Chapter 115: James Takes Action
"Dr. Johnson, how can you joke at a time like this?"
"Exactly! Who in the entire hospital doesn't know James? If he can cure Mr. Edwards, I might as well fly to heaven."
The two assistants grumbled, making no effort to hide their disdain and contempt for James.
Before Jennifer could speak, Eugene angrily scolded, "Shut up! Dr. Johnson is a great doctor. If she says James can cure Mr. Edwards, there must be a reason."
The two assistants were bewildered by Eugene's reprimand. They thought Eugene should dislike James, so why was he speaking up for him?
Jennifer was also surprised.
Eugene continued, "Dr. Johnson, if James is confident he can cure Mr. Edwards, then let's get him here as soon as possible."
"You agree to let James come?" Jennifer frowned, filled with doubt.
Eugene sighed and said, "I agree. This time, I was too arrogant and didn't listen to Dr. Smith's advice, leading to the current situation. I feel very guilty. Since Dr. Smith is confident he can cure Mr. Edwards, he must have his reason. Let's get him here quickly and not delay the best treatment time."
Jennifer's intuition told her that Eugene's sudden change of attitude wasn't that simple, but her mind wasn't clear at the moment, and she couldn't figure it out.
Time was running out. Since she had Eugene's approval, she didn't delay any longer and quickly left the operating room to call James.
Herman, Dominic, and others who had been waiting outside the operating room were startled when they saw Jennifer come out and hurriedly surrounded her. "Dr. Johnson, why are you out here? Where's Dr. Baker? Is the surgery done? Was it successful? How is Mr. Edwards?"
Jennifer kept a stern face, suppressing her anxious expression. "The surgery isn't finished yet. Dr. Baker is still working on it. I came out to get something."
Herman couldn't help but ask, "Dr. Johnson, how is my father-in-law's condition? Is it still optimistic?"
Jennifer's lips moved, and after hesitating for a moment, she didn't answer directly but made an excuse and left. Then, she hurriedly went to make the call.
Finding James's number, she took a deep breath and dialed.
At that moment, she felt inexplicably nervous.
The call connected.
"James, you said before that you were confident you could cure Mr. Edwards. Is that true?" Jennifer asked.
James's voice came through the phone. "Yes."
Jennifer felt a bit of relief. "Then come to the hospital right away. Mr. Edwards's condition is not looking good."
James replied in a serious tone, "You started the surgery on him?"
"Yes," Jennifer briefly explained what had happened in the operating room. After finishing, she asked, "Given the situation, can you still treat him?"
She was very nervous. She wasn't a competent doctor. Despite being in the profession for so long, she still couldn't be as indifferent to life and death as other doctors. That was why, even though she was skilled in surgery, she ultimately chose dermatology.
She had chatted with Brandon a few times and knew he was a kind old man. She couldn't bear to see him die. As long as there was even a slight chance, she wanted to save Brandon, ignoring the consequences James might face if the surgery failed.
After listening to her, James was silent for two seconds before saying, "Which operating room are you in? I'll be there in a minute."
"Wait, you mean you're already in the hospital?" Jennifer was a bit surprised.
"Yes, I'm on the first floor," said James.
Jennifer felt a sudden warmth in her heart. She wasn't stupid; she naturally realized that James was staying in the hospital out of concern for her.
"I've left the operating room and am calling you from the office. Come to the office right away, and I'll take you to the operating room.
"Okay." James hung up the call. He moved quickly and arrived at Jennifer's office in less than a minute.
After changing into a white coat and putting on a mask that covered most of his face, leaving only his eyes visible, James was unrecognizable.
Seeing him dressed as a doctor, Jennifer was momentarily stunned.
She had been married to James for so long, but it was the first time she had seen him in a doctor's outfit. She hadn't expected him to look so handsome, especially with the clear and deep eyes.
Jennifer had a secret that James didn't know.
Her ideal partner had always been a highly skilled doctor, and James's current appearance perfectly matched that image in her mind.
"What's wrong? Will I be recognized dressed like this?" James asked quizzically. Jennifer's gaze had been strange, and he had never seen her look at him like that before.
Jennifer snapped back to reality at the sound of his voice, and her face slightly turned red. She quickly shook her head and, trying to appear calm, said, "Nothing. Let's hurry back to the operating room."
"Wait," James said. "Prepare a set of needles for me. I'll need them."
Jennifer didn't ask any questions and quickly prepared a set of needles for him before leading him back to the operating room.
Dominic, Herman, and the others were still waiting outside the operating room. They didn't recognize James and assumed he was some department head, so they didn't stop them.
Back in the operating room, Eugene and the two assistants immediately looked over. Seeing that James had really come, Eugene's eyes flashed with a hint of glee. He secretly despised James, thinking he was a fool for actually showing up.
As for the two assistants, they also thought James was an idiot for willingly becoming a scapegoat. They had already decided that after the surgery, they would blame Brandon's death entirely on James.
James didn't waste any time after entering. He quickly walked over to Brandon, seeing his pale face and the frighteningly slow heart rate on the monitor. Anger surged within him as he glared at Eugene and scolded, "What were you thinking? Is this your first surgery? Did you give Mr. Edwards a sedative? That's ridiculous! If he weren't in better shape than most elderly people, that sedative would have killed him!"
Eugene was instantly furious. As a Ph.D. from Simbara University with excellent medical skills, he had never been scolded like this, especially not by someone he considered a worthless nobody like James. His anger flared up immediately.
He instinctively wanted to retort, but he held back at the last moment, smirking inwardly. 'Let this fool have his moment. When Brandon dies, he will take all the blame!'
