Chapter 281 Husband and Wife
Seeing Jennifer's miserable features, James wanted to comfort her but couldn't find a word.
Having known Jennifer for five years, James had never seen her so remorseful and guilty. He could fully feel the torment in Jennifer's heart at this moment and her longing for his forgiveness.
But had he really forgiven her?
The response James received was in the negative. It was not a matter of his lacking magnanimity, but rather a consequence of his having suffered a profound emotional injury. That night, he had pleaded for Jennifer's understanding, lowering himself to the utmost degree. Even after Jennifer slapped him, he didn't give up, hoping she would trust him even a little, rather than completely ignoring his explanation because of a few photos.
If they were just a newly dating couple, James wouldn't have been so upset. But they weren't; they had been married for five years. James had never done anything to betray Jennifer. Even if Jennifer was furious, she should have given him a chance to explain. But Jennifer didn't; she was completely unreasonable and refused to listen to his explanation.
Whenever he thought of the things Jennifer said to him that night and how she hit him, James found it hard to let go.
Perhaps his profound affection for her was the reason. James was not one to nurse resentments, yet he could not simply disregard the incident merely due to a casual apology from Jennifer. His feelings weren't that cheap.
Seeing James lower his head in silence, Jennifer felt very sad. She wanted to smile but couldn't, only managing to pull out a stiff expression that looked worse than crying. "I know my request is too much. I did such an excessive thing to you and now want your forgiveness. It's unrealistic. I was too naive, always thinking things were simpler than they are."
Her words were chaotic and illogical, just like her heart.
Seeing her like this, James felt a pang of compassion, but he still found it hard to let go.
"You look very tired. Go rest. I'm fine," James said after a long while.
Jennifer looked up and shook her head, seemingly no longer concerned about whether James would forgive her. She forced a smile again and said, "I'm not tired. I just slept. By the way, I'll get the nurse to change your dressing."
As she stood up to call the nurse, her leg went numb, and she almost fell, but she managed to steady herself by holding onto the table.
"You really need to have some rest." James sighed.
"I'm fine, just a bit numb in my leg," Jennifer shook her head and then went out to call the nurse.
James sighed. He had never seen Jennifer be so perseverant.
Soon, the nurse came, changed James' dressing, and pressed on his abdomen, telling Jennifer that James could be fed some food.
James was indeed hungry. Hearing his stomach growl, Jennifer quietly went to the cafeteria to get him some food.
Whilst Jennifer was procuring the sustenance, James endeavored to rise from his bed, yet promptly relinquished his attempt. He was still too injured. Much of his skin had necrotized, and even with his recovery ability, it would take at least a week before he could walk.
For an ordinary person, it would take months to get out of bed.
Soon, James realized an awkward problem: he couldn't move, but he felt an urge to use the bathroom.
Especially after eating, he needed to go even more.
"Um, could you call the nurse for me?" James coughed twice and said to Jennifer.
Seeing James' unnatural expression, Jennifer was puzzled but didn't ask because of what had happened earlier. She nodded and went to find the nurse.
When the nurse arrived, she asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
James said, "Do you have any male nurses here?"
"Male nurses?" The nurse was puzzled and asked, "Why do you need a male nurse?"
"Just call a male nurse over," James said, looking a bit unnatural.
The nurse thought for a moment and then understood, smiling. "You need to use the bathroom, right?"
James nodded, feeling a bit embarrassed.
However, the nurse said, "Sorry, we have very few male nurses, and they're occupied now."
James then said, "Then, can you call some doctor to help me? I'm in a bit of a hurry."
He felt very embarrassed after saying this. He never thought he would need help to use the bathroom. It was so humiliating!
Jennifer, standing nearby, also looked a bit unnatural.
The nurse, not understanding, said, "Is she your wife? Just let her help you."
Gazing at Jennifer's awkward expression, James felt a bit troubled.
The nurse's expression turned a bit strange, "What, aren't you two married?"
"We are married."
Before James could finish, Jennifer, who had been silent, suddenly spoke, "I will do it, just leave the room for us."
"Okay, I'm leaving." the nurse said with a smile. She then gave some simple instructions and left.
James was confused.
'Did I hear it right? Jennifer would accompany me to the bathroom, and help me take off my pants?'
Following the departure of the nurse, the room fell silent once more, suffused with an atmosphere of awkwardness and a subtle hint of ambiguity.
Jennifer glanced at James, then quickly looked away. She quietly locked the door, returned to the bedside, picked up the urinal from under the bed, and looked at James, feeling very shy. Her eyes were evasive, and she was very bashful. In a small voice, she asked, "Can you turn on your side?"
James swallowed, his mind in a whirl. This situation was too stimulating for him.
Having Jennifer help him use the bathroom was something he had never imagined before! This feeling was so strange!
Looking at Jennifer's blushing face, his heartbeat quickened uncontrollably. He then cooperatively turned on his side.
Jennifer bit her lip. Her heart was racing even more than James'. She was extremely nervous. Helping a man with such a thing was a huge challenge for her!
She moved to the side facing away from the door, squatted down, and began to take off his pants.
