Chapter 394 Surprising the Students
When James turned to the blackboard to write his name, the students started whispering among themselves.
"Did you guys notice? The new professor's got such a sharp look. Just one glance from him made me nervous."
"Yeah, he seems pretty tough. I don't think he's gonna be easy to deal with."
"Come on, you guys are just too timid. One look and you're scared? Look at him; he only seems a couple of years older than us. What makes him qualified to be our professor? Someone say there’s no one left in the country with good medical skills; I didn’t believe it. But now, it seems true. The school is sending someone like him to teach us. Isn’t this a joke?"
"Yeah, I'm getting more and more disappointed with the school. I thought coming to the medical university would let me learn real traditional medicine, but it seems we were too naive."
Many students were already dissatisfied with James. If it weren't for the leaders attending the lecture, they might have just skipped out, not giving James any respect.
Eryx and the others noticed the students' discontent but didn't step in. They wanted to see how James would handle it since they couldn't attend every class.
After writing his name, James wrote two more words: Traditional Medicine.
"So, what do you guys think traditional medicine is? Can anyone stand up and explain?" James turned around with a faint smile.
He did not commence with a lecture; instead, he inquired about everyone's perception of domestic medical practices, causing all to furrow their brows involuntarily.
Many students thought he was being pretentious, and their impression of him worsened.
"What’s the matter? Aren't you all top students at the medical university? Can't you explain traditional medicine?" James said, deliberately provoking them.
Soon, someone stood up and loudly explained, "Traditional Medicine generally refers to the medical practices created by the people of Sunlandia."
He spoke very formally, like he was reciting from a textbook. After finishing, he showed a mocking expression and asked James, "Professor, if you can't even understand the concept of traditional medicine, are you really here to teach us?"
This sarcasm got laughter and agreement from the hundreds of students present.
A typical new teacher would get angry in such a situation. No matter how good their composure, they would show some embarrassment and annoyance.
But James stayed calm, his expression unchanged, still wearing that faint smile. "Well done, word for word from the book. I assume your exam scores are pretty high?"
The student caught James's implication and snorted. "Absolutely, my exam scores average around eighty."
James continued, "Then let me ask you, how would you treat a sixty-year-old with hypertension and acute cholecystitis?"
The student was immediately stumped, frowning and unable to answer for a long time.
"What’s the matter? You don't know how to treat it?" James's smile remained bright.
The student, thick-skinned, said, "The professor hasn't specifically taught us how to treat it, so it's normal that I don't know."
James looked around at the other students and asked, "Anyone else know how to treat it?"
But as his gaze swept across the room, no one dared to stand up and answer. They all looked deep in thought, clearly stumped. Eventually, two girls mustered the courage to stand up and give it a shot, but they didn't get it right either.
James shook his head, a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "You guys are top students at this medical university, admitted with excellent scores, and you've read so many medical books, yet you can't treat such a simple condition?"
The previous student, still defiant, shot back, "Then why don't you tell us how to treat it?"
James put away his smile, picked up the chalk, and started writing on the blackboard, narrating as he wrote, "Firstly, hypertension is a common ailment among the elderly and is not inherently severe; its primary danger lies in precipitating other conditions, necessitating a gentle approach to medication. On the other hand, acute cholecystitis, caused by bile duct obstruction and bacterial invasion, demands stringent pharmacological intervention. Combining the treatment of both conditions requires even greater caution."
He continued to speak eloquently, writing the treatment methods on the blackboard, including which medications to use, the precise proportions, and the rationale behind the treatment.
His words seemed to have a magical effect, drawing everyone's attention and making them listen intently. "Everyone's constitution is different, so the medication will also vary. What I wrote on the blackboard are three methods. Medicine is not mathematics, nor is it English. If you make an error, you have another chance. But if you make a mistake in medicine, it often comes at the cost of a life. I hope you remember this. Since you chose the path of medicine, you must be rigorous and serious, not half-hearted." James put down the chalk and faced the students.
For a moment, the large lecture hall fell silent. Everyone stared at him, at a loss for words, especially the boy who was still standing. His face burned with embarrassment and shame.
Soon, led by Eryx, the whole room erupted in applause.
With James's performance, they were completely relieved. James not only had high medical skills but also excellent teaching abilities. He could gradually capture the students' attention, which was the hardest part.
After all, the worst thing in a lecture was when the teacher was passionately teaching, but the students were sleeping. That would make the lecture pointless.
James quickly engaged the students' emotions, which was the true test of a teacher's ability.
James continued the lecture, and the students' initial disdain for him gradually faded. Some students who loved traditional medicine also began to let go of their prejudices against James's youth and listened attentively.
However, just as James was about to continue, a man and a woman walked in from the door. The man was dressed in a neat white outfit, wearing glasses, looking very refined and handsome. But what really caught everyone's attention was the woman beside him.
Especially when James saw the woman, his pupils contracted sharply, and his body trembled violently.
