Chapter 47 The Quarrel

John knelt down. Michael’s phone call completely shattered his pride and dignity.

He earned a lot but spent even more. These past two years, he had been living it up outside. Combined that with his mortgage and car loans, his fixed monthly expenses amounted to thirty to forty thousand. If he lost his job at Lindwood City Hospital, he would be finished.

Originally, his father used a lot of connections to get him this position. With his abilities alone, he was not qualified to be the head of the department. If his family found out he was fired from Lindwood City Hospital, he would be done for.

So he knelt down without hesitation, begging for Michael's forgiveness. In his view, kneeling to Michael was not a disgraceful thing to do.

But the words that followed from Michael left him stunned, "Kneeling to me won't help. You should kneel to Dr. Smith."

John lowered his head and clenched his fists, tears of regret welled up in his eyes.

Kneeling to Michael was one thing, but kneeling to James, the waste he had humiliated for three whole years, was really difficult for him. It was even more painful than death!

But he had no choice, because he knew that Michael clearly listened to James.

He was unwilling and couldn't understand how James knew Michael. How did James, a useless man who couldn't even find a job, who was always stepped on by others at the hospital, know Michael? If it weren't for Jennifer supporting him all along, this guy would have starved to death long ago!

‘God is really unfair, unfair!’

Looking up, he saw James's annoying face, and for the first time, felt such intense grievance and pain. If given a chance to do it all over again, no matter how much courage he had, he would never mock James!

He moved on his knees towards James, "Dr. Smith, please, let me go."

With so many people present, no one sympathized with him because they had witnessed his arrogance and the way he insulted James earlier. He was purely his own doing, and no one pitied him.

James, of course, didn't either. Just because he had a good personality didn't mean he had no temper. After being humiliated by John repeatedly and even trying to cuckold him, he naturally wouldn't show mercy just because John knelt down. And he was well aware that someone like John wouldn't be grateful for being forgiven. Letting him go now would only lead to a thousandfold retaliation later on.

So he simply ignored John, and instead walked towards Jennifer, "Darling, let me take you home."

Jennifer was captivated by his deep gaze, her delicate body trembling slightly, her heart inexplicably quickening, and she nodded reflexively.

Michael approached Jennifer and said, "Miss, you've married a good man."

Although Michael and James were not acquainted, having only met once, Michael, with his knack for reading people, could tell that James was no ordinary person. Jennifer marrying James was a great stroke of luck.

Jennifer nodded gently without saying much. She still couldn't quite understand how James knew Michael.

After they left, the crowd in the airport erupted into discussion, actively speculating about James's background, filled with admiration. Some attractive women even started to inquire about James's contact information, wanting to make a connection. Joking aside, a man who could make the richest man in Lindwood City so respectful to him was definitely not an ordinary person. So what if he was already married? What does that matter? Weren’t there always many women around an attractive man these days? Besides, divorce was no longer a rare thing these days.

As for John, no one paid him any attention.

He knelt on the ground like a lost soul, and after a long time, he finally burst into tears.

"How did you get to know Michael?"

In the Maserati President, James drove while Jennifer sat in the passenger seat. She was silent for a long time, but as they were about to reach home, she couldn't help but ask.

James said, "I saved his father a while back."

"That’s it?"

"Yeah, that’s it."

The car fell silent again. Only the sound of the engine roaring could be heard.

Jennifer stole a glance at James's face. For some reason, as James remained silent, she felt a bit flustered, a feeling she had never experienced before.

Finally, she couldn't help but ask, "Since you know Michael, why didn't you tell me?"

James smiled bitterly, "I think I told you."

Jennifer fell silent again, unsure of how to respond. Indeed, James had told her, but she just hadn't believed it.

She found herself unable to understand James, the man she had been with for five years. It was as if he had become mysterious overnight.

"Since you know Michael, why did you let John humiliate you?" Jennifer voiced her doubts.

James remained silent for a few seconds before helplessly saying, "I didn't know Michael was coming. In fact, I'm not familiar with him."

However, his sincere words fell on Jennifer's ears and turned into boasting and concealment.

"James, do you think you're so great just because you know Michael?" Jennifer couldn't stand his attitude.

James was taken aback, quickly explaining, "No, I really don't know him. I've only met him once. Why would I lie to you?"

Jennifer felt even more uncomfortable, "Do you think I'm a fool? If he's not familiar with you, why would he go out of his way to find you and be so enthusiastic towards you?!"

James was also a bit annoyed, braving the rain and rushing over as quickly as possible. As his wife, not only was she not moved, but she also gave him a hard time, joining forces with outsiders to humiliate him. Even a clay figure would get angry, let alone James. At this point in their marriage, he was truly feeling tired.

"If you don't believe me, that's fine." He said in a low voice, too tired to explain further. No matter what he did, he wouldn't get Jennifer's approval, so why continue to endure the injustice?

He could tolerate all the ridicule and misunderstandings from others, but Jennifer, as his wife, had never truly looked at him properly, let alone fulfilled her duties as a wife.

"You!" Seeing him like this, Jennifer became even angrier, "James, what's with this attitude?!"

James smiled. " My attitude? It is much nicer than the sarcasm you showed me at the airport."

"You dare to say that? You knew I had just returned from a business trip and would be with many colleagues, yet you came over dressed in these cheap clothes and riding an electric scooter. Have you ever thought about me?" Jennifer said angrily.

"So you think I embarrassed you, right?" James's expression was calm to the point of being terrifying.

Jennifer avoided his gaze, gritting her teeth, "Yes, do you know how much you’ve embarrassed me these past five years? James, you clearly know Michael, but you didn't tell me. Do you even have me as your wife in your heart!"

James's expression was blank, his fingers gripping the steering wheel tightening.

Seeing him indifferent, Jennifer became even more furious, snorted, "Stop the car, I'll take a taxi back by myself, don't bother, Dr. Smith, to drive me home!"

"Fine." James braked and stopped the car.

Watching Jennifer slam the car door and leave, James let out a long sigh and began calling Michael, "Mr. Brown, where are you? I'm coming over now."
