Chapter 161 A Self-Inflicted Slap
"Oh, he said he wanted to introduce his granddaughter to me," James joked.
Jennifer's face immediately fell, and she gritted her teeth, saying, "I didn't expect Mr. Wheeler to be so improper behind that upright facade!"
"Exactly! He even showed me a picture of his granddaughter. She looks... Ouch! Why are you pinching me?"
Jennifer glared at him, got into the car, and said angrily, "Walk home yourself!"
Fearing her fury, James quickly got into the car and said, "I was kidding. Mr. Wheeler knows I have a beautiful wife. He would never introduce his granddaughter to me. But, honey, you look really cute when you're jealous."
"I'm not jealous! Get out of the car!"
After some playful bickering, James asked seriously, "Sweetheart, have you heard about the upcoming medical exchange conference in Pearl Peak City next month?"
"Yes, why?" Jennifer suddenly glared.
James replied earnestly, "I was just kidding earlier. Mr. Wheeler actually invited me to that medical exchange conference next month. I want to know more about its significance."
After hearing this, Jennifer finally became serious and said, I heard the reputation of the medicine practitioners, like those from Wheeler’s side, has been dwindling. They’ve lost several years in a row. If they lose again this year, they might lose their standing entirely next year."
James nodded, this matched what he had heard from Edwin. He then learned more details about the conference from Jennifer, gaining a deeper understanding.
Having settled the matters with the distributors, Jennifer and James left Pearl Peak City and returned home.
The next day, Jennifer began working on the opening of the medical clinic.
The opening day was set for a week later.
Jennifer was busy, leaving James with a lot of free time since she handled everything. With his newfound leisure, he sent messages to his family inquiring about the five-year term coming to an end, but the response was the same as before: just wait.
If not for knowing his family's immense power, James would have suspected something serious had happened to them.
Since they asked him to wait, he decided to wait. He had no other plans anyway.
In reality, he had spent the past five years living with The Johnson Family. He found it hard to adjust to the thought of leaving them and immediately returning to his own family.
Deep down, he had gradually accepted this way of life.
While Jennifer was busy with the clinic, James wasn't idle either. He was fully focused on breaking the seal, striving to restore his peak strength as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, in a high-end café in Pearl Peak City, two young people sat across from each other at one of the best tables.
The man was handsome, exuding confidence and wealth, clearly a distinguished young aristocrat.
The woman, even more striking, radiated an aura of cold elegance and sensuality, her stunning figure evident even while seated.
This woman was none other than Harmony, whom Jennifer and James had met before. Opposite her sat her former fiancé, Jared, the man who had personally sent someone to her home to break off their engagement.
Jared gently swirled his coffee, gazing at Harmony with deep affection. His eyes revealed his unabashed infatuation and passion for her.
He deeply regretted it; had he known Harmony's illness could be cured, he would never have broken off the engagement with her!
In the face of Jared's affection, Harmony remained indifferent, her face consistently cold, as if nothing in the world could catch her attention.
Finally, Jared couldn’t hold back any longer, "Harmony, can we start over?"
His voice was magnetic, his eyes so full of emotion they could melt anything. Yet Harmony remained unmoved, her hand stirring her coffee without pause, her demeanor completely calm.
"Did you call me here just to say this?" Harmony looked up, her gaze cold and devoid of any emotion.
Seeing her expression, Jared felt a deep pain in his heart!
He had prepared extensively for this meeting, not only dressing impeccably but also having a makeup artist enhance his looks to exude maximum charm.
He aimed to win Harmony back, just like when they first met, using his looks, humor, and charisma to capture her heart.
He knew that breaking off the engagement was a huge blow for Harmony. But he was confident that as long as Harmony was willing to meet him, he could win her back for sure.
Before coming, he had imagined a dozen different reactions from Harmony, intense, hateful, reluctant, compassionate, but he had never expected Harmony to be so indifferent. It was a cold expression as if she saw him as strange!
This situation worried Jared the most.
However, he still believed that Harmony's heart couldn't be as cold as it appeared. He knew her well enough to be certain she loved him deeply. He was sure she couldn’t be indifferent in his presence.
So he showed an even more affectionate gaze and said, "Harmony, I know what happened hurt you deeply, but please believe me, it wasn’t my intention. It was my family’s decision. I wasn't in Lindwood City then. I didn’t even know they had done such a cruel thing! Harmony, I'm so sorry. I love you. Let's start over. Our wedding can proceed as planned. I’ll give you a grand wedding, making you the happiest woman in the world. I swear!"
As he spoke, he reached out to hold Harmony's hand.
Harmony immediately withdrew her hand and said, "Mr. Perry, we are just ordinary friends now. Please respect me, or I will leave."
Jared's face stiffened, his handsome features contorting unpleasantly.
Harmony’s cold attitude was extremely displeasing, but he had no choice but to endure it, showing a look of loss, "Harmony, I’m sorry for hurting you. Please, give me a chance. I was wrong."
Harmony's expression remained unchanged, keeping him at a distance.
Jared gritted his teeth and slapped himself hard on the face, the sound loud and clear. Harmony looked at him in astonishment, and others in the café also turned to look.
Seeing Harmony's expression finally change, Jared felt a glimmer of hope. He gathered his courage and slapped himself harder.
"Harmony, I was wrong."
"Harmony, I was wrong."
He cried.
