Chapter 144: Heart of the Sea

"Wow, this diamond necklace is absolutely stunning!"
"The quality of these diamonds looks so high."
"It's so beautiful. If someone buys it for me, I'd agree to marry him right away!"
"You're dreaming. This diamond necklace is worth a lot, much more than the one we saw earlier. It must be at least two million dollars. Only a billionaire could afford such an expensive necklace."
"I've never seen such a beautiful necklace in my life."
The women around started exclaiming, their eyes firmly fixed on the necklace.
James initially wanted to check the price but found that this diamond necklace had no price tag.
Moreover, despite calling out for a while, no salesperson came over to assist him. They were all gathered around Barbara and Loren, and treated James as if he were invisible.
James frowned. How could such a large jewelry store be filled with so many snobbish people?
At that moment, a relatively petite and introverted salesperson, who had been standing in the corner for a long time, walked over to James. She said, "Hello, sir. This necklace just arrived at our store yesterday. It's also a masterpiece by a renowned jewelry designer. The name of the necklace is Heart of the Sea. In terms of materials, craftsmanship, and design, it's superior to the Heart of Supreme you saw earlier. As you can tell, it's also very expensive."
As she continued introducing, her voice grew softer, and she gazed at the Heart of the Sea with a burning desire. It was so beautiful that she dreamed of owning it.
"Heart of the Sea? That's a nice name." James smiled. If he remembered correctly, the diamond necklace in the movie Titanic was also called Heart of the Sea.
"What is the price of this necklace?" James asked.
Others were also curious. They stopped what they were doing and moved closer to listen attentively.
It was clear that this salesperson was new to the job. Not only was she young, but she also still had an air of innocence about her. Her eyes revealed her introverted nature and even a bit of insecurity.
Unlike the other salespeople, she looked at James without any disdain and always had a smile on her face, making people feel comfortable. It was evident that she had a good personality.
Because of her insecure and timid nature, she was often ostracized by her colleagues, and many of her potential customers were taken away by them. As a result, she had been working for almost two months without closing a single deal. The manager had warned her that if she didn't make a sale this month, she would be fired.
She had witnessed James being mocked earlier and deeply empathized with his situation. So, when no one else came to assist James, she couldn't help but step in.
She didn't think James would buy the Heart of the Sea, but out of courtesy, she still said, "This Heart of the Sea is priced at two million. It's very expensive and not cost-effective.; you could buy a villa in Lindwood City for that amount."
She spoke softly, trying to advise James sincerely.
"Is there a discount?" James asked.
The introverted salesperson gently shook her head and said apologetically, "I'm sorry, sir. There's no discount on the Heart of the Sea at the moment. The price was set personally by the designer and is fixed at two million."
"Alright." James thought, 'I had just taken two million dollars from Curtis last night, so buying the Heart of the Sea would leave me with exactly one dollar.'
Just as he was about to say he would buy it, Barbara and Loren walked over again and said, "Mr. Smith, you can't be serious about buying it, can you? This costs two million dollars. Can you really afford that? Sorry, I misspoke. Have you ever even seen that much money?"
Loren followed up and said, "Barbara, how can you say that? His plain attire doesn't prove that he isn't secretly a billionaire who can actually afford two million dollars."
"Well, I'll be waiting to see that." Barbara continued to laugh.
James originally wanted to be polite. After all, Barbara was Jennifer's middle school classmate, and Jennifer had a favor to ask from her. However, Barbara and her husband constantly mocked Jennifer, so James decided he didn't need to be polite to them.
"Really? I remember you came here to buy jewelry. Which one caught your eye? Why don't you also buy one?" James said with a smile.
Barbara raised an eyebrow, sensing James's provocation. She despised people who pretended to be wealthier than they were. She turned to the nearby salesperson and said, "Besides this Heart of the Sea, what's the most expensive piece of jewelry in your store?"
The salesperson was overjoyed, her smile almost bursting forth. She tried to contain her excitement and said, "Ma'am, you must be very wealthy. Besides the Heart of the Sea, the most expensive piece is the Heart of Supreme. If you decide to buy it, I can ask our manager to give you the best possible discount."
Barbara waved her hand grandly. "No need, the price is very fair."
Loren, standing beside her, glared and said, "Barbara, are you crazy? I can't afford to buy you something that expensive."
Displeased with Loren's attitude, Barbara held back her annoyance and said, "Do you think James can afford the two-million-dollar Heart of the Sea?"
Loren thought about it and realized that James couldn't possibly afford the 'Heart of the Sea'.
"Since James could pretend to buy one, why couldn't I?" he told himself.
Feeling reassured, he said generously, "Yes, we can buy that necklace. But we will buy one after this wealthy gentleman pays his necklace first."
The salesperson's smile froze upon hearing Loren's words. She internally cursed him for obviously teasing her.
Everyone turned to look at James, curious to see what he would do next. No one believed James could afford a two-million-dollar necklace. They all thought he must be out of his mind to put himself in such an awkward position.
At the same time, they felt pity for Jennifer. They thought that it was a huge loss that such a beautiful woman married to such a foolish man.
Jennifer felt the stares of the crowd; her face turned expressionless. She had completely lost hope in James.
James, however, smiled and said to Loren, "Alright, let's pay together then."
"Fine," Loren sneered, eager to see what trick James would pull next. He walked over to James and held out his hand, indicating that James should pay first.
James turned to the introverted salesperson and said, "Please give me the bill. I'll pay by card."
The introverted salesperson was at a loss. She was just a young girl and had never encountered such a situation before. Unsure of what to do, she looked to her colleagues for help, but they ignored her. In her panic, she followed the procedure and prepared the bill for James.
"Sir, the bill is ready. Are you sure you want to buy the necklace?" she asked nervously.
James kept his smile and nodded. "Yes, please swipe the card."
"Alright."
She took James's card with both hands, swiped it, and James input his PIN. Then, the entire store echoed with the sound of transaction approval.
"Successfully charged two million."
