Chapter 158: I Have a Favor to Ask of Him
Edwin said, "A young man named James Smith."
Derrick, who was kneeling on the ground, jerked his head up upon hearing the name, clenching his teeth, his eyes filled with intense defiance and unwillingness.
Alan was stunned. Why did this name sound so familiar, as if he had heard it somewhere before?
Quickly, he remembered. Wasn't this the young man who sold him the premium Reishi mushroom yesterday?
His mouth gaped open, to the point where he questioned what he had just heard. He asked, "Mr. Wheeler, did I hear you correctly? Did you just say that person's name is James Smith?"
"Yes, James. Mr. Jordan, do you know James?" Edwin asked, somewhat puzzled.
After hearing Edwin confirm his claim, Alan still found it hard to believe.
He described James's appearance again and received Edwin's acknowledgment. Alan finally believed it. At the same time, he was both astonished and deeply regretful.
However, he was more puzzled. Edwin was a doctor with such a great reputation, but how could he hold a young man in such high regard? And that young man looked so ordinary.
"Mr. Wheeler, are you sure James can cure my daughter?" Alan asked, frowning.
Edwin nodded, his expression serious. "As long as he is willing to help, the problem shouldn't be too serious."
"But he's so young; he must lack experience!" Alan still found it hard to believe.
Edwin glanced back at Derrick and sighed deeply.
"You have to admit, there are geniuses in this world," he admitted.
Hearing Edwin's high praise for James, Alan was once again shocked. He knew Edwin's character well. Despite Edwin's seemingly kind demeanor, he was actually a very proud person, especially in the field of medicine. He had never heard Edwin admire anyone before.
And now, Edwin's words showed genuine admiration for James. How brilliant must James's medical skills be?
Derrick, still kneeling, trembled all over upon hearing this. He buried his head on the ground, clenched his fists tightly, gritted his teeth, and his eyes were bloodshot, filled with unwillingness.
Alan's mouth opened in shock. He regretfully said, "If only I had listened to James! Alas!"
Edwin asked, "What did James say to you?"
Alan sighed and said, "Actually, this premium Reishi mushroom was bought from James, and he even warned me that it wouldn't cure my daughter's illness. But yesterday, I didn't take his words seriously."
"What? Was James selling this premium Reishi mushroom to you? How could he bear to part with it? It was such a treasure for him." Edwin was very surprised.
Alan then recounted the events of yesterday to Edwin. After finishing, he said, "He's young and even doubted you. How could I believe him?"
Edwin laughed. "Mr. Jordan, you were wrong. In terms of medical skills, I might not even be able to match James. The situation is urgent now, so let's not delay any further. Let's find a way to contact James immediately."
"Yes, I get it." Alan nodded quickly, then took out his phone and called Jennifer.
On James's side, he and Jennifer had just checked out of the hotel and were preparing to return to Lindwood City.
Jennifer had called Alan several times today, but he had ignored her, and the messages she sent received no response. She felt very disappointed and knew that the possibility of collaborating with Alan was now very slim. After all, she thought that James had taken a big advantage over Alan. She realized that James actually sold the Reishi mushroom, which was bought back for one hundred thousand dollars, to Alan at a price of five million dollars. Anyone would be angry with such a situation, not to mention a proud business tycoon like Alan.
"Oh no!" Jennifer sighed. "It seems Alan is unwilling to cooperate with us. We should think of another way."
James comforted her. "Don't lose confidence. Maybe Alan will call you latter and propose a collaboration."
Jennifer rolled her eyes and said irritably, "Do you think that's possible? I've called him seven or eight times in the past two days. If he really wanted to collaborate, he would have agreed by now. It's all your fault for selling the Reishi mushroom to him at such a high price."
James said helplessly, "I just named a random price to dissuade him. Who knew he would be willing to pay five million dollars? Besides, with this five million dollars, we won't have trouble finding other suppliers. Even if the cost is a bit higher, we can afford it."
"It's not that simple." Jennifer shook her head. "In all of Emerald Isle City, Alan's herbs are of the best quality. Other suppliers' products are more or less mixed with inferior goods. If we end up using substandard herbs to treat patients, I wouldn't feel at ease."
James smiled and said, "Don't worry. After a while, Alan will most likely call us."
"You're just boasting!" Jennifer glared at James, feeling that he was getting more and more outrageous.
'How could he say such things? Does he really think he is a prophet?' she thought.
However, just as she finished speaking, her phone rang. She took it out and was stunned.
The caller ID displayed Alan's name.
She looked up at James in surprise. "How did you know Alan would call me?"
James deliberately put on a mysterious expression and said, "See, I didn't lie to you."
Jennifer came to her senses and pouted. "Don't be so smug. You are just guessing."
She then quickly answered the call. "Hello, Mr. Jordan."
Alan's anxious voice immediately came through the phone. "Dr. Johnson, hello. I've been busy these past two days and couldn't return your calls in time. Please don't take offense."
Jennifer was stunned and was wondering if she heard that correctly. The Alan who had been so indifferent to her just a few days ago was now speaking to her so respectfully.
The change in Alan's manner made her a puzzle.
"No, no, Mr. Jordan, I didn't take offense. Are you free now? How about we find a place to sit down and discuss the collaboration?" Jennifer tentatively suggested.
Alan replied, "Of course! The collaboration is a minor issue. I'd love to do collaborate with you."
Jennifer was overjoyed upon hearing this and was about to speak when she heard Alan's voice that was tinged with some nervousness and excitement. "Dr. Johnson, is Mr. Smith by your side? May I speak with him for a moment?"
Jennifer was once again surprised and instinctively looked at the calm James beside her. She said, "Of course."
Alan's voice was noticeably delighted. "That's great! Dr. Johnson, could you please hand the phone to him? I have a favor to ask of him."
