Chapter 383 James Wants to Become an Honorary Professor?
Jovan's face twisted in confusion. When Theodore told him that James had been chilling in a backwater like Lindwood City for the past five years, Jovan was floored.
He knew James all too well. Back in the day, in the City of Mysteries, James was a total badass—cocky, rebellious, and always looking for a fight. He had this knack for making the rich kids cry.
A bunch of these rich families even teamed up to take him down, but they couldn't touch him all beCause James was like a god, who was smarter, stronger, and sharper than anyone else around.
The most epic story was when they set a trap for him, thinking they'd finally get their revenge. But James walked in solo and wiped the floor with them. After that, everyone knew better than to mess with him. He was untouchable. And with the Smith Family backing him, no one dared to try anything funny.
So, when James vanished five years ago, it was like a bomb went off. People thought he was dead. The rich kids were throwing secret parties to celebrate their nightmare was over.
The Smith Family kept quiet, no statements, no funeral. Alistair, the big shot from the Smith Family, was laying low, looking all gloomy, which made everyone think James was really gone.
Even Jovan bought into it. He was more bummed than shocked. He knew James and Emberlyn were tight since they were kids. If James was really gone, Emberlyn would be a mess, which would drive him crazy.
But then, Emberlyn came back with a beam on her face. Jovan smelled something fishy. After some digging, he found out James wasn't dead. In fact, he was playing house as a son-in-law in some no-name family in Lindwood City, which was quite shocking news to Jovan.
Given James's rep and the Smith Family's clout, it was nuts to think he'd end up in some small-time family.
There was truly a slightest instant when he had thought that it was true. However, He'd met Alistair once and knew the guy was sharp, running the Smith Family like a boss. No way someone like Alistair would lose his marbles.
For Alistair to make James disappear for five years and play the son-in-law game, there had to be a bigger plan. Alistair wasn't the type to do something pointless. No way.
But he couldn't quite wrap his head around why Alistair was pulling these strings.
"So, are you really gonna ditch the idea of Emberlyn and Walter tying the knot?" Theodore pressed.
Jovan nodded, "Emberlyn's not into Walter. Forcing it won't make her happy. Plus, now that we know James is still kicking, and given how tight he and Emberlyn are, it's better to let them figure it out themselves."
Theodore sighed, "Too bad James only sees Emberlyn as a sister. No matter how hard she tries, he just doesn't love her in that way."
"Don't sweat it. When the time's right, James will come around," Jovan said with a sly grin.
"Mr. Jackson, word is James and his so-called wife, Jennifer, are pretty close. Should I dig into that?" Theodore suggested. But Jovan shot it down, "No need. James is sharp. If we snoop around, he'll catch on and get pissed. We can't risk that."
Then he chuckled, "Actually, we don't need to worry about his current wife. James is set to take over as the golden boy of the Smith Family. Alistair would never let him marry some ordinary chick. This Jennifer isn't worth our concern."
"Good point. Your insight is always spot on; I really admire that," Theodore said, nodding in agreement.
Meanwhile, James, after saying goodbye to Emberlyn, was heading back home when his phone buzzed. It was Edwin. "Hey, Edwin, what's up?"
"Can't I just call to chat?" Edwin's cheerful voice came through.
James laughed, "Of course you can."
After some small talk, Edwin got serious, "Mr. Smith, you don't have a job right now, do you?"
James felt a bit awkward. Was Edwin gonna roast him for unemployment?
"Sort of," James admitted, scratching his nose.
"Perfect! I've got a job for you," Edwin said animatedly.
James raised an eyebrow, "What kind of job?"
"Well, a few days ago, the medical university here asked me to be an honorary professor, to teach a few classes and share some medical knowledge. They've been asking for years, but I always said no. Recently, they came back, saying they're losing medical professors fast. If it keeps up, the medical program might get axed. That's a big deal. No students, no future doctors. I thought about it and realized you, Mr. Smith, don't have a job yet and would be perfect for this. You could really help out," Edwin explained, full of hope.
James found it pretty wild. He didn't even have a medical license, and now he was being asked to teach at a med school? It just didn't seem right.
Plus, with his personality, playing professor seemed a bit out of character.
