Chapter 124: My Word is Law
Dennis and Kaitlyn were relieved when they saw Jennifer and James arrive; they thought they were saved.
"Jennifer, finally, you're here! Call the police quickly and get these jerks locked up!" they yelled.
Seeing the slap mark on Dennis's face, Jennifer became even more furious.
For a long time, Dennis and Kaitlyn had obeyed the law and maintained good relationships with their friends. This was the first time they had been bullied like this.
"Dad, who hit you?" Jennifer gritted her teeth.
"It was that bastard Steven! Jennifer, call the cops on him!" Dennis said.
At this moment, everyone's eyes were on Jennifer, and they were all stunned by her stunning beauty.
Many men eyed Jennifer lustfully from head to toe.
For them, it was the first time they had seen such a beautiful and elegant woman.
"So, you're Dennis's daughter. Perfect timing. Dennis sold a pack of fake tea products, and my nephew got sick from drinking it! You better pay up, or we will smash this store!" Steven arrogantly pointed at Jennifer; his attitude was extremely arrogant.
"You're spouting lies!" Dennis shouted. "I only sell genuine tea. You're just jealous that my business is better than yours, so you're using these despicable means to frame me!"
"Alright, you scoundrel, you dare to slander me? Do you really think I can't do anything to you? I'll smash your store right now." Steven waved his hand, and a group of people behind him rushed forward, ready to act.
Jennifer took out her phone and started recording. "Go ahead. I want to see who dares to smash anything! This is causing trouble, and you'll all end up in jail."
Then she said to Dennis, "Dad, call the police immediately and let them handle this."
However, Steven was not afraid at all and even laughed. "I'm so scared. Go ahead and call the police. Let me remind you that my brother-in-law is the deputy chief of the police department. Calling the police won't help you!"
Jennifer's face immediately changed as she heard this, and Dennis and Kaitlyn were even more frightened. No wonder Steven was so arrogant; he had someone backing him up.
"What, weren't you all clamoring to call the police? Why don't you dare now?" Steven's expression was extremely smug and infuriating. "Since you don't dare to call the police, it's my turn."
He took out his phone and dialed. "Brother-in-law, it's me. Are you free now? Come to my store; someone is selling fake tea products, which harmed a lot of people!"
After hanging up, Steven said smugly, "My brother-in-law will be here soon. You guys are done for."
Jennifer bit her lip, feeling a sense of helplessness, and Dennis and Kaitlyn were even more desperate.
"James, call Michael and see if he can help," Jennifer said through gritted teeth.
"Okay." James nodded and called Michael, but just like last time, Michael's phone couldn't be reached.
This was awkward. Jennifer angrily said, "Still can't get through? It was like this last time! He must have blocked you!"
Jennifer shot a fierce glare at James. She took out her phone and started calling her classmate Gary Reed. "Gary, this is Jennifer. I need a favor. My dad is in some trouble."
However, before she could finish, Gary interrupted her, "It's not that I don't want to help you, but your dad has offended our Deputy Chief Wade Murphy. I can't help you. If there's nothing else, I'll hang up now."
Jennifer's last hope was shattered as she listened to these words.
Before long, three police cars arrived, followed by a white van and a dozen people.
Steven was immediately overjoyed and said smugly to Dennis, "See, my brother-in-law brought people over. Dennis, you are facing big trouble!"
"You bastard!" Dennis's face turned extremely grim.
Kaitlyn felt frightened and said, "Dennis, maybe we should just give in and pay him the twenty thousand."
James immediately shook his head. "We can't give in. People like Steven would not be satisfied by the money now; he would shut our store down."
Dennis, already furious, exploded upon hearing James's words. "You useless. What can you do now?"
James felt utterly embarrassed by the scolding. Dennis's temper was as bad as ever.
Steven mocked. "I remember now. You're the famous son-in-law of The Johnson Family, right? I heard you're a loser who can't even find a job. How dare such a waste like you to meddle my business?"
Others joined in the mockery, and for a moment, James became a laughingstock.
James showed no signs of anger. He calmly looked at Steven and the others, not taking their taunts to heart. He was puzzled as to why Brandon hadn't sent anyone to find him yet.
Wade led a few police officers over and said sternly, "Steven, is this the scammer selling fake tea products that you mentioned on the phone?"
"Yes! Arrest him now!" Steven shouted. Wade immediately put on a righteous facade and said, "We absolutely cannot allow such a store to exist. I'm going to arrest this scammer!"
He then instructed the people from the Commerce Bureau to shut down Dennis's store.
They didn't give Dennis a chance to explain and were about to rush in and smash things.
At this moment, a tall figure stepped forward and blocked their way. "Stop right there!"
It was James, with a stern face. "Our store has a legitimate business license and has never sold any fake tea products. Steven is slandering us. Besides, you haven't investigated properly. What rights do you have to shut down our store?"
Hearing James's words, Wade laughed arrogantly. "I'll tell you what rights I have! I'm the deputy chief of the Lindwood City Police Department and good friends with Marlon Perry, the head of the Commerce Bureau! If you dare to resist, I'll throw you in jail too!"
"You're disregarding the law!" James said angrily.
"The law? Let me tell you something. In Lindwood City, my word is the law!" Wade said domineeringly, waving his hand. "Shut down the store!"
However, at that moment, an angry voice rang out. "You're just a deputy chief, and you dare to be so arrogant!"
