Chapter 331 Another Big Shot
So, originally, Edwin didn't have James' number 'cause after they split that day, James ditched his old SIM card and hadn't grabbed a new one yet. He just got a new SIM card and informed Edwin.
"Hey, Dr. Wheeler, what's up?" James answered with a grin.
Edwin's voice came through, "Can't I call just 'cause I'm bored?"
James chuckled, "Nah, that's not what I meant."
James had mad reverence for Edwin. Even though Edwin called him his little bro, James saw him as more than just an older brother; he had that old-school respect for his elders.
Edwin laughed, "Mr. Smith, how's the recovery going? With burns as bad as yours, you gotta take care of yourself. There's a ton of stuff you need to watch out for."
Edwin rattled off a list of things to be careful about—what not to eat, keeping the wounds from water, all that jazz. James felt touched but also a bit helpless. He laughed, "Dr. Wheeler, you forget I'm a doctor too? I've been on top of all that. Don't worry, I'm doing great."
Actually, he pulled off something huge a few days ago, taking down the Perry family.
Edwin didn't buy it. As a doc, he knew how bad James's burns were. It was a miracle for a regular person to survive that. No matter how tough James was, a full recovery seemed impossible, and the aftereffects would mess with his life.
What Edwin didn't know was that James was no ordinary guy. Now, he was fully healed except for the scars.
After chatting for a bit, Edwin switched gears, "Mr. Smith, have you been in touch with Dr. Johnson lately?"
James was caught off guard, silent for a moment. He asked, "Dr. Wheeler, when did Jennifer come to see you?"
Edwin sighed inwardly at James's quick catch, realizing Jennifer had visited him.
"She came by a week after you were discharged. Since then, she's called almost every day. Sometimes she even showed up at HC Medical Center, asking if you'd contacted me and begging me to tell her if you had." Edwin sighed, "Jennifer's told me a lot about you, including how her parents are pushing for a divorce. James, don't think I'm nagging, but I've seen a lot in my life. I've never seen a woman as deeply in love as Jennifer. It's only been a short time, but she's already lost a lot of weight. Every time I see her, she looks more worn out. If this keeps up, she's gonna wreck her health!"
Hearing Edwin's words, James felt a lump in his throat, his nose stinging as he breathed quickly.
When he closed his eyes, Jennifer's pitiful, haggard, and thin figure flashed in his mind, his stomach in knots.
Seeing James stay silent for a long time, Edwin continued, "You should come back. It's rare to find love in a world of billions, so why hurt each other because of others?"
James let out a long sigh and said, "Dr. Wheeler, it's way more complicated than you think."
This whole disfigurement thing was just a convenient excuse. The real deal was that James knew he was destined to inherit the Smith family legacy as their top dog. But Jennifer was just an ordinary girl, not cut out to be his wife.
James had to marry someone who matched his status, someone like Emberlyn.
His relationship with Jennifer was doomed from the start.
Before he even became the Johnson family's son-in-law, his dad, Gabriel, had subtly hinted that messing around with ordinary women would only bring trouble.
Even a small family like the Perry family had Uriah marrying someone on their level. So, for a powerhouse like the Smith family, especially with his grandpa Alistair's old-school views, James could have a full picture of Alistair's reaction if he brought Jennifer home.
Even though the five-year period had passed, the Smith family hadn't called him back yet. But James knew it was just a matter of time. Alistair would never give up on him.
So, it was the right call for both him and Jennifer.
Edwin didn't get James's dilemma and thought he was still pissed, so he started lecturing him.
James understood Edwin's good intentions, and just stayed quiet.
After a few minutes of lecturing and seeing James not responding, Edwin sighed and switched topics, "By the way, Mr. Smith, got any time to swing by HC Medical Center these days?"
James asked, "What's up?"
"Well, a big shot from Starlight Province has come down with a weird illness. They've seen a bunch of doctors, but no one's been able to fix it. They want you to take a look. This patient is pretty important, and if you cure them, the perks would be huge."
Another big shot? James was kinda numb to the term "pretty important" and wasn't that interested. He said, "We'll see. If they really want to get better, they should come to me."
Edwin was taken aback, breaking out in a cold sweat. Only James would dare say something like that. In all of Serenity Province, any doctor who knew this big shot's identity would be rushing to treat them. The benefits of curing them would be massive.
But thinking it over, Edwin found that it made sense for someone as young and accomplished as James to have a bit of swagger.
"Well, this big shot is pretty special. It's unlikely they'd come to you." Edwin smiled awkwardly, especially thinking of the temper of this big shot's family, which made it even more unrealistic.
James smiled slightly and said nothing. He was a big shot himself and naturally wouldn't want to suck up to anyone.
After chatting for a few more minutes, seeing that James wasn't so interested, Edwin felt a bit disappointed and ended the call.
Edwin pondered, 'Forget it, I'll give it a shot myself first. If it doesn't work, I'll try to convince James again.'
Anyway, this big shot couldn't be pissed off.
