Chapter 42 Mr. Brown, I Found Dr. Smith!
Jennifer had barely taken a few steps when the plump woman and another female colleague intercepted her.
The ladies remarked sarcastically, "Dr. Johnson, weren't you waiting for your husband to arrive? Why are you leaving as soon as he's here? Do you feel embarrassed by him?"
Upon hearing these sarcastic remarks, Jennifer's expression darkened even more. Despite feeling extremely displeased, she stayed put, her face showing clear signs of displeasure.
James, unaware of the recent events, hurriedly approached Jennifer and handed her some documents. Innocently, he said, "Darling, I brought the documents for you."
Jennifer didn't reach out to take them. Instead, she glared at him with frustration. If there weren't so many people around at the airport, she wouldn't have even acknowledged James!
She had hoped that after going through those two episodes, James would turn over a new leaf and pull himself together. But in the end, he was still totally hopeless, a real piece of work that couldn't be helped!
"I asked you to drive over. How did you end up drenched like this?" Jennifer gritted her teeth, staring at James frustratedly as she spoke.
James glanced down at his mostly wet clothes and chuckled ruefully. He explained, "Dennis took the car keys, and it wasn't easy to get a cab. I saw you were in a hurry, so I rode the motorcycle over. I didn't expect it to rain on the way, soaking me. But don't worry, I put the documents in a plastic bag so they didn't get wet."
James opened the red plastic bag and handed the documents to Jennifer with a smile.
Somebody teased, "My goodness, is this Dr. Johnson's husband? He looks so shabby!"
Someone ridiculed, "He even rode a motorcycle here. Oh my, how embarrassing! And dressed so poorly. I bet his whole outfit doesn't cost more than two hundred bucks!"
Another scoffed, "Mr. Phillips said Dr. Johnson's husband couldn't find a job. I didn't believe it at first. But looking at him, I can totally see him doing manual labor!"
Someone else chimed in with a sneer, "Don't talk nonsense. He's not a laborer; he's a delivery guy. Didn't you hear he rode a motorcycle here? I heard delivering gigs is quite profitable these days."
Someone mocked, "You're right. And he used a red plastic bag to carry the documents. That's so tacky!"
Another added, "No wonder someone earlier was saying that Dr. Johnson has no discernment. This isn't just a lack of discernment, and it's like she's totally blind!"
The colleagues behind James pointed and whispered, making harsh remarks. Those female doctors who were not as attractive as Jennifer wore expressions of malicious glee.
Jennifer had stood out at the conference, drawing much attention due to her beauty, making her the center of attention. This led to resentment among the female doctors toward Jennifer.
Discovering that Jennifer's husband was such a loser brought them great joy.
Hearing these comments, Jennifer's expression grew even darker. She felt immense shame looking at the red plastic bag in James' hand, regretting ever believing that James could change!
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, repeatedly convincing herself. However, she couldn't do it. The sight of James made her furious.
"James, you've really embarrassed me!" Jennifer remarked as she gritted her teeth.
James, not oblivious to Jennifer's anger, helplessly replied, "Your call was so sudden; I rushed over before finishing my meal."
"So, you're saying it's my fault?" Jennifer retorted.
"That's not what I meant," James spoke softly.
Seeing James' dejected appearance, Jennifer felt even more exhausted. She reminded herself not to hold onto any hope for this man in the future. He was a hopeless piece of trash, utterly useless.
John, hanging out on the side, was totally cracking up, his grin just impossible to conceal. This loser sure didn't let him down.
Adjusting his suit, John approached with a charming smile. he said condescendingly, "Jennifer, I've told you before, don't hold out any hope for him. Some people are born losers and will never change."
Jennifer didn't argue, seemingly accepting his words, which only fueled John's excitement.
He continued, "Look, this is Dr. Johnson's freeloading husband, James. He's a jobless drifter, depending on Dr. Johnson for a living, always clinging to her. No, I misspoke. James is a great contractor because he's taken over all the toilets in our Lindwood City hospital. When he's short on cash, he cleans toilets. Haha."
He deliberately spoke very loudly, letting everyone around them hear his mockery. Not only did the doctors join in the ridicule, but for them, this was just too funny.
The male doctors who had a good impression of Dr. Johnson were full of hostility towards James's identity, knowing that he was an unemployed vagrant, spared no effort in their mockery.
At the same time, they were filled with indignation. Life was truly unjust. How could a man as incapable as him have married a woman as beautiful as Dr. Johnson, while they, despite their exceptional qualities, had to settle for mediocrity?
As for the female doctors, already envious of Jennifer's excellence, they reveled in the news that she had married a loser, openly displaying their malicious joy.
Not only that, but other travelers passing by the airport gathered to watch the spectacle.
In an instant, James became the center of attention, like a monkey in a circus.
At this point, James couldn't help but chuckle, looking at John and retorting, "John, even at my worst, I'm still better than a scoundrel like you. Remember, you lost to me last time and promised to kneel. It's only been a few days, did you forget already? Now is a good time, we have an audience, why not keep your word and kneel to me?"
As soon as these words were out, the others instantly turned to John with odd looks on their faces.
John's face darkened as if James had touched a nerve. He snapped back defensively, "Nonsense! When did I ever make a bet with you? Who do you think you are? You, a useless person like you, don't even have the right to look up to me! And what right do you have to speak about me? A jobless loser who has to ride a motorcycle to get around? Someone like you doesn't even deserve Jennifer."
James held nothing but contempt for John's shamelessness. Just as he was about to retort, Jennifer spoke up, "That's enough."
She stared at James, her disappointment palpable. She coldly ordered, "Go back."
Despite the pain in his heart, James forced a smile. "But didn't you ask me to come and pick you up?" he said gently.
Jennifer's anger flared up. "Pick me up? What did you use to pick me up? Just your motorcycle?" she lashed out at him.
Meanwhile, in a corner of the airport, a man stood, his face filled with excitement as he watched James. He quickly dialed a number on his phone.
The man reported over the phone, "Hello, Mr. Brown! I found Dr. Smith; yes, it's James Smith!"
