Chapter 111: At a Loss
After helping Michael resolve the issue, James was about to head home when Harmony called out to him, "James, let me give you a ride home."
James was taken aback and replied, "That's not necessary; I can just take a cab home."
Seeing James's bewildered expression, Harmony felt a bit annoyed. She glared at him and impatiently said, "I said I'll drive you home. Since you do a big favor for our family, why are you refusing my gratitude?"
James was at a loss for words.
"What are you looking at? Get in the car already." Harmony honked the horn impatiently.
"Alright then." James had no choice but to obediently get in the car.
After their leaving, Michael left.
"Just drop me off at the store across from my neighborhood. I can walk home from there," James said, feeling a strange sense of guilt, afraid that Jennifer might find out he was with Harmony.
Harmony muttered under her breath. "Coward."
"What did you say?" James didn't catch it.
"Nothing," Harmony huffed, staring straight ahead but glancing at James out of the corner of her eye. The more she looked at James, the more handsome she thought he was.
‘Why hadn't I noticed how handsome he was before?’ She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't see the artificial lake ahead. James, startled, quickly reached over to steer the wheel, preventing an accident just in time.
Harmony finally snapped out of it, slamming on the brakes in fright.
"What were you thinking about while driving?" James scolded her.
"I..." Harmony was terrified, her heart pounding and breathing heavily, her chest heaving.
James quickly looked away, his mind involuntarily recalling the time he had seen Harmony's body. He had to admit that despite her bad temper, she had a great figure.
"Forget it. I'll just take a cab home." James sighed.
Hearing this, Harmony bit her lip. Her eyes welled up with tears, and she looked like she was about to cry.
James was puzzled. He hadn't even scolded her, so why was she crying?
"Just focus more when you're driving. You only have one life, and once it's gone, it's gone," James thought she was scared from the near-accident and patted her shoulder to comfort her.
He was exasperated with Harmony; even driving, she could zone out.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..." Harmony was on the verge of tears. She had never felt so wrong in her life.
Seeing her apologize, James's anger dissipated. He wasn't a petty person and said, "It's okay, just be more careful when you drive."
Harmony also found it strange. 'Why did I get so engrossed in watching James? That's something I've never done before.’
James didn't continue riding with Harmony. He hailed a cab by the roadside and went home.
That day, Michael followed James's instructions and found a 66-year-old man with a large family. He found a good spot, buried the skeletons altogether, and built a grave.
After doing all this, he still felt uneasy. The next day, he personally came to oversee the work, anxious and on edge.
By the end of the day, nothing unusual happened. In fact, the construction team's efficiency was ten percent higher than usual, which relieved Michael and made him even more grateful to James. If James hadn't helped him, he would have suffered significant losses.
Meanwhile, after Orlando went home, he fell that very day, rolling down the stairs and breaking his leg. At the hospital, while receiving oxygen, he encountered a malfunctioning oxygen tank and nearly suffocated.
After finally getting to sleep at night, he had several consecutive nightmares that woke him up in fright.
After a series of unfortunate events, he began to feel scared and deeply regretted his former behavior. If he had known it would come to this, he would never have taken Michael's offer.
However, he still didn't believe James's words. He thought his streak of bad luck was simply because his financial luck had been cut off.
It wasn't until he encountered more misfortunes, including two near-death experiences, that he finally started to believe James.
But by then, it was too late.
Three days passed, and the weather began to cool.
During these three days, James lived comfortably. He read, practiced martial arts, picked up and dropped off Jennifer from work, and waited for a call from his family.
But he never received the call. The seal on him was almost 80% lifted.
If his family didn't come to get him soon, he would completely break the seal.
He tried sending messages to his family again, but the only reply he got was a single word: "Wait."
As James was about to leave to pick up Jennifer, a grand medical conference was being held at Lindwood City Hospital, attended by highly respected and skilled chief physicians.
"Mr. Edwards's case is special. His strange illness must be cured," Dominic Collins said in a serious tone during his speech.
One of the chief physicians said, "Director, it's not that we don't want to treat him, but his illness is too unique. We've never seen anything like it."
Another chief physician added, "Yes, Director, I've done all the tests I could, but we can't find the cause of his illness. Even if we want to treat him, we don't know where to start."
Other chief physicians echoed the sentiment, expressing their lack of confidence and reluctance to take on the case.
Dominic frowned. Brandon Edwards was a noble from Emerald Isle City, and if he could establish a connection with Brandon, his future would be a delight. So when he learned that Brandon had a strange illness that many top hospital doctors couldn't solve, he took on the case himself.
For him, curing Brandon was a must, no matter what it took.
His gaze fell on Jennifer.
All signs indicated that Brandon's illness might be a skin condition, and Jennifer was the deputy chief of dermatology, known for her excellent medical skills. Over the years, she had cured many patients at Lindwood City Hospital.
"Dr. Johnson, do you have any ideas?" he asked directly.
"My thoughts are the same as the other chief physicians. I have never seen a case like Mr. Edwards's and cannot treat it," Jennifer said flatly.
Unlike the other chief physicians, she didn't stand up and remained indifferent.
The last time Jonathon tried to assault her, Dominic was his accomplice. If James hadn't shown up in time, she would have been violated by Jonathon. So, she had no goodwill towards Dominic.
"Doesn't anyone here have any ideas?" Dominic was getting frustrated.
At that moment, a confident voice rang out.
"Director, I do have some insights." A handsome male doctor stood up, his face full of confidence.
This doctor was Eugene.
