Chapter 171 Peculiar

Jared’s eyes lit up, and he said, "Oh? Tell me more!"
One of his subordinates quickly relayed the information they had gathered. "Boss, it just so happens that Mr. Evans, the Secretary, is currently cracking down on the healthcare sector. If we create a little trouble, we can ensure their clinic can't even open, and they’ll face hefty fines."
Another subordinate chimed in. "Yes, boss. On the opening day, we can contact someone from the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct an inspection. That would certainly bring them lots of trouble."
"Excellent," Jared said, finally smiling again. His eyes narrowed as he smirked, "James, you chose the wrong person to mess with. Let’s see if you can survive this."
With that, he clenched his right hand forcefully, crushing the can of beer.
After hanging up the phone, Harmony looked at James and explained, "Jared and I are over. There's no chance of us getting back together. Don't let him deceive you."
James was taken aback and responded with a nonchalant "Oh."
Harmony bit her lip and continued. "Also, don’t block me again. It would really upset me!"
James thought to himself, 'Does it really matter to you if I block you or not?'
He increasingly felt that something was off with Harmony.
'Could it be that she was infatuated to me because I had seen her body during treatment?'
Considering this possibility, James showed a cautious look.
Time flew by, and a few days later, under Jennifer's diligent preparations, everything was ready for the opening.
Given Jennifer's personality, she had planned for a low-key opening. But Dennis disagreed. He believed his daughter was remarkable and that opening a well-invested clinic deserved a grand celebration, so he invited all their relatives to support them.
Dennis had been notifying everyone well in advance, urging them to come and support Jennifer on the big day.
The opening day, chosen by Dennis, turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day. The whole family got up early to get busy.
It was evident that Jennifer was quite nervous.
James gently held her hand and said softly, "Don't be nervous. You can do it."
Feeling the warmth of his hand, Jennifer’s body trembled slightly, and a faint blush crept up her cheeks. She instinctively wanted to pull away but decided to let him hold her hand as she saw Dennis and Kaitlyn approaching.
Although Jennifer had been a doctor for several years and had considerable clinical experience, this was her first time running her own clinic, so it was natural for her to feel a bit nervous.
James had noticed her nervousness and showed some support.
Thanks to Dennis's notifications, many relatives arrived early. They were surprised to see the clinic located in a bustling area of Lindwood City, with a large and well-decorated storefront, clearly indicating a significant investment.
"Wow, I didn't expect Jennifer to actually open a clinic. The name 'Hall of Benevolent Medicine' is quite nice. Dennis wasn't exaggerating how grand it was at all."
"Yeah, this location and decoration must have cost a fortune, maybe around a million dollars?"
"More or less."
"Investing a lot in the clinic is one thing, but the key is having great medical skills. Great medical skills are essential to keep it running! Let's hope they don't end up causing any problems for the patients!"
"True. Wasn’t Jennifer just an ordinary doctor? How did she manage to open a clinic? Young people these days are so impulsive, thinking they’re invincible after learning a few skills."
Some relatives began to chatter, their words dripping with jealousy and bitterness.
Dennis and Kaitlyn came out to greet the guests and happened to overhear these remarks, their expressions turning somewhat sour.
Seeing the couple approach, the relatives lazily offered a few congratulations before criticizing.
"Dennis, it's not that we're criticizing you, but why did your daughter decide to open a clinic? This isn't like other businesses; it requires real skill."
"Exactly, Dennis. You're not young anymore. How could you let Jennifer do whatever she wanted? Isn't this just a joke? Jennifer is only, like, twenty-six? Does she have the skills to run a clinic?"
The relatives continued, convinced that opening the clinic was Jennifer's biggest mistake.
Dennis’s face turned sour. Normally, he would have snapped back, but today was special, so he kept a forced smile. "No need to worry. Jennifer is the head of her department at Lindwood City Hospital. Her medical skills are top-notch."
At this moment, Kaitlyn's older brother, Tony, stepped forward. "Lindwood City Hospital? That's just a low-tier hospital in Lindwood City. It is famous for treating minor illnesses like colds and fevers. Who would go there for serious conditions? Jennifer might be a department head there, but in a top-tier hospital, she'd probably just be an ordinary doctor."
His tone was full of disdain, and he deliberately spoke loudly.
Previously, Tony, his daughter Kayla, and son-in-law Leonard had fought each other during a dinner at Dennis's house, leaving Tony resentful. Although Kayla and Leonard didn't divorce, their relationship was strained, and Leonard's business faced a severe crisis, leaving them in debt and struggling. So, Tony naturally hated the Johnson family.
Seeing Jennifer open a clinic in such a prime location only intensified Tony’s resentment. He seized the opportunity to mock her.
Just then, Jennifer and James emerged from the clinic and overheard the conversation. Jennifer's face immediately changed.
Jennifer had never liked this uncle. As a child, she was often looked down upon by him. Even on the joyous occasion of the clinic's opening, he was mocking her instead of congratulating her. This ignited Jennifer's anger. She stepped forward with a forced smile and said, "Uncle, don't worry. If Kayla and Leonard's syphilis flares up again, I can treat it here."
'You!' Tony's face turned livid.
Kayla and Leonard contracting syphilis was his greatest shame for Tony, a source of ridicule for a long time.
James was somewhat surprised; he hadn't expected Jennifer to say that.
