Chapter 159: The Cure
"This..."
Jennifer, utterly bewildered, handed the phone to James. She couldn't fathom why Alan's attitude had changed so drastically.
Had James done something behind her back that she wasn't aware of?
But that didn't make sense. In the past few days, except for when they were bathing, they had been together almost all the time, even sharing the same bed. Moreover, James's phone had conveniently broken, so it was impossible for him to have contacted Alan without her knowing.
She found herself increasingly unable to recognize James.
James took the phone and, after a brief greeting, immediately heard Alan's obsequious voice. "Hello, is this Mr. Smith? This is Alan, the one who bought the premium Reishi mushroom from you a few days ago."
Since Jennifer had deliberately put the call on speaker, she could also hear Alan's voice. James replied, "I remember."
"Here’s the thing, are you free now? I need your help with something." Alan's tone was exceedingly humble, fearing to displease James.
James, already aware of Alan's intentions, feigned ignorance and asked, "Oh? What does Mr. Jordan need from me?"
Alan hurriedly explained, "Mr. Smith, you are right; the premium Reishi mushroom couldn't cure my daughter's illness."
He quickly recounted the events to James, and said in a near-pleading tone, "Mr. Smith, could you please come to my house and take a look at my daughter? I'm begging you."
By the end, his voice was trembling slightly.
James fell silent, sighing inwardly. He actually had a good impression of Alan—a man who loved his daughter enough to spend five million on medicinal herbs to treat her couldn't be of poor character.
"Is Mr. Wheeler there?" James asked.
"Yes, yes! He's here!"
"Let me speak to him."
"Alright, alright." Alan quickly handed the phone to Edwin, and soon James heard Edwin's voice. "James, nice to see you again."
After exchanging a few pleasantries, James got straight to the point, asking Edwin to describe the treatment process. Once Edwin finished, James sighed and said, "A five-hundred-year-old premium Reishi mushroom has incredibly potent medicinal properties. Even a small piece the size of a fingertip has immense power. Mr. Jordan's daughter's body can't handle it; it requires acupuncture to regulate and open the meridians, allowing the medicinal effects to spread throughout the body quickly. But this is only a temporary solution."
"Now, the acupuncture points Derrick used have had the opposite effect, worsening the patient's condition. It is causing her functions to deteriorate rapidly," James added.
Edwin sighed. "It's all my grandson's fault for acting on his own and causing such a disaster. James, can you come over? I believe only your acupuncture skills can save her now."
"Alright!" James agreed.
After getting Alan's address, James hung up the phone and immediately saw Jennifer's inquisitive gaze. She asked, "How do you know Edwin?"
James, staring at Jennifer's bright red lips, smiled and said, "Kiss me, and I'll tell you."
"Ugh, say it or not, I don't care," Jennifer said, her face stern.
Given the urgency, James didn't dawdle. After returning the phone to Jennifer, he immediately hailed a cab and left with Jennifer.
Fortunately, it wasn't far, and they arrived in less than twenty minutes.
"Mr. Smith, Dr. Johnson, you're finally here. Please come in!" Alan, who had been waiting at the villa entrance, hurriedly greeted them as soon as he saw Jennifer and James get out of the car.
James, seeing Alan's anxious expression, knew the situation was dire and said directly, "Take me to see the patient."
Soon, James found himself in a room with Luna and Derrick, who was kneeling on the floor with a deeply troubled expression.
James felt no sympathy for Derrick. He hated this kind of man, who thought he knew a bit of medicine and had arrogantly taken matters into his own hands, using human life as an experiment. James merely cast him a fleeting glance, his face remaining impassive.
This indifference made Derrick feel even more uncomfortable.
James nodded a greeting to Edwin, then sat beside Luna, offering her a kind smile. "Luna, there's no need to be afraid. I'm just going to check on you; it won't hurt."
Strangely enough, Luna's initial tension and resistance melted away at James's words. She timidly nodded and extended her right hand.
Alan and the others were astonished. Luna, naturally introverted and shy, had become even more fearful of strangers after contracting her illness. Previous doctors had struggled immensely just to get close to her, let alone treat her. Even Edwin had only agreed to see her after much persuasion from Alan and his wife.
And yet, James had managed it with just a smile.
Edwin's pupils contracted in surprise. While Alan and the others might not understand, Edwin did. What James had just demonstrated was an exceptionally advanced skill among doctors—the ability to put a patient at ease with a confident smile.
Some people are naturally afraid of doctors and find it hard to cooperate with treatment, often unable to articulate their symptoms. Ordinary doctors struggle in such cases, but a skilled doctor can calm a patient with a smile, a word, or a small gesture.
This might seem easy, but it's incredibly difficult to achieve, especially when performing acupuncture. If a patient remains tense, the effectiveness of the treatment is significantly reduced.
Once Luna relaxed, James began his examination. His brow furrowed slightly, then relaxed.
Alan, unable to contain himself, asked, "Mr. Smith, how is she? Can you cure her?"
All eyes were on James, even Derrick, who was kneeling, couldn't help but glance at him.
"I need a box of silver needles," James replied, not directly answering the question.
Alan, though anxious, didn't dare ask more and quickly handed the silver needles to James.
James moved swiftly. After taking the needles, he immediately began to give Luna acupuncture.
Edwin watched intently, his eyes wide open, closely observing James's technique.
The more he watched, the more confused he became. This wasn't the miraculous acupuncture method he had seen before; it was something different.
And yet, it seemed no less complex.
James's movements were straightforward, and he took far less time than Derrick. He was done in about ten minutes.
After removing all the silver needles, James massaged a few acupoints on Luna's body and then said, "She's halfway cured. Now, take her for a good hot bath and a hearty meal, and she'll be fully recovered."
Alan and his family were dumbfounded.
'Is it really that simple?' they thought.
It seemed like James had done nothing more than a few needle pricks, taking only about ten minutes.
Edwin sighed deeply and offered James a heartfelt compliment. "James, your acupuncture skills are truly extraordinary!"
