Chapter 33 Suggesting Divorce

Carlos curiously asked, "Why?"

"Guessing," James replied without revealing that he had actually heard it.

Rolling his eyes, Carlos seemed to ask, 'Are you kidding me?'

"I'll trust you next round for sure," Carlos said and confidently bet on 'big' without hesitation, not believing that James could really guess correctly.

However, a minute later, as the dealer opened the dice cup, Carlos was stunned. It was indeed 'small'! There were three dice in the cup, with two stacked together, totaling two and three, resulting in a 'small' outcome.

"This... Oh my god!" Carlos widened his eyes and pushed James and said, "It's really 'small'! James, how did you know? Can you really ear out the number on the dice?"

His voice was loud, attracting the attention of the surrounding people.

However, seeing him dressed plainly and lacking the demeanor of a skilled gambler, they didn't believe he had heard out the number on the dice.

"He must have guessed it. Ear out the number on the dice? Ridiculous," a proud young man scoffed.

The others whispered in complaint, "How did the Gambling God make a mistake this time? I lost tens of thousands because of it."

"Yeah, is the Gambling God losing his touch?" someone doubted.

"Nonsense, the Gambling God's skills are well known. It must be this fool's influence, talking about betting 'small.' What a jinx!" another blamed.

These people who lost money actually started blaming James.

Carlos also lamented, "Ah, my $50,000. If only I had listened to you."

Rodney frowned after his mistake, feeling very displeased. He glared at James and then said to the group, "If I hear any more complaints from you, don't follow me anymore."

They immediately backed off, apologizing to Rodney, explaining they hadn't meant to complain. Once they had sufficiently flattered him, Rodney's expression improved slightly.

Watching them fawn over Rodney, James shook his head and told Carlos, "Carlos, I see you've won quite a bit tonight. It's best to quit while you're ahead. This new dealer is skilled; even Rodney can't beat her."

Unconcerned, Carlos said, "You're mistaken. This dealer isn't that skilled. A few days ago, when we were playing dice with Rodney, it was this dealer shaking the dice cup, and Rodney completely outplayed her."

As James was about to say something, Carlos patted his shoulder and said, "Don't worry, bro, I know when to stop. I'll quit after winning another two hundred thousand."

James sighed. Continuing to gamble would risk Carlos losing the money he had won; he had seen that the dealer was a skilled player and had received instructions from the boss to target Rodney.

As expected, Rodney continued to lose. He was consistently outplayed by the dealer, winning only two rounds out of ten and losing the rest, losing two-thirds of the money he had won that night.

Those who had followed his bets also suffered heavy losses. One big gambler not only lost all his winnings but also had to pay back several thousand dollars.

They were getting more and more ticked off at Rodney until finally, the guy who had lost tens of thousands let off steam, and said, "Rodney, are you even any good? You've blown all my cash."

His words resonated with the others, who began expressing their dissatisfaction with Rodney.

Angrily, Rodney said, "Shut up! Did I force you to follow me? If you don't want to win money, then get lost!"

Despite their fear of Rodney, they quieted down after his scolding, no longer daring to complain.

He said, "This dealer is a bit tricky. I'll play something else." Rodney glanced warily at the dealer and left directly.

After losing nearly a million in ten rounds, he had had enough.

Carlos also lost most of his winnings, leaving him with only five thousand dollars.
James was about to advise Carlos to stop gambling, but his phone rang suddenly. It was Jennifer calling, and he hurried to a quiet spot to answer, not wanting Jennifer to know he was in such a place.

"Hello, dear. Is everything alright?" James asked cautiously.

Jennifer's slightly tired voice came through the phone, "I'll be back at the hospital the day after tomorrow. You come to pick me up then."

"Alright," answered James.

After that, the line was silent, with only their breathing audible. There was a distance between them, and neither knew what to say to the other.

Finally, James spoke up, "Dear, you're alone out there. Take care of yourself, and don't overwork."

After a few seconds of silence, Jennifer replied with a soft "Mhm" before hanging up.

Listening to the dial tone, James shook his head with a bitter smile. His wife was as aloof as ever.

"Dr. Johnson, is that James on the phone?" asked a chubby woman next to Jennifer, a doctor who was accompanying her.

Jennifer nodded.

The woman said, "Dr. Johnson, we've been colleagues for a long time, and there's something I've been holding back. I don't know if I should say it."

Jennifer, being astute, guessed what the woman wanted to say just by looking at her expression. "Are you suggesting that James and I should divorce?"

The woman hesitated for a moment, then nodded boldly. And replied, "Yes. I'm straightforward. Dr. Johnson, with your qualifications, you don't need to settle for someone like James."

Jennifer had heard these words before. In the past two years, almost twenty people had suggested the same thing to her. Nearly everyone who knew her believed that James wasn't worthy of her and that it would be better to divorce sooner rather than later.

"Actually, James is quite good to me," Jennifer said.

The woman scoffed disdainfully, "Is being good to you enough? Marriage isn't just about love; it's about building a family, and finances are crucial. A useless trash like James... Sorry, but that's how everyone refers to him. Dr. Johnson, you don't mind, do you?"

Jennifer remained silent, and the woman continued, "As far as I know, James, as a live-in son-in-law, has been married for five years without finding a stable job. His income is almost zero, and you have to support him for everything.

"Can a man like that truly make you happy? I've been through it myself; my ex-husband was a good-for-nothing, and I decisively divorced him.

"Now, I've found someone new. Look at how well I'm doing. I have a car and a house, and the kids are in school."

The woman added, "Dr. Johnson, a woman's most important asset is her marriage, and the most valuable years are those few. You've wasted five years on James. Do you want to continue wasting more?

"Moreover, your parents probably aren't satisfied with James either, right? Even in your relatives and neighbors, James must have caused you some embarrassment, hasn't he?"

Seeing Jennifer affected, the woman continued more fervently, "Listen to me. Men like James should be kicked out early. While you're still young, find someone new.

"With your qualifications, you can find someone a hundred times better than James. I think Mr. Phillips is quite good. He's rich, capable, handsome, and at a young age, he's already a director with a promising future."
