Chapter 494 A Change in Mindset

Jennifer was taken aback and said, "Really? How did you figure it out?"

James replied, "Those three patients just now were faking it. They weren't sick at all, and their pale faces were due to makeup."

As he spoke, Jennifer immediately understood. Her expression changed, and she said somewhat angrily, "I knew he had an ulterior motive for approaching me."

After a pause, Jennifer added, "But what is his purpose in doing this?"

James smiled and said, "To win your favor, I guess."

Jennifer frowned, and whatever little goodwill she had for Calvin vanished completely. She even started to feel disgusted with him. She hated it when people approached her with hidden agendas, especially since she was already married. Such behavior was immoral.

"I can't believe I was grateful to him just now. It turns out Calvin isn't a good person at all!" Jennifer said coldly. Suddenly, she thought of something and curiously asked, "Since you knew he had a problem, why did you agree to have dinner with him?"

James said, "To play along and see who he's working with."

Jennifer was very smart and immediately understood what James meant. "He refused just now. Could he have realized that we saw through his scheme?"

"Maybe," James shook his head and said.

Next, James and Jennifer returned to the Hall of Benevolent Medicine to continue their consultations.

After what had just happened, there weren't many patients, and Jennifer was happy to have some free time to chat with James.

Jennifer didn't ask James what he did when he went back. She had complete trust in him.

After work, James went home, and Dennis and Kaitlyn were very happy. They had prepared a big meal for James, and the family enjoyed a harmonious time together.

"James, enjoy yourself. Look at you, you've lost weight since you came back."

"Young people need to eat more. When I was your age, I ate a lot at every meal." Dennis and Kaitlyn said.

James looked at the food in his bowl, which was always full, and felt the love and care from Dennis and Kaitlyn. Although the family was small, it was filled with warmth and concern, making him feel very happy. It was a stark contrast to the cold atmosphere of the Smith family.

He increasingly enjoyed the atmosphere of this small family, free from scheming and full of love and warmth.

Dennis and Kaitlyn didn't know his true background and thought he was just a poor boy from the countryside. They never asked him to take them back because they thought James felt inferior.

So, since James didn't say anything, they didn't ask.

They were just happy as long as James and Jennifer were safe and healthy.

The best thing would be for them to have a child soon, so they could become grandparents, which would be even more perfect.

Finally, after dinner, as they were about to leave the table, Dennis said earnestly, "James, over the years, we've misunderstood you. You're not a coward; you're truly capable. It's been a grievance for you to join the Johnson family."

Dennis's sudden words left James a bit confused.

Then Kaitlyn added, "Yeah, James, we've said many harsh things over the years. It was our fault, and we hope you don't take it to heart. Here, we formally apologize to you."

As she spoke, they were about to stand up to apologize, which scared James. He quickly stood up to stop them and said, "Hey, what are you doing? Stop it."

They were stopped by James and sat back down. Dennis said, "James, if you have any grievances, just tell us. We made mistakes in the past, but we hope the family can be happy together in the future."

Kaitlyn felt the same way.

To be honest, James was a bit surprised. Dennis and Kaitlyn's earnest attitude made him feel very uncomfortable. Moreover, seeing their guilt, James felt quite conflicted.

To say that James had no emotions after suffering so much in the Johnson family over the years would be a lie. But he understood that, strictly speaking, it wasn't Dennis and Kaitlyn's fault, nor was it Jennifer's fault. It was his own behavior that was so weak and disappointing.

On the contrary, the fact that they tolerated James and didn't kick him out was already very kind of them.

So any dissatisfaction James had was rationally digested long ago.

"Dennis, Kaitlyn! I really don't blame you. Over the years, I've indeed performed poorly. The fact that you didn't kick me out is already the greatest kindness to me," James said sincerely.

Jennifer was also deeply moved. She held James's hand, her eyes filled with guilt.

James held her hand back, indicating that he didn't mind.

Dennis said, "If you really don't hold a grudge against us, why haven't you and Jennifer had a child yet?"

"Well..." James was stumped and didn't know how to answer. The truth might drive Dennis and Kaitlyn crazy. He and Jennifer had been married for five years and hadn't even shared a room, so having a child was out of the question.

Kaitlyn said, "James, you're not young anymore. You've been married for over five years, and there's been no news. Is there a problem with your relationship?"

James was once again at a loss for words and could only look to Jennifer for help.

Jennifer lowered her head, indicating that she had no solution either.

At this moment, Dennis said something that shocked James, "James, we're not selfish. We know that with your abilities, it's our good fortune to have you in the Johnson family. We've thought about it, and in the future, the child you and Jennifer have can take your surname, not Jennifer's, to continue the Smith family bloodline."

With this, not only was James surprised, but Jennifer also looked up in shock at Dennis.

It was known that Dennis was a very traditional man. He had chosen James as his son-in-law because James agreed that their future children would take the Johnson surname.

His only requirement for taking James in was that the children would take the Johnson surname and be his grandchildren, continuing the Johnson family bloodline.

And now, Dennis was relenting.

It's unbelievable.

With their reactions, Dennis shook his head and said, "I admit, my previous views were too extreme. But recently, I've come to understand that whether it's a grandson or a granddaughter, they're still my descendants. So, James, if you have any concerns about this, you don't need to worry anymore. Just have a child with Jennifer, and they can take your surname, Smith."
