Chapter 634 Arriving at the Canyon
On the road to Nile Canyon, Sidney was behind the wheel, speeding along with James riding shotgun. After a day of laying low, they ditched the stealth and headed straight for the meet-up spot.
"Mr. Smith, we can't drive into Nile Canyon, so we'll have to walk once we get there."
James wasn't caught off guard—he'd already read the intel on the Godslayer Organization's setup. After another ten minutes on the road, they veered onto a narrow path. An hour later, Sidney finally pulled over in some backwoods village.
Because there were outsiders, the entire village of over a hundred people gathered around. James got out of the car and asked in confusion, "What's going on?"
Sidney cautiously looked at the people and said, "Be careful, these mountain folks are extremely xenophobic. We need to leave the car here and then enter the mountain."
After saying that, Sidney began to negotiate with the villagers. At first, the villagers were quite aggressive, but when Sidney mentioned seeking the help of the gods in the mountains, their attitudes improved significantly.
Seeing the confusion on James's face, Sidney whispered, "Here, the members of the assassin organization are considered gods. They are notorious outside, but they treat the people in these mountains well."
James suddenly understood—basically, they were playing mind games, kind of like a cult. But he couldn't wrap his head around why someone as strong as King would stoop to that level.
Shaking it off, once Sidney wrapped up with the villagers, they stashed the car and headed for the meet-up spot. The trail was rough, barely more than a deer path, but neither of them were ordinary people, so they made quick work of it.
But after walking for half an hour, James suddenly stopped, frowning slightly, "Didn't think we'd have tails this quick. The Godslayer's got eyes everywhere."
Sidney's radar wasn't as sharp as James's, so he hadn't picked up on anything fishy. Hearing this, he frowned. "What's the play now?"
James cracked a smirk and called out, "Whoever's lurking back there, come on out!"
After James spoke, only the echo of his voice bounced around the mountains—no one showed. James's brow furrowed slightly. The presence he'd felt tailing them had vanished, and now he couldn't get a read on it.
"Let's roll. If they're not showing their hand, we can't tell if they're friend or foe."
With that, they pushed on. Once they were far enough, a shadowy figure materialized like a ghost where they'd stopped. Watching James and Sidney's retreating backs, the figure smirked, "Sharp as hell. But since you're here, don't even think about leaving!"
After speaking, the figure slowly faded away, disappearing like a phantom.
As they walked, James tossed out casual questions to kill time. "Sidney, how much intel does the NSA really have on King? I'm not buying it's just what's on paper."
Sidney hesitated, then chuckled awkwardly, "Mr. Smith, you're pulling my leg. As the chief instructor, you've got clearance to all the intel. So…"
"That's it? Damn, this King guy's a real ghost."
Sidney nodded. "Yeah, maybe Sword God's got the inside scoop."
James nodded, but Sword God hadn't said much before he left, only reminding him to retreat immediately if he couldn't win.
Pushing aside his distracting thoughts, James asked, "How much further?"
Sidney looked at the map, "Once we cross that mountain, we'll reach Nile Canyon. It's very well-hidden and easy to defend."
James nodded, impressed—the Godslayer Organization had definitely picked a solid spot. He'd been keeping an eye on his phone signal since they got here, and it had been dead for over half an hour. This place was practically isolated from the world.
Once they cleared the mountain, Nile Canyon came into view. It was on the far side of the ridge they'd just crossed. When James saw it, something felt off—it didn't look like it was carved by nature. More like it had been sliced open in one clean cut.
"Does this canyon feel off to you?" Sidney asked, picking up on James's unease.
James nodded, and Sidney cracked a knowing smile. "Yeah, it's weird. No birds ever fly over this place. Once they dip into Nile Canyon, they're toast—totally disoriented, can't find their way out."
James felt even more puzzled. To carve out a canyon this massive in one go—what kind of power would that take?
"Let's move. Stay sharp in there," James said, scanning the area. Seeing no tail, he took the lead into Nile Canyon.
"So, if Nile Canyon's such a big mystery, why didn't the Godslayer Organization set up shop here?"
Sidney replied coolly, "That's exactly why. All the intel on this place is top secret. But every year, researchers from all over the globe come poking around."
"Then why'd we pick this spot to camp? Aren't we worried they'll stumble on us?"
"Nah, they won't. Our setup's way deeper inside—where they can't go."
Once they stepped into the canyon, they moved carefully, though James's eyes kept darting to the cliffs on either side. The rock faces were slick with moss, but nothing else seemed to cling to them. The cliffs stretched on without a single gap, unbroken and imposing.
"Mr. Smith, what are you looking at?"
James smiled, "Why does this canyon look so… clean, like it was sliced open in one go?"
Sidney paused, then chuckled, "Researchers floated that idea once, but it got shot down—no way there's that kind of power. The official story was that a meteor did it."
James laughed, "What proof? If a meteor hit, where's the rock? I'm sticking with the one-slice theory."
As they kept moving, James suddenly caught a woman's desperate cry, "Is anyone out there? Help me, please!"
James and Sidney locked eyes. "What's someone doing stuck out here?"
