Chapter 302 Fighting Violence with Violence

"Wait, what?! Fifty grand?!" The middle-aged couple's faces went pale, totally floored.

The crowd around them was just as shocked. Some felt bad for the couple, but most were just enjoying the drama. No one had the guts to step in; they all kept their distance, too scared to even call the cops.

"Yeah, you heard me, fifty thousand bucks. And don't even think about leaving without coughing up every cent!" Maximilian sneered, jabbing a finger in Leopold's face.

Eirian couldn't take it anymore and yelled, "This is a shakedown! You're setting us up and then blaming us! You think you can just ignore the law? I'm calling the cops right now!"

But as soon as she pulled out her phone, Maximilian snatched it and smashed it on the ground. "Oops, my bad. Guess you can't call the cops now."

Eirian was fuming but too scared to do anything. She was just a regular housewife, always played by the rules, and had never been in a mess like this. She was terrified.

Maximilian spotted someone trying to sneak a video with their phone. He stormed over, grabbed the person, and barked, "What do you think you're doing? You wanna get hurt?"

Those who were trying to secretly film quickly hid their phones, too scared to stick around, worried they'd get dragged into the mess.

Most people were still scared stiff of these thugs.

Seeing the crowd was too scared to step in, the thugs looked even more smug. They strutted around, looking like they owned the place.

Maximilian got up in Leopold's face, grabbed his collar, and snarled, "Last chance, buddy. Pay up, or we trash your car!"

Behind him, a few thugs with cigarettes dangling from their lips and iron rods in their hands tapped menacingly on the car hood.

Leopold, shaking in Maximilian's grip, was terrified and barely holding it together. He was naturally a scaredy-cat, and in this situation, he was so freaked out he couldn't think straight, his lips quivering. "Fifty grand is too much. Bartholomew doesn't look that hurt. How about I give you twenty grand?"

"Twenty grand? You think this is a joke?" Maximilian's face twisted in anger, and he raised his hand to slap Leopold.

This wasn't the first time these guys had pulled this stunt. In the past six months, they'd pulled off five successful shakedowns.

They didn't just pick random targets; they were organized and had been watching this middle-aged couple for weeks. They knew the couple was easy to scare, making their intimidation tactics almost foolproof.

Leopold, staring down Maximilian's raised hand, was scared out of his mind but also felt humiliated. Getting pushed around by a bunch of twenty-something thugs was beyond frustrating!

At that moment, Leopold's eyes welled up, tears on the brink of falling.

Just as Maximilian's slap was about to connect, a hand shot out from the side and grabbed his wrist with precision.

It was James. He'd just shown up and couldn't stand by while Maximilian was about to hit someone.

Even though he wasn't back to his peak form, James still had enough strength to handle someone like Maximilian with ease.

His sudden appearance caught everyone off guard. They thought Leopold was a goner, but out of nowhere, someone had stopped Maximilian's hand.

Maximilian was stunned. It felt like his wrist was caught in a vice, completely immobile. His face twisted in shock. "Who the hell are you? Are you looking for trouble?"

The middle-aged couple was just as shocked, staring wide-eyed at the mysterious man who had appeared out of nowhere.

James was covered head to toe, only his neck showing, adding to his mysterious vibe.

"How dare you shake down decent folks?" James's voice was icy. "Say you're sorry. Now."

Maximilian's face turned red with rage. "You piece of crap!"

He tried to yank his hand free but couldn't budge. His expression changed again; James's grip was like iron. Among his crew, Maximilian was known for his strength, even stronger than some bodybuilders, but against James, he was helpless! Totally outmatched!

Seeing Maximilian still mouthing off, James tightened his grip. Maximilian howled in pain, his face contorting.

"It hurts!" Maximilian's body shook as James lifted his hand higher. Since James was taller, this forced Maximilian onto his tiptoes, making him look ridiculous.

"Say you're sorry. Now." James's voice was cold as ice.

Maximilian, stubborn as ever, refused to apologize and kicked at James's thigh.

James yanked his wrist down, pressing it against his shoulder with force. Maximilian lost his balance, and before his kick could land, he crashed to his knees with a thud, screaming in pain.

The crowd was stunned. They hadn't expected anyone to step in, let alone someone who could take down the arrogant Maximilian so easily!

The middle-aged couple was especially shocked, frozen in place.

"Why the hell are you all just standing there? Get over here and help!" Maximilian screamed, tears streaming down his face from the pain.

Hearing their boss, the thugs with iron rods charged at James. They were aggressive and moved fast, clearly seasoned fighters.

The onlookers, seeing this, were worried for James, thinking he was in deep trouble.
