Chapter 530 A Call from the City of Mysteries
With Clio's explanation, James's face finally looked a bit better, a glint of sharpness flashing in his eyes as he said, "The Percy family and the Lewis family have joined forces? Now that's interesting."
Clio couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, the blush on her face still not fading as she said, "Yeah, early this morning, the Percy family sent subordinates to Starlight State to meet with the Lewis family. You killed Lester in the City of Mysteries and Brent in Starlight State. The Percy family and the Lewis family have joined forces to seek revenge on you."
James's lips curled into a disdainful smile as he said, "So what if they join forces? It's an exercise in futility."
At that moment, James's face exuded immense dominance, a genuine contempt from the heart, merely stating a fact rather than being arrogant.
At least, that was what Clio's four subordinates thought.
"Mr. Smith, you may not fear the two families joining forces, but your wife's family are ordinary people. It would be hard for you to ensure their safety, wouldn't it?" Clio said.
James fell silent. He admitted Clio was right; this was indeed a concern for him. Having left the Smith family, he was now alone. No matter how capable he was, it was difficult to cover all bases.
Seeing James's silence, Clio felt a surge of joy and continued, "Mr. Smith, so you need to come with us to the National Security Agency. We at the National Security Agency mean you no harm."
She looked at James expectantly after speaking.
James thought for a moment and then said, "If you want me to go to Starlight State, forget it. In Lindwood City, I can meet."
Clio looked troubled. Her headquarters were in Starlight State, and her orders were to bring James back there.
From her expression, James immediately understood and lazily said, "Since you have no sincerity, let's drop it."
"Mr. Smith, hold on!" Clio hurriedly called out as she saw James about to leave. "I'll call my superior for instructions."
James nodded in agreement.
Clio stepped aside to make a call. After about two minutes, she returned and said, "Mr. Smith, I have spoken with my superior. He will come to Lindwood City tonight specifically to meet with you."
James nodded and said, "Alright, see you tonight then."
Clio was about to speak when she suddenly realized James had disappeared, as if he had vanished into thin air.
She was stunned and then realized she hadn't gotten James's contact information.
Clio exclaimed, "Oh no, I forgot to get James's contact information," Clio said in frustration. "Why didn't any of you remind me?"
One of her subordinates pointed to the pocket on Clio's chest and said, "Clio, it looks like James left you his contact information."
Clio was taken aback and then looked down at her chest pocket. There was a small piece of note, obviously left by James without her noticing.
She took it out and saw a string of numbers, clearly James's number.
James's handwriting was so elegant that Clio was momentarily dazed.
All along, she had been a top presence among her peers, especially in front of men, always maintaining a sense of superiority. Over time, she had developed an extremely proud personality, often indifferent to the men around her.
It wasn't that she lacked suitors; on the contrary, she had never been short of them. But none had ever moved her.
Until today, James's appearance had completely crushed her pride. First, James was her peer, more distinguished than her, more skilled in martial arts, and even smarter. Most importantly, James didn't try to hit on her like other men; instead, he was dismissive of her.
This stark contrast made her remember James deeply, not out of admiration, but out of a strong sense of defiance.
Meanwhile, James returned to the clinic as if nothing had happened.
In the evening, after dinner, James received a call from Clio, informing him that the National Security Agency's senior officials had arrived and asking if he was available to come over. Her tone was extremely polite, even asking if they needed to pick him up, which James declined. After getting the address, James went there himself.
After James left, Kaitlyn said with some confusion, "Why is James going out again tonight? He rarely goes out in the evenings."
Dennis said nonchalantly, "James is a man of status now. Naturally, he has more social engagements. What's so strange about that?"
“While that may be true, have you ever heard the saying that men can easily go astray when they come into money? Of course, it's not that I don't trust James, but now that he's wealthy, the temptations he faces have increased,” Kaitlyn said, her concern undisguised.
Jennifer rolled her eyes and said, "Mom! What are you talking about? We've been with James for almost six years now. Don't you know what kind of person he is? He's as honest as they come. Besides, even if you don't trust James, you should trust your daughter."
Kaitlyn still looked worried and said, "Jennifer, I trust James's character, but when men get money, the temptations they face are beyond your imagination. Good men are rare these days. Someone as well-mannered and capable as James is highly sought after. Don't you agree, Dennis?"
Kaitlyn lightly kicked Dennis.
As this thought crossed Dennis's mind, he furrowed his brow and exchanged a glance with Kaitlyn, both seeing the unease in each other's eyes. Shaking his head, he then said, “No, it can't be. James is a very honest kid; he wouldn't have an affair.”
With Dennis' words, Jennifer felt a pang of worry but quickly shook her head, dismissing the possibility.
Now that she knew James's true identity, she thought, if James had really wanted to have an affair, he would have done so long ago; he wouldn't have waited until now.
Besides, after everything she and James had been through, she completely trusted his character. She had even tacitly accepted Harmony's presence and encouraged James to accept Harmony, but he had refused without hesitation.
Harmony was the daughter of the Brown family and was stunningly beautiful. Any other man would have been tempted, but James wasn't moved at all.
So Jennifer didn't believe James would cheat.
"Dad, Mom, stop overthinking. I guarantee James would never do such things," Jennifer said, rolling her eyes.
Kaitlyn was about to say something when Jennifer's phone suddenly rang. She looked at it and saw it was a number from the City of Mysteries, which puzzled her since she didn't have any friends there.
