Chapter 506 The Competition Among Old Classmates

The next day, after work, James and Jennifer hurried to the hotel they had agreed upon.

Because of what happened with Calvin, Jennifer was a bit worried about James, fearing that the forces behind Calvin might retaliate. James reassured her multiple times not to worry, saying that with him around, nothing would go wrong.

Jennifer was still uneasy. That day, she suggested several times that the family should go on a trip abroad. After all, Dennis and Kaitlyn had lived most of their lives without ever leaving the country. Now that they had the means, taking Dennis and Kaitlyn out for a trip would be a good idea.

Jennifer did not explicitly state it and James was aware of her intention to go abroad. It was simply to avoid certain troubles. However, such matters could not be evaded by just leaving the country for a few weeks. With Brent's influence, even if she went abroad for a year or more, she would still face his retribution upon returning. Therefore, it was unavoidable, unless she could let go of everything in Lindwood City and move her entire family abroad permanently.

For Dennis and Kaitlyn, it was clearly unacceptable.

The key point was, there was no need to hide. If he were forced to leave the country by a small family like the Lewis family, he would be laughed at by the members in the City of Mysteries.

James kept comforting Jennifer, assuring her that everything would be fine.

After the incident with Calvin, Brent had already shifted his attention to James. When trouble came, it would come directly to James and not to Jennifer, so James wasn't worried about Jennifer and Dennis and Kaitlyn's safety.

Besides, even if Brent didn't come looking for him, he would still go looking for Brent.

Even someone like Lester had been killed at James's hands. A small fry like Brent was no big deal.

When they arrived at the hotel suite, Dennis and Kaitlyn were already there. Besides Dennis and Kaitlyn, there was also an elderly couple chatting with them.

"James, you're here," Dennis waved at Jennifer and said with a smile, "Come over and greet Valentin and Hestia."

Jennifer walked over gracefully and greeted them politely, "Mr. Dobbins, Mrs. Dobbins, nice to see you."

Valentin was not tall and wore casual attire. His body had grown plump, giving the impression that he was over sixty years old. His face was full and prosperous-looking, unmistakably marking him as a wealthy individual.

Hestia was around fifty-seven, with a similarly plump figure. Her expression carried an unmistakable air of superiority, typical of wealthy individuals. Just by looking at her face, one could tell she wasn't as easygoing as Kaitlyn.

Seeing how elegant Jennifer had grown, they were a bit surprised. "It's been seven or eight years, Jennifer, and you are so gorgeous!"

Hestia said, "Indeed. When we last saw Jennifer, she was just a little girl, and now she's grown so beautiful. Jennifer, are you married?"

Jennifer held James's hand tightly and smiled, "Mrs. Dobbins, I am married. This is my husband, James."

Jennifer then introduced the elderly couple to James. James smiled and greeted them politely, "Mr. Dobbins, Mrs. Dobbins, I am Jennifer's husband."

James's demeanor was neither humble nor arrogant, but his outfit was too plain, still the same cheap clothes as before, causing Valentin and Hestia to frown slightly.

Given their discernment, James was just an ordinary working-class man, the kind you could easily find in abundance on the streets. In their eyes, it was inconceivable that someone as strikingly beautiful as Jennifer would be interested in a man like James.

Furthermore, the Dennis they knew was a man of considerable discernment, someone unlikely to marry off his daughter to an ordinary man. They truly could not comprehend it.

But they quickly thought of the many hidden millionaires in Serenity State who dressed plainly. Perhaps James was a millionaire in disguise. Valentin asked, "Jennifer, what business is your husband in?"

Over the years, Jennifer had encountered this situation countless times. She admitted that she used to care a lot about it and was often embarrassed to answer when asked.

But now, she had completely let go of such thoughts. Firstly, she had let go of her prejudices against James. Secondly, she knew that James was truly capable. Especially since James's identity was from a prominent family in the City of Mysteries, far beyond these petty comparisons.

Jennifer smiled, "We are currently running a clinic together. It's not a big business."

Dennis coughed lightly twice. Valentin was an old classmate, and they frequently engaged in mutual competition. Now, Dennis did not want to lose to Valentin. He said, "My son-in-law James is actually a businessman; the clinic is merely one of his minor enterprises. James has always maintained a close partnership with Michael, the wealthiest man in Lindwood City."

Although he said this, his face showed a guilty expression. After speaking, he coughed twice and took a sip of wine to cover his guilt.

Jennifer rolled her eyes helplessly.

James smiled and didn't expose Dennis. In fact, he was indeed good friends with Michael, although they hadn't seen each other for quite some time.

However, Dennis's acting was a bit lacking, and Valentin saw through it immediately. He showed a meaningful smile and laughed twice. He knew Dennis's character very well.

"Speaking of Michael, I came back this time to seek a partnership with him. What field do James and Michael collaborate in? Maybe we can collaborate too," Valentin said with a smile. "I happen to have a project."

With this, Dennis immediately felt awkward. He was just bragging and had no project at all. He could only laugh dryly and change the topic.

But Valentin was not willing to let go of this opportunity. Throughout the meal, he mostly talked about how he had made his fortune over the years, what projects he had done, how much money he had made, and how many big shots he had business dealings with.

After listening to him, it seemed he had done quite well, with assets worth at least hundreds of millions of dollars.

Compared to Valentin, Dennis was far behind.

So, throughout the meal, Dennis felt stifled, listening to Valentin brag while he had nothing worth mentioning.

Dennis had to change the topic again, "Let's drop talk this. Valentin, what about your son? What business is he in? Didn't he come to Lindwood City with you?"

Valentin said, "Don't mention him. My son is even more capable than I am, always running around. I asked him to come to Lindwood City, but he went off to discuss business halfway. I told him to come for dinner, so he should be here soon."

Just as Valentin finished speaking, the door to the suite opened, and a man in a branded suit and wearing a luxury wristwatch walked in.
