Chapter 106: Hidden Motives

Just as Jennifer was about to speak, a doctor in a white coat walked over and invited her. "Dr. Johnson, there you are. I've been looking for you for a while," he said.
"Dr. Baker, what do you need?" Jennifer asked, puzzled.
"Oh, it's like this. The director has assigned us the task of curing Mr. Brandon, and I have some ideas I'd like to discuss with you," Eugene Baker said with a smile. "I happen to know a new restaurant nearby that has great food. How about we discuss it over dinner?"
"No, I'm not interested in that restaurant." Jennifer declined politely. After speaking, she glanced at James to see his reaction.
Eugene noticed her glance and then looked at James as if he had just noticed him. "Dr. Johnson, who is this?"
Jennifer said, "His name is James, and he is my husband."
Upon hearing this, Eugene's mouth twitched, his expression becoming very unnatural. He exclaimed, "You're married?"
"Yes," Jennifer said, linking her arm with James's. "My husband is here to pick me up from work, so I won't be joining you for dinner. We can discuss your ideas at work tomorrow."
"Oh, okay," Eugene said with a forced smile, giving James a deep, jealous look. But he hid it well, and the jealousy quickly disappeared, unnoticed by Jennifer.
After James and Jennifer left, Eugene confirmed with a young nurse that Jennifer was indeed married. He felt unfair since he had no chance to pursue Jennifer, which made him extremely uncomfortable.
His name was Eugene Baker, a graduate of Southern Medical University. After graduation, he went abroad for further studies and published articles in prestigious medical journals, gaining considerable fame in the medical field.
As a top-tier doctor, he received excellent offers from various hospitals. Upon returning to the country, many hospitals, especially large private ones, offered him lucrative positions.
But he declined all these offers. When everyone thought he would join a major hospital, he made a shocking decision: he chose Lindwood City Hospital, a small, obscure private hospital.
No one understood why he made this choice.
Only he knew that he chose Lindwood City Hospital for one person.
Jennifer, the woman he had once secretly loved.
The first time he saw Jennifer, he fell deeply in love with her. But at that time, Jennifer was too dazzling; she was the campus queen of the medical university, and he was just an ordinary junior among many admirers.
On Jennifer's birthday, he mustered the courage to give her flowers and confess his love, but she rejected him without hesitation. At that moment, he heard the sound of his heartbreaking and could never forget Jennifer's cold and disdainful attitude.
From that day on, he worked hard, rising from the bottom of the class to the top ten in his grade.
After graduation, to present himself in a new light to Jennifer, he chose to study abroad, vowing to become the best young doctor and make Jennifer regret her rejection.
During his time abroad, he even underwent plastic surgery. Multiple surgeries transformed him into a handsome man from plain-looking; no one would recognize him.
Of course, during his years abroad, he wasn't always single. His excellent medical skills and handsome face won over many beautiful women, and he had several relationships. But he always thought of Jennifer, and this thought only deepened over time. Gradually, it became an obsession, and he vowed to win Jennifer's heart.
He was absolutely confident in himself. As long as he made his move consistently, winning over Jennifer wouldn't take much effort.
He had already planned it out: once he won Jennifer over, he would reveal his true identity to her. He wanted to see the look of surprise on her face at that moment, then insulted her badly.
But he never expected that she was already married!
And she had been married for five years, completely shattering his plans.
For a moment, he was lost and felt extremely distressed.
Clenching his fists so tightly that his teeth almost cracked, he was filled with unwillingness.
Taking a couple of deep breaths, he forced himself to calm down and asked a nurse, "Really? What does Dr. Johnson's husband do for a living?"
The nurse scoffed, "You just came to Lindwood City, so you don't know. Dr. Johnson's husband doesn't have a job. He's a good-for-nothing who has been living off Dr. Johnson for years. Many people in our hospital look down on him."
"What? Is that true?" Eugene was immediately surprised. "How could such an outstanding woman like Dr. Johnson marry a good-for-nothing?"
The nurse looked around to make sure no one was paying attention, then said to Eugene, "Dr. Johnson was forced to marry James..."
She then let her imagination run wild, painting James as a complete loser and claiming that Jennifer married him due to her parents' orders. She even crafted an entire drama.
After hearing this, Eugene began to feel a glimmer of hope.
Since Jennifer's husband was a good-for-nothing, he still had a chance.
Even if he couldn't win Jennifer's heart, he could still win her over physically.
Over the years, Eugene had fantasized about Jennifer countless times. If he could truly have her even once, he would have no regrets in life.
Meanwhile, after they left, Jennifer said to James, "Why didn't you ask about that male doctor?"
James held an umbrella for her and said plainly, "I trust you."
Hearing this, Jennifer's lips curved into a faint smile, and her previously troubled mood disappeared.
"By the way, you haven't told me what strange illness that patient has," James asked.
Jennifer said, "I can't say for sure. The patient has some very strange growths on his body that look like tree bark. We've tested several times but haven't identified the cause. The patient also says that every time it rains, his body becomes extremely stiff, and he can't move at all."
After hearing Jennifer's explanation, James had a rough idea of the situation. He asked, "What is your treatment plan?"
Jennifer shook her head. "We haven't come up with a specific treatment plan yet. None of the doctors in our department have seen this kind of illness before. But Dr. Baker mentioned that he has seen this disease abroad and might have a way to treat it."
"Is Dr. Baker very skilled?" James asked curiously.
"Yes. He also graduated from Southern Medical University. After graduation, he went abroad to further his studies and published many insightful articles in foreign medical journals. He's a very capable doctor," Jennifer said. "Logically, a famous doctor like him should choose to work at a top-tier hospital, but he chose to come here. It's very strange."
"Maybe he has some hidden motives." James laughed.
Jennifer knew exactly what he meant and rolled her eyes at him. "Stop talking nonsense. Dr. Baker is a very upright person, and besides, I didn't even know him before."
