Chapter 385 I'm Already Married
James felt totally lost. Five years ago, he would've never guessed he'd end up in a mess like this.
The Hall of Benevolent Medicine had already shut its doors for the day. Everyone else had bounced, leaving Jennifer to sort out the herbs.
She was still as skinny as ever, but at least she didn't look as worn out. Seemed like she was finally getting some decent rest.
James watched from afar, feeling his mood slowly settle. He sighed, wondering how many more chances like this he'd get.
He stood there for a solid half hour, waiting until Jennifer finished up and was about to head home, before deciding to split.
Just then, a car rolled up to the Hall of Benevolent Medicine. Out stepped a good-looking dude with a bunch of flowers, heading straight for the place.
James frowned, feeling a pang of discomfort.
'Is Jennifer already moving on?' he couldn't help but think.
His first reaction was disbelief. He knew Jennifer wasn't like that. They'd been married for five years. Even at his lowest, Jennifer had never bailed on him. How could she be into someone else now? It didn't add up.
The handsome guy walked into the Hall, handed Jennifer the flowers, and smiled warmly. Jennifer didn't turn them down, said something, took the flowers, and even sniffed them with her eyes closed!
James's eyes widened, and he felt his heart skip a beat.
He hadn't believed Jennifer would fall for someone else. But seeing this, he had to face the truth.
He figured it might happen, but not this fast.
"Elio, your flowers are lovely, but you gave them to the wrong woman. I'm married," Jennifer said flatly, handing the flowers back.
Elio's smile didn't falter. "These flowers aren't about love. They're just a friendly gesture. Your husband wouldn't be so petty, right?"
He was so smooth it was hard to dislike him. With his good looks, tall frame, and business vibe, he was pretty charming.
Jennifer didn't feel any romantic vibes for him, but she didn't find him as annoying as other guys either. Since she'd known Elio, he'd always kept a respectful distance, was great at reading the room, and never did anything to make her uncomfortable. He had mad emotional intelligence.
At that moment, a few big trucks rumbled by, blocking James's view. He didn't see Jennifer giving the flowers back to Elio. When the trucks passed, he saw Jennifer and Elio chatting and laughing.
Elio even helped with the herbs, and Jennifer didn't seem to mind at all, like she was cool with it.
James's breathing sped up, and he shook his head, hating himself. "James, you're such a hypocrite. You're divorced, and you still hope Jennifer won't move on? Isn't this what you wanted? Since you can't make her happy and you're leaving Lindwood City, isn't it good she's finding her own happiness?" he thought.
Even though he got it, James still felt a knot in his stomach.
They'd been married for five years. Sure, they never really slept together, but there was still a bond.
James sighed, tried to shake off his feelings, and moved his feet to leave when, Jennifer, who had finished up and was about to head home, looked towards the door and saw a familiar figure across the street. She froze, eyes wide.
That familiar figure, and the quick glimpse of his profile as he turned.
It was him.
It was James.
Jennifer pushed past Elio, excitement bubbling up, and dashed across the street.
Elio was caught off guard by Jennifer's sudden move. In his mind, Jennifer was always calm and collected, never in a rush. This was the first time he'd seen her so worked up, totally out of character.
Jennifer ran across the street without a second thought. Luckily, no big trucks were passing by. Three small cars screeched to a halt, managed to avoid an accident but caused a bit of chaos.
When she got to the other side, James was gone. She looked around but couldn't find him, like he was a ghost.
She even called out his name a few times, but there was no answer but weird looks from people passing by.
"It was you, it had to be you. You haven't left. You still care about me. Why won't you show yourself?" Jennifer muttered, looking lost.
Elio came over and asked, "Jennifer, what's up? Who did you see?"
Jennifer pulled her gaze back, shook her head lightly, and sighed, "It's nothing."
Elio, concerned, said, "Jennifer, you can't do that again. There are so many cars. What if something happened?"
His concern was clear, and so were his feelings for Jennifer. With his good looks, he was a catch. But Jennifer's heart was somewhere else, and his concern didn't move her at all. "Elio, you should go back. I can't go to the movies with you tonight."
Elio felt a pang of disappointment but didn't push it. He kept his cool and said with a gentle smile, "I'm sorry. You've had a long day, and I shouldn't have asked you to a movie. Let me drive you home instead. I'd like to meet your family."
He was so polite it was hard to say no. But Jennifer still shook her head, "No need, I'll just grab a cab."
Elio's smile froze, awkward.
Elio was a blind date her family had set up last month. He had good qualities and excellent manners. But her heart was taken, and she had no interest in Elio.
Elio wanted to say more, but Jennifer had already turned and walked away, her attitude cold.
With that, Elio's warm and polite smile vanished. A dark look crossed his face.
