Chapter 66 Heartache, Pierced Like a Knife
What's going on here?
Jennifer had never seen such a scene before in all her life, and she was stunned for a moment.
She knew that the Tony family was coming over, so she left work early to meet them at home, only to witness them in a big brawl.
Soon she saw James sitting at the dining table, eating leisurely, which made her heart beat faster, feeling a strange emotion.
James also glanced at her, his expression equally complex and conflicted. But he quickly looked away and continued to eat with his head down.
Leonard, with a habit of working out, was always in his best shape. The father and daughter were unable to match his strength. He knocked them down, and Tony, the father-in-law, took a punch from him, which left him gasping for breath on the ground.
Tony pointed at Leonard and cursed, "You, you beast, even dare to hit your father-in-law, go to hell!!"
Leonard was not unscathed either; he took a punch to his left eye, grimacing in pain, he rudely retorted, "Shut up! Who do you think you are? You, greedy asshole, asking me for money every day, living extravagantly.
"Do you know how hard I work to get you so much money? Also, don't think I don't know about the dirty things you've done, using my money to hook up with a college girl. If I tell your wife, would she not kill you?"
"You!!!" Tony's face turned pale, and he couldn't finish his words, as if he were being choked.
Already suffering from a sudden increase in his blood pressure, the consecutive emotional turmoil and the blow left him with a lack of oxygen flowing to his head, causing him to faint.
"Dad!" Kayla called out in horror.
Someone said, "Why are you standing there? Call 911 quickly."
Fortunately, the hospital was not far away, and an ambulance arrived quickly to take the fainting Tony back to the hospital.
The incident caused a stir, and it quickly reached the ears of Grandpa Marvin, who, upon hearing the news, almost fainted in shock.
Upon learning the details of the incident, Jennifer was also deeply shocked.
"This time, James did a great job!" Dennis beamed with satisfaction, feeling particularly pleased. Ever since Tony showed up earlier, he had been showing off around and making snide remarks, and Dennis had to put up with it.
Kaitlyn couldn't help but sigh. And she chided Dennis, "Oh, how can you think that way? After all, he is my brother..."
Dennis retorted, "You treat him as a brother, but does he treat you as a sister? Have you forgotten how they've been bullying us for the past few years? Not to mention today’s event, on how they humiliated James. You had seen that yourself.
"This is just karma, and they deserve it. Who would have thought that he always treated Leonard like a treasure, only to have Leonard not only humiliate his daughter but also dare to hit him!"
Upon hearing this, Kaitlyn felt a sense of relief. Over the years, she had indeed endured a lot of mistreatment from Tony's family.
Realizing something, Dennis became serious and said, "By the way, what's going on with you two? It's been five years of marriage, and how come you both still have no children?"
Jennifer blushed instantly and said, "Dad, why are you suddenly bringing this up? I've told you before, I'm not planning on having children right now."
"What do you mean you're not planning on having children? You're 25 already, when your mom was your age, she was already raising a family!" Dennis scolded, "I don't care, you two must bring me a grandchild this year, or others will think you're infertile."
Kaitlyn took a gentler approach, holding Jennifer's hand and saying earnestly, "Jennifer, listen to me. I have been through this. Since you're already married, it would be best to have children sooner rather than later, so it won't be so hard on you in the future."
James remained silent on the side, unsure of what to say.
With the in-laws present, James and Jennifer couldn't sleep in separate rooms and had to enter the same room.
Once inside, the atmosphere became incredibly awkward, and both fell into silence, unsure of what to say.
As James casually opened the futon to lie down, then Jennifer suddenly spoke, "How are your injuries healing?"
James hesitated for a moment, then nodded mechanically, "They're fine now."
For some reason, looking at James's expressionless face, Jennifer felt uncomfortable, as if being pricked by a needle. This feeling was something she had never experienced before.
She didn't understand why she was feeling this way?
She bit her lip and said softly, "Thank you for what you did last time."
James replied, "You're welcome. Go to sleep, it's late."
Jennifer continued, "And I'm sorry."
James turned to look at her for a moment, locking eyes with her face that he had seen for five years. Jennifer did the same.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment.
James smiled and said, "Jennifer, this isn't like you."
To be honest, James had endured Jennifer's anger for five years, so seeing her soften a bit now brought him some satisfaction.
The deeper the love, the more one cares. James still cared deeply for Jennifer.
Jennifer was taken aback. When did she become so sensitive and concerned about James's thoughts?
Could it be that she had fallen for him? No, that's impossible! She immediately pushed away that dreadful thought.
Trying to regain her usual aloof demeanor, Jennifer said, "Hmph, I just don't want to feel guilty."
James chuckled and then said, "Why didn't you tell your parents the truth tonight?"
"What truth?" Jennifer asked, a bit puzzled.
He casually replied, "The truth about our divorce." James deliberately kept his expression light.
Upon hearing the word 'divorce,' Jennifer felt a sudden pain in her heart, as if she were about to lose something very important.
She looked at James. "Do you really want a divorce?" she asked in a soft yet awkward tone.
James looked back at her. "You were the one who first brought up the divorce, right?" he rebutted.
"That's because you've been fooling around!" Jennifer huffed, her emotions inexplicably rising.
James's reaction was quite the opposite. Calmly responding to her, "I've said it before, I haven't been fooling around, let alone doing anything to betray you. Besides, even if there was betrayal, wasn't it you who betrayed first?"
Jennifer's initially agitated emotions were further fueled, and she raised her voice. "Nonsense, I didn't betray you! He didn't even touch my hand!" she retorted, defensively.
"Is that so? In your mind, only physical betrayal counts as betrayal, and psychological infidelity doesn't?" James's emotions began to rise as he too spoke up.
"That's because you've always been so useless! How many sneers have I endured for you, how much injustice have I suffered, don't you know?!" Jennifer exclaimed.
James closed his eyes, suppressing the knife-like pain in his heart.
After a while, he opened his eyes and said, "In that case, let's go to the Civil Affairs Bureau tomorrow and get the paperwork done. You don't have to endure this kind of suffering anymore."
