Chapter 537 Love and Selfishness
With Jennifer's words, Lisa wasn't angry; she smiled faintly, "James comes from the Smith family of City of Mysteries. The Smith family is one of the three major families in City of Mysteries. Before James came to Serenity State, he was the most outstanding, flamboyant, and talked-about genius in the entire City of Mysteries. Everyone paled in comparison to him. He was the epitome of manliness—arrogant, domineering, and invincible. Many people disliked him, but many also idolized him. At that time, the Smith family was the largest family in City of Mysteries, wielding immense power."
Jennifer had already heard this from James, but her feelings now were different from back then. James had spoken so plainly, as if recounting someone else's history. It hadn't moved Jennifer much, nor had she deeply considered the nobility of James's identity or the distance between them.
It wasn't until now, hearing it from Lisa, that she realized just how illustrious James had been.
Lisa continued, "Five years ago, James suddenly disappeared, causing a huge stir in City of Mysteries. Everyone thought he was dead. After his disappearance, the Smith family gradually declined, falling from the top family to the third, and it continues to be consumed. Given time, the Smith family will fall out of the top three families and may even be devoured. As the daughter of the Savoy family, I was betrothed to James early on. Our marriage would allow James to return to City of Mysteries and take his place as heir, ensuring the Smith family's continued prosperity."
Jennifer fell silent after hearing this.
She was unaware of these subsequent developments, which now rendered her emotions even more complicated.
In fact, she had considered that, given her status, she wasn't a match for James. After that fire, James had been avoiding her, mainly for this reason. But she had always been unwilling to think about it, unwilling to shatter this beautiful dream.
Now, with Lisa's appearance, she had no choice but to face the reality.
"You want me to leave James voluntarily, right, Ms. Savoy?" Jennifer looked up and said to Lisa.
Jennifer had already guessed Lisa's purpose when she came.
However, Lisa shook her head and said, "Not necessarily. You just need to divorce James."
Jennifer frowned, "Ms. Savoy, I don't latch on to what you mean."
Lisa smiled, "A man like James, I never expect him to have only one woman for his entire life. That's unrealistic. My marriage to him is a political alliance; legally, I must be his first wife. But you, Ms. Johnson, I don't mind if you have any private relationship with James."
Jennifer was stunned, her mouth slightly open, staring at Lisa in disbelief.
After a while, she sneered, "Ms. Savoy, do you find this amusing? Are you testing me? Or mocking me?"
"No exactly." Lisa shook her head and said, "Ms. Johnson, you've misunderstood. I'm not joking. Do you really think a man as exceptional as James would only have you as his woman for his entire life?"
Jennifer stared intently at Lisa, who met her gaze honestly, her eyes clear, indicating she wasn't lying.
This made Jennifer find it even more unbelievable. It was impossible that a woman be willing for her man to have relationships outside of their own.
But from Lisa's demeanor, she wasn't lying; she truly believed this.
However, she soon let out a bitter smile, as if she agreed with the sentiment herself. After all, she had once actively played matchmaker for James and Harmony.
Jennifer was self-mocking.
Seeing Jennifer silent and deep in thought, Lisa didn't rush her and calmly watched her.
After a while, Jennifer looked up and said, "Ms. Savoy, I admit you're beautiful, the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. But James is my husband, my everything. I won't give him up to you. If you have the ability, go ahead and take James from me."
After a pause, Jennifer smiled, "If I'm not mistaken, you've already approached James, and he rejected you, right?"
Seeing the indifference on Lisa's face, Jennifer received a definite answer, filling her heart with an unbidden sense of pride and emotion. He had turned down such a beautiful woman for her sake. If anyone questioned James's genuine feelings for her, she would be the first to disagree.
Lisa suddenly laughed, "So you told James you were coming to see me? Ms. Johnson, it seems you don't have absolute confidence in yourself, either."
Jennifer regained her usual confidence and composure, looking directly at Lisa and uttered, "Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't tell James. He never mentioned your existence to me. Our love is unbreakable. Ms. Savoy, I admit your status is much higher than mine, but in matters of love, there's no hierarchy. Ms. Savoy, you've lost."
At this point, Heather, who had been watching, couldn't stand it anymore and huffed, "What are you so smug about? Just because you have James's love, you're all proud and arrogant. Do you have any advantage over our lady? Are you prettier or more talented than Lisa?"
Lisa frowned, dissatisfied with Heather's interruption, but didn't scold her.
Jennifer was amused as she said, "You haven't experienced love, so you don't know what it is, do you?"
Heather blushed, even more indignant, and argued, "All you talk about is love. The most annoying women are like you. Love is just an excuse for youthful recklessness. Can you guarantee your love with James will last a lifetime? Do you know how much James has sacrificed for you? He was originally the first heir of the Smith family. For your so-called love, he gave up his inheritance. Now he's surrounded by enemies, without the Smith family's protection. Do you know how many people want him dead, how many seek revenge? Have you thought about this? Your so-called love is just selfishness. You'd rather watch James die than let him have a better life! What right do you have to talk about love?"
Heather blurted everything out in one breath, but even after venting, she still felt unsatisfied and wanted to continue her tirade. At that moment, Lisa shot her a glare and commanded, "Shut up."
Heather, feeling wronged, cooed, "Ms. Savoy, I'm just telling the truth. Now Mr. Smith is besieged on all sides, in constant danger. Not to mention, the Percy family and the Lewis family are out for revenge. If Mr. Smith doesn't return to City of Mysteries, can he survive on his own?"
With Heather's words, Jennifer's eyes lost focus, and she became dazed and unsettled.
"Did you just say that James gave up his inheritance for me?" Jennifer stared at Lisa, biting her lip.
