues along the way, and I must treat him to dinner."

Her resolute demeanor greatly infuriated Juniper, making her feel that Brandy was not showing her any respect. This time, Juniper had tricked Brandy into coming to the City of Mysteries not just to attend a medical conference but mainly to use Brandy to flatter a big shot.

If she succeeded and won the favor of that big shot, she could develop better in the City of Mysteries and even get a house for free. The housing prices in the City of Mysteries were already prohibitively high. With Juniper's income, she could never afford a house in her lifetime.

Now, Juniper just needed to bring Brandy to that big shot, and she could easily get a house. Such a good opportunity might only come once in a lifetime, so she wouldn't miss it! As for her friendship with Brandy? She didn't care at all. Besides, she wasn't asking Brandy to die, just to sleep with the big shot. She had no psychological burden at all.

Furthermore, if the big shot truly developed an interest in Brandy, it would be considered Brandy's good fortune, and Brandy ought to be profoundly grateful to her.

"Brandy, we've been good friends for so many years. Are you saying that doesn't compare to an outsider? Besides, can't you treat him to dinner some other time? Why does it have to be now?" Juniper said sadly.

Juniper was well-acquainted with Brandy, aware that Brandy was tender-hearted and maintained a strong defense against men but was significantly less guarded around women, particularly those from their shared hometown.

Brandy hesitated.

Quade suggested, "How about we all have dinner together? Wouldn't that be delightful?"

Brandy felt troubled, but then James said, "Sure, let's all have dinner together."

Brandy was actually reluctant. She had planned to have dinner alone with James to ask him many medical questions. If they ate with Juniper and the others, she wouldn't have the chance.

Since James had agreed, she couldn't refuse anymore and nodded in agreement.

Seeing Brandy agree, Juniper and Quade exchanged a glance, both showing a look of success in their scheme.

They didn't realize that their little actions were clearly seen by James.

James had come back this time without telling the Smith Family, sneaking over by himself because he planned to stay in the City of Mysteries for a couple of days to enjoy the scenery before returning to the Smith family.

So Brandy's matter didn't affect his plans.

Moreover, with a kind-hearted girl like Brandy, he couldn't just stand by and do nothing.

Outside, a black BMW was parked. Quade pressed the key to unlock it, and Juniper proudly said, "Brandy, you're in luck. This BMW is the one Quade bought just last week. It's very expensive, and besides me and Quade, no one else has sat in it. You're lucky today."

Her tone was full of pride as she was sure that Brandy had never sat in such an expensive car.

Quade was smug. This car was actually bought with his family's money, but it was registered in his name. He claimed it was bought with his own earnings, which gave him a lot of fame.

"Mr. Smith, what kind of car do you drive?" He shifted the topic to James.

Departing the train station, Brandy had been conversing with James without so much as a glance in his direction, which greatly irritated him. In his opinion, James was merely a destitute individual, the sort one could find on any street corner, and had no business speaking to someone as beautiful as Brandy.

Given the opportunity, Quade could hardly wait to ridicule James and reveal his true nature to Brandy.

He thought that even if James didn't have a car, he wouldn't admit it and would probably say he had a regular car. Then he would ask James about some details of buying a car. Generally, poor people who hadn't bought a car wouldn't know these details, so he would embarrass James no matter what.

However, he didn't expect James to say directly, "I have no car."

Quade clearly hadn't anticipated James to be so candid, a trait he deemed foolish. Upon realizing it, he laughed even more heartily, "Mr. Smith, you're so young and talented, yet you haven't purchased a car? In this day and age, anyone of ordinary means can afford one. Why haven't you bought one, Mr. Smith?"

'A loser without a car is just so funny.' Quade thought.

Then he deliberately glanced at Brandy, implying, 'Look, this is the person you admire, someone who doesn't even have a car. How pathetic.'

Brandy was simple, but not stupid. She could see that Quade was deliberately mocking James, which made her very angry.
