Chapter 399 Defeated by Oneself
Jennifer didn't exactly rush. She moved slowly, like each step was a struggle, each one hitting James right in the heart.
In the big classroom packed with hundreds of people, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone's eyes were glued to Jennifer. They could all feel the whirlwind of emotions she was going through. Sure, most of them had been in relationships, but none had felt anything quite like what Jennifer was feeling right now.
In their heads, they couldn't help but picture a heart-wrenching love story between Jennifer and James.
Some of the girls, the ones who cried easily, already had tears in their eyes, entirely empathizing with the situation.
The guys were affected too, even if they weren't crying. They felt a heavy weight in their chests and genuinely hoped Jennifer could get James to forgive her and patch things up.
It was like they were watching a super emotional love movie, with James and Jennifer as the stars.
As James heard her approaching footsteps, a shiver ran down his spine. His heart began to race, and an intense wave of anxiety engulfed him.
Jennifer was closing in.
When she was just a few feet away, James couldn't handle it anymore. He made a beeline for the classroom door, determined to get out of there. He knew if he didn't leave now, he might never be able to. So he had to go.
Everyone watched as James left before Jennifer could reach him, and their hearts sank along with hers.
Jennifer gathered all her strength and sped up to catch him.
No matter what, since she saw James today, she couldn't let him slip away again. She knew if he left this time, she might never see him again. So, no matter what it took, even if it meant breaking herself, she had to stop him.
Last time, she let him go. This time, no way.
She chased after him.
But James was way faster. In no time, he was at the door and out of sight.
Seeing him disappear, Jennifer felt like her heart stopped. She couldn't even breathe. "James, please, don't go!"
In her rush, she didn't see the threshold in front of her. She tripped and fell hard, hitting her knee and crying out in pain.
But the pain in her knee was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.
James, already ahead, heard her cry. His heart clenched. He stopped and turned around to see Jennifer on the ground, holding her knee, tears streaming down her face, looking at him with those pleading, passionate eyes.
That look hit him like a ton of bricks, leaving his mind blank and his eyes stinging with the urge to cry.
After all, he was Jennifer's husband. They had lived together for five years. They had five years of shared moments and five years of feelings, how could they just cut that off? Especially with everything that had happened recently, their feelings had grown deeper from the initial indifference.
Especially when they were in the hospital, they had promised each other forever. But not long after, Kaitlyn and Dennis forced him to sign the divorce papers.
James let out a deep sigh, feeling completely helpless.
Seeing Jennifer's tears, he knew he couldn't walk away. In the end, he gave in to his own feelings.
James wasn't heartless. His feelings for Jennifer had grown deeper than he ever realized.
Even Alistair, with all his wisdom, couldn't have seen this coming, right?
Just then, James noticed Arianwen stepping out of the classroom, standing across the corridor, looking at him with equally complicated eyes.
James forced a helpless smile at Arianwen, which also had a hint of relief. He slowly walked over to Jennifer and gently wiped her tears with his sleeve. "Come on, you're a grown-up, still crying like this? Aren't you afraid people will laugh at you?"
Jennifer looked at James intently. Hearing his words, her lips quivered with deep hurt, and her eyes reddened even more, tears streaming down uncontrollably. Soon, James's sleeve was soaked.
Seeing her like this, James felt bad too. He continued, "Alright, stop crying."
Then James glanced down at Jennifer's knee and softly asked, "Does it hurt a lot?"
Jennifer stayed silent. It wasn't out of stubbornness, but because when she tried to speak, her throat felt tight, and she couldn't get a word out. Instead, she just cried, letting out all her pent-up emotions.
Seeing students coming out of the classroom, including Eryx and others, James knew they couldn't stay there, as it would cause a scene. He gave Eryx an apologetic look and then scooped Jennifer up, carrying her away.
Jennifer clung tightly to his neck, resting her head on his chest. At that moment, she felt an overwhelming sense of security and happiness; she was more certain than ever that James was the only man for her.
Soon, James carried Jennifer to a quiet spot behind the school and set her down.
Jennifer thought James was going to leave and quickly grabbed his hand, pleading with fear, "Don't go!"
James gently shook his head. After setting Jennifer down, he started to roll up her pant leg to her knee. He took a quick look at her injury, then placed his right hand on the wound, channeling energy to it.
Instantly, Jennifer sensed a soothing coolness radiating from James's palm to her knee, causing the pain to gradually dissipate.
This was incredible! Jennifer had never experienced anything like this.
She was a doctor and had never heard of such a treatment method.
What was going on?
James spent about five minutes channeling energy to clear the blood clots in Jennifer's knee and ease her pain.
"How do you feel? Pretty amazing, right?" James asked Jennifer with a smile.
