Chapter 113 The Surgery Begins
Immediately, a director laughed and said, "Mr. Watson, he's not a doctor at all, just a good-for-nothing loafer."
This director was none other than Jenkins, who had been drinking with Jonathon last time. He had always harbored a grudge against James, and the last incident, which James had ruined, fueled his resentment. Now that he had the chance, he couldn't wait to mock James.
Dominic also held a grudge against James. After the last incident failed, Jonathon's prostate organ deteriorated, and he always suspected it was James's doing, causing him to lose Jonathon as a backer.
"James, out of respect for Dr. Johnson, I've tolerated your presence in the hospital. Don't shamelessly interfere with the hospital's work," Dominic said.
Others also voiced their dissatisfaction with James.
In an instant, James became the target of everyone's criticism.
Eugene watched this scen with a slight smirk, very pleased.
James had long since learned to ignore these people's mockery. He discerned Herman's different status among the crowd, walked to him, and said, "I've encountered this kind of illness before and can confidently say that it's not damage to the nerve cells but a disruption of the immune system. It's coincidentally infected by a very rare virus, leading to changes in body functions and constantly growing necrotic tissue like tree bark. If you use Dr. Baker's method to treat it, not only will it not cure the patient, but it will also worsen the patient's condition, making things worse."
"Enough!" Eugene's face turned very ugly as he stood up and scolded, "You arrogant trash, what qualifications do you have to question me? I graduated from Southern Medical University. I'm a Ph.D. student at Simbara University, and I've published no less than ten papers. Even the top professors in the country wouldn't dare to question me. Who do you think you are to question me?"
His string of titles was indeed intimidating, making many people around him look at him differently, especially the young nurses, who were very impressed. To them, someone like Eugene was the protagonist in a movie. He was handsome, academically excellent, highly skilled in medicine, and willing to give up offers from renowned hospitals to come to a place like Lindwood City Hospital. They couldn't help but fantasize—could he be here because of them?
Herman was also quite surprised after hearing this. He didn't know Eugene was so outstanding and couldn't help but have more confidence in him. As for James, he didn't give him a second glance.
James observed everyone's reactions but felt no emotional waves. He had said what he needed to say, showing his kindness. Since the patient's family didn't believe him, he didn't want to say more.
Seeing him remain silent, everyone thought he was embarrassed and despised him even more.
Jennifer couldn't stand it anymore. She pulled James away and, once outside, angrily said, "Can't you stop causing trouble for me? Eugene is a Ph.D. student who studied abroad at Simbara University. What do you have to question him? Just because you've read a couple of books?"
James said, "He's wrong. If he really follows his plan to treat the patient tomorrow, there will definitely be trouble. I can tell the patient's identity is not simple. By then, the entire Lindwood City Hospital might be in trouble."
"Stop talking!" Jennifer was even angrier. Originally, she had developed a better impression of James, thinking he had changed and matured compared to before. But now, it seemed he was still the same, arrogant and without any real skills, making baseless claims, which was very off-putting.
"James, do you think that just because you accidentally cured a little boy's illness last time, you really know medicine?" Jennifer said unceremoniously, "Do you know how serious Mr. Edwards's illness is this time? If not handled properly, it could be fatal. And Mr. Edwards is a powerful figure from Emerald Isle City. If you offend him, not even Michaels could protect you."
Jennifer was visibly agitated, glaring at James, her breathing rapid, her chest heaving.
Seeing her so furious, James didn't get angry. On the contrary, he felt a warmth in his heart. After five years together, he knew Jennifer's personality well. She was always indifferent to people or things she didn't care about. The fact that Jennifer was so upset and scolding him meant she cared about him.
"I'm sorry. I was wrong," James said gently.
Seeing him admit his mistake, Jennifer's agitation subsided a bit. "It's impressive that you admit your mistake. In the future, when you encounter such issues, don't speak recklessly, understand?"
James was silent for a moment and then said, "I still stand by my opinion. Eugene's approach is wrong."
"You!" Jennifer was infuriated. "So, according to you, you have the ability to cure it?"
James nodded solemnly. "Yes."
Jennifer didn't believe him and stopped paying attention to him. She felt that James was still the same old James she knew. The goodwill she had developed towards him quickly dissipated.
On the way back, she couldn't be bothered to talk to James anymore.
James could only smile bitterly, realizing that Jennifer still held a grudge against him.
Jennifer was waiting for James to apologize, but he remained indifferent, still acting as if he wasn't wrong, which infuriated her. She had initially planned to invite James to bed, but in her anger, she decided against it.
In truth, she wasn't angry because James embarrassed her. It was because, after everything that had happened recently, she thought James had changed, if not becoming excellent, at least more mature and steady. However, he hadn't changed and was still stubbornly unrepentant, which was what angered her the most.
Three days later, the medication Eugene needed was airlifted from Simbara, and he was ready to perform surgery on Brandon.
This surgery was extremely important. To ensure its absolute success, Herman even spent money to temporarily equip the operating room with the most advanced surgical equipment.
Eugene was the lead surgeon for this operation. He suppressed his excitement, scrubbed in, and entered the operating room.
Jennifer was Eugene's assistant, along with two other assistant doctors.
Brandon was a very dignified old man, clearly a military veteran. He exuded a stern, iron-blooded aura, and there was a faint air of seriousness.
Seeing Eugene a bit nervous, Brandon smiled and said, "Young man, you don't need to be nervous. I've lived long enough. If the surgery fails, it's just my fate."
Jennifer saw Brandon's nonchalant attitude and the lack of fear of death in his eyes, and she couldn't help but feel a deep respect for him.
Hearing this, Eugene relaxed a bit.
His medical achievements were indeed high, but he tended to get nervous. He always became more nervous when facing the more important surgery.
This surgery was, for him, the most important one to date, with no room for failure. Even before the surgery started, fine beads of sweat had already appeared on his forehead.
Seeing him like this, Jennifer frowned slightly and said, "Dr. Baker, are you okay?"
Eugene caught a whiff of Jennifer's fragrance, and a hint of intoxication flashed in his eyes. His nervousness eased a bit. He shook his head and deliberately put on a relaxed smile, saying, "I'm fine. Let's begin."
Over the past two days, he had rehearsed this surgery in his mind more than a hundred times. As long as he performed normally and used the medication sent from Simbara, he was confident he could cure Brandon.
After a series of preparations, Eugene administered anesthesia to Brandon, and the surgery officially began.
