Chapter 164 Blackmailing Jared
As Jared scrutinized James, James also sized up Jared, slowly straightening his posture, no longer cowering.
This was the second time James had met Jared. To be honest, he was quite surprised.
'Jared was Harmony's former fiancé; what was he doing here? Could it be that Jared thought I had something going on with Harmony?' James thought.
James didn't have any particular fondness for Jared. Leaving everything else aside, when Harmony was sick and needed comfort the most, Jared not only failed to offer warmth but even sent someone to call off the engagement. Such behavior didn't speak highly of his character.
Of course, the matter was between Harmony and Jared and had nothing to do with him as an outsider. So James decided that as long as Jared didn't provoke him, there was no need for any confrontation.
One had to admit, Jared was quite handsome, a typical charismatic man. Tall and well-built, he exuded a confident aura that was very attractive to women. No wonder someone like Harmony had been drawn to him.
Jared circled the pool table and walked up to James, stopping just half a meter away. He squinted his eyes and stared at James without saying a word, exuding a powerful presence meant to intimidate James.
There were a dozen people around them, and seeing Jared's action, they all gathered around, watching with keen interest.
If it had been someone like Curtis or Loren, they would have been scared stiff. But James didn't even blink, as if Jared and his entourage's pressure had no effect on him whatsoever.
Jared was displeased to see that James remained unfazed. He thought to himself that James must be a useless fool who couldn't read others' emotions.
"James, you've got some guts, daring to mess with my woman, Jared Perry?" Jared suddenly roared, his gaze cold as ice, without any warning. Normally, such an outburst would have surely scared anyone to the ground.
Jared had learned this trick from movies and had tried it several times with great success. Generally, timid people are scared and stiff, and some even wet their pants. He particularly enjoyed this kind of bullying and was certain that James would fall for it and be scared out of his wits.
But soon, he realized something was wrong. Not only was James not scared, but he also laughed and said, "I think you misunderstand. Harmony and I are just ordinary friends."
Jared furrowed his brows deeply. He was extremely displeased with James's reaction. In his eyes, James not only remained unfazed but also had the audacity to speak as if nothing had happened. It felt like the biggest insult to him.
His expression darkened. "I don't care if you're just friends. I'm warning you Harmony is my woman. From today on, you must sever all ties with her and never see her again. Otherwise, I will make you regret ever being born!"
His expression was extremely cold, filled with murderous intent, as he stared intently at James. To cultivate his aura of menace and authority, Jared had trained abroad and had killed many animals with his bare hands, developing a certain disregard for life. Even the elders in his family felt fear when facing him.
Now, he was using his most ferocious gaze on James, aiming to crush his spirit.
Although he had a dozen people with him, he had no intention of using physical force against James. In his view, only the incompetent resorted to fists to threaten their opponents. Truly capable people crushed others mentally by imposing pressure, and this method was the most effective.
However, James's reaction once again left him disappointed.
James seemed completely unaffected by Jared's menacing aura. Without even blinking, he asked, "How much are you willing to pay?"
"What?"
Jared was momentarily stunned, caught off guard, and stared at James in astonishment.
The others had the same reaction. They all thought James would be scared silly, but they didn't expect James not only to remain unfazed but also to say something completely unexpected.
James rolled his eyes and frowned. "I said, how much are you willing to pay?"
Jared finally understood, but he was still bewildered, unable to grasp what James was getting at. "What exactly are you trying to say?"
He didn't realize that the aura he had painstakingly built up was being effortlessly dismantled by James's few words.
James extended his right hand, rubbing his thumb and forefinger together, and gave a knowing look. "This, understand? You rich folks like to solve problems with money, right? How much are you willing to pay me?"
Jared finally grasped James's meaning. He couldn't help but stare at James in astonishment.
The others were equally shocked, looking at James with peculiar expressions.
'What was this guy thinking? In such a situation, he dared to turn the tables and blackmail Jared? Was he out of his mind?' They all thought to themselves.
Jared burst into laughter. "Interesting, you are truly an interesting guy!"
It seemed like he had heard the funniest joke, laughing until tears welled up. Under his lead, the others also burst into laughter.
James smiled silently, gazing at Jared. He was genuinely curious to see what kind of charm a man who could win Harmony's affection possessed.
Finally, Jared finished laughing and refocused on James. "James, do you even know who I am? Do you dare to blackmail me? Do you think I won't do anything to you?"
James sighed. "So, you're unwilling to spend the money? I thought you loved Harmony so much. I thought you were so rich. You're not even as generous as that guy in the white suit who gave me three million dollars in one go."
Jared's mouth twitched violently at these words. Looking at James's disdainful face, he felt disgusted.
He was supposed to be the one threatening James, so how did it turn into James blackmailing him? The turn of the situation made Jared confused.
'Hold on, what did he just say about a handsome guy in a white suit giving him three million dollars in one go? Could there be someone else trying to woo Harmony away from him?' Jared thought to himself.
"Hey, who was that guy in the white suit you mentioned? Why did he give you three million dollars?" Jared glared at James, filled with anger.
James, of course, ignored him. He chuckled, continuing to rub his fingers together, making an asking money gesture.
Jared frowned deeply.
"How much do you want?" He asked.
James smiled. "How much is up to you. The more you give me, the more I'll do for you."
Jared was taken aback. Why did this sound so familiar?
He remembered. Every year, when he went to the temple to pray, the monks would say the same thing!
