Chapter 101: The Married Man
Originally, Jared's gaze toward Harmony was filled with love, but when he heard what Harmony had just said, his expression immediately became unnatural, and his eyes revealed disgust and disdain. He quickly distanced himself from Harmony, saying, "Sorry. I just remembered I have something to deal with. Let's talk next time."
"Didn't you say you were going to..." Harmony asked.
Jared pretended not to hear her words and left as if fleeing.
Harmony watched Jared get into his car and leave. The confusion and disappointment on her face disappeared, replaced by a cold expression. However, her slightly reddened eyes betrayed her; she wasn't as calm inside as she appeared on the surface.
Jared was her fiancé, her first love, and the first man she ever loved. She had heard many sweet promises from him. She once thought he truly loved her until he betrayed her for the strange illness.
Originally, Harmony still had some feelings for Jared because she had loved him deeply. But just now, the last bit of affection she had for him vanished completely.
Now, she didn't feel much disappointment; instead, she felt relieved.
Having seen Jared's true colors, Harmony no longer needed to be bothered by his breaking off the engagement.
She was relieved that during her relationship with Jared, she had stuck to her principles and hadn't slept with him. She didn't lose her virginity.
"Nice play." James's words pulled Harmony back from her thoughts.
She proudly said, "Of course, I am smarter than Jared."
The rain had lessened considerably. James said, "If there's nothing else, I'll head back. You should go home now; don't make your family worry."
Harmony pulled up a serious expression and said to him, "Be careful. Jared is quite narrow-minded. He might come after you since he saw you with me today."
James rolled his eyes, acting didn't care about it. He said nonchalantly, "No worries, he won't be able to trouble me for a while."
"Why?" Harmony asked curiously.
James smiled faintly and said, "He has done too many immoral things. He's going to have a streak of bad luck and get into a lot of trouble. He won't have the time to come after me."
Harmony laughed out loud and said sarcastically to James, "So, not only can you cure illnesses, but you can also predict the future? That's impressive! Can you tell me what my future looks like? Will I have good luck soon?"
Ignoring her sarcasm, James carefully examined her face and then said strangely, "Now that you mention it, I do notice that you have some good luck coming your way."
"Really? May I ask what kind of good luck will I have?" Harmony's expression was full of disdain. She thought James was just a fraud.
"You will meet someone you like," James said, looking at her. "Recently, quite a few young gentlemen have been pursuing you, right?"
Harmony rolled her eyes, her face full of contempt. "Of course, ever since sixth grade, I've never lacked suitors."
James touched his nose, feeling a bit awkward. He thought, 'Yes, a beautiful woman like you couldn't possibly lack admirers.'
"Don't move." James suddenly widened his eyes, staring intently at Harmony's face, his expression becoming strange.
Harmony felt very shy under his gaze. Her face turned red, and she pretended to be annoyed, saying, "What are you looking at? Don't you know it's impolite to stare at a girl?"
Though she said so, she didn't feel any displeasure in her heart. Instead, her heartbeat accelerated.
"That's strange," James said, touching his chin.
"What's strange?" Harmony frowned.
James said, "Ms. Brown, didn't you just get out of a relationship? How come you've already got your eye on someone else? And according to my prediction, the person you're into seems to be married..."
"What nonsense are you talking about?" Harmony hurriedly interrupted James, glaring at him angrily. "Who said I have fallen in love with someone?"
Harmony's strong reaction, looking very guilty, made James even more convinced of his conclusion. "Nothing, nothing." He waved his hand.
Harmony bit her lip, glaring at him, and said, "Listen to me clearly, I don't love anyone."
"Got it, got it!" James nodded frantically, thinking to himself, 'Harmony is indeed a young lady; I can't afford to provoke her. Next time, I must avoid her.'
However, James also felt strange. Although Harmony had a bad temper, her standards for suitors were very high. James had heard Jennifer mention this many times. Back in college, many excellent guys pursued Harmony, but she never showed interest.
‘The man Harmony likes now must be outstanding enough to win her favor,’ thought James in his heart.
Harmony's heart was racing, and she was extremely flustered. She didn't understand why she was so panicked. She glared at James, very angry. "Explain to me why you said I'd love a married man."
"I was just talking nonsense, don't take it seriously..."James sighed.
"Speak up!" Harmony took a step forward and looked angrier; as if she were about to beat James up if he didn't explain.
James stepped back a bit, feeling a bit scared, not because he feared Harmony would hit him, but because she was too close, and her ample chest was almost pressing against him.
Since Harmony was Jennifer's friend, James quickly said, "I just made a wild prediction. I was wrong."
He said it directly, and Harmony felt even more confused. To cover up her turmoil, she pretended to be angry, grabbed James by the collar, and pressed him against the wall. "And why do you say I am into a married man?"
James was stunned to see Harmony's expression. Was Harmony so agitated because she didn't know the person she liked was married? That must be it.’
James then told Harmony everything he had just predicted, then earnestly said, "Ms. Brown, it seems you didn't know that man is married. I advise you to investigate him further so you don't get deceived. That would be bad."
James never thought that the person Harmony liked could be him. He believed that even if all the men in the world died, Harmony would never like him.
Therefore, he didn't understand why Harmony was glaring at him with such an expression. He thought she didn't trust him, so he simply kept quiet.
After they parted, Harmony's accelerated heartbeat gradually calmed down. She touched her still-warm face, looked at James's departing figure with a complex expression, and muttered to herself, ‘Could it be that I really like him? No, that's impossible. I'm just grateful to him. Yes, that's it.’
