Chapter 289 From Now On, I Won't Leave Him

"So, you want me to divorce him, right?" Jennifer's face was expressionless, her tone icy.

Dennis shifted uncomfortably. James, always respectful and compliant, especially after recent events, had elevated the family's reputation; he'd ceased being the idle disappointment he once was.

"We're doing this for your own good," Dennis said, feeling a bit guilty under Jennifer's glare.

"For my own good? You think divorcing James is for my own good?" Jennifer was furious. "James is seriously injured and needs someone to take care of him. You want me to divorce him now? Do you know how much that would hurt him? Have you thought about that?"

Kaitlyn said in a low, urgent voice, "So you want to waste your whole life on him? You're only twenty-six, you have so much time ahead of you. Do you want to spend your entire life with him? You saw what happened today. James is ruined; his whole face is disfigured. No matter how advanced the medical technology, he can't be fully healed. He'll be like this for the rest of his life! And it's not just his face; his entire body is deformed from the burns. He'll never look like a normal person again! We even asked the doctor, and James might have lost his ability to have children. He's practically a cripple. Jennifer, you're still so young, are you really willing to spend your life like this?"

Kaitlyn's face was full of pain as she tried to reach for Jennifer's hand, but Jennifer rudely pushed her away.

"Don't touch me!" Jennifer's emotions were intense, her face flushed with anger. She took two steps back to keep her distance from Kaitlyn. "Whose idea was this?"

Dennis lowered his head, not daring to look Jennifer in the eye.

Kaitlyn, however, met her daughter's anger head-on. She stared straight at Jennifer. "It was Dennis and my idea together. Jennifer, you don't have to be so harsh. We're doing this for your own good. We only have one daughter in this lifetime, and your happiness is more important than our lives!"

Kaitlyn's expression softened considerably as she continued. "Jennifer, we can't deny that James is a good person. He's polite and capable, and we've been very satisfied with his performance these past few months. But such a big accident happened, and he ended up like this. We can't just watch you throw away your entire life's happiness!"

Kaitlyn's eyes were already inflamed as she spoke. She and Dennis, having only one child, Jennifer, could truthfully assert that Jennifer was their entire world, outweighing their own lives in importance. They had worked hard to raise Jennifer and really didn't want to see her happiness destroyed.

Indeed, James was a good person. Before this incident, he was the perfect son-in-law, with excellent character, personality, and ability. He treated Jennifer very well, and they were very satisfied with him.

But such a big change had happened, and a good person was burned like this.

To be honest, Kaitlyn also felt very sorry. She had always been kinder to James than most, even during those difficult five years. She had seen him as a human being, not just a burden. The sight of James in his current state evoked a profound sense of sorrow in her, eliciting an outpouring of tears. But that didn't mean she could watch Jennifer lose her lifelong happiness.

She knew what she was doing was wrong and very cruel to James, but she had no choice!

"Mom, do you even hear yourself?" Jennifer's voice was thick with tears, her eyes filled with a pain that cut Kaitlyn to the core. She had never imagined hearing such cold, heartless words from her mother. "James respects you both so much. He's always been grateful for your kindness, especially yours, Mom. He even talks about it in his sleep, how you treated him like a human being when no one else did! And this is how you repay him? He's lying in there, broken and scared, and you want me to abandon him? Have you thought about what that would do to him? He didn't ask for this! He was trying to save someone! He's a hero! People on the street that night, they were crying for him, praising him! Even here in the hospital, people have offered to pay his medical bills, strangers! They see his goodness, his selflessness! And yet we, his family, this is how we treat him? Mom, doesn't it… doesn't it hurt you, knowing what you're asking of me?"

Jennifer was very emotional, speaking in one breath, her chest heaving violently.

Kaitlyn's eyes were also red. She wasn't a cold-blooded person, but she loved Jennifer too much and didn't want Jennifer's life to be wasted. Was she wrong?

Dennis sighed heavily and said, "Jennifer, we've watched you grow up. We know your heart. We know this is difficult for you. Marriage is a sacred vow, but… James is… he might not even survive this. And even if he does… Jennifer, we're not asking you to abandon him completely. You can still be there for him, as a friend. We'll make sure he's taken care of. We'll support him financially. He won't be alone."

Jennifer felt even more disappointed after hearing this. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, then opened her eyes and said firmly, "Dad, Mom, I don't know what you're thinking. I haven't been the best wife to him. I haven't always been there for him. But I won't leave him now. Not when he needs me the most."

"Jennifer," Kaitlyn said anxiously.

Jennifer interrupted her unceremoniously, "Just give up on this idea. I will never divorce James in this lifetime. Even if he dies, I won't remarry! I didn't fulfill my duties as a wife to James before and let him down. From now on, I won't leave him!"

After saying this, she ignored Dennis and Kaitlyn and went back to the hospital room with an expressionless face.

After unleashing her emotion, Jennifer felt much lighter. The corners of her mouth lifted slightly, revealing a gentle and affectionate smile. No matter how difficult it was, she would never abandon James.
